I Have A Plan Iowa®
IowacodespecifiesthatallIowastudentsmustcreatestudentcurriculumplans.Studentsbeginworkontheirplansduring8thgradeandcontinuetobuilduponthemthroughouthighschoolbycompletingidentifiedstatecomponentsspecifictoeachgradelevel.AsIowa’sdesignatedcareerinformationanddecision-makingsystem,IHaveAPlanIowa® incorporates the state componentsintograde-specificguidewaystohelpschoolsmeettherequirementsofthestudentcurriculumplan.The guideways:• Provideaneasystep-by-stepprocessforstudentstocompletetherequiredcomponents.• AllowtheIowaDepartmentofEducationtoreceivetherequireddatareportsautomatically.

Thefirststepistocreateaprofessionalaccount.Youwillneedanaccounttoviewthestepsoftheguidewayandtomonitorstudents’progress.Tocreateanaccount,gotohttp://procenter.ihaveaplaniowa.govandclickonCreateaProfessionalCenterAccount.YouwillneedaProfessionalAccountAccessKeyorAdministratorCode.Ifyoudonothavethecodeforyourschool,pleasecallXapCorporationtechsupportat800-281-1168.

Using the 9th Grade Guideway
Toaccesstheguideways,signintoanaccountand select the Iowa Guidewayslinkfromthelandingpage.
PLEASE NOTE: Your students MUST completetherequiredcomponentsintheGuidewayin orderfortheirworktoberecordedfortheIowaDepartmentofEducationreport.
Iowa 9th Grade Guideway
Thisguidewaywillwalkstudentsthroughpartsofthesystemthatarerecommendedfor9thgradestudents.Guidewaysareself-directedandprovideguidanceforstudentsbysuggestingthenextstepsfortheircareerprocess.Thecomponentsofthegrade-specificguidewaysinIHAPIwereidentifiedbytheIowaDepartmentofEducation.
Thereisalotherebutitdoesn’tneedtobedoneallatonce.Studentscanstopbetweenstepsandpickuplaterwheretheyleftoff.HINT:Onthewaythrougheachstep,followtheinstructionsintheguidewaypanelatthetopofthepage.
The 9th Grade Guideway helps students: • Discoverinterestsandexplorerelatedcareers.• Searchforcareers.• Identifytheirlevelofeachbasicskill.• Reviewandupdatetheirplanofstudy.• Gettheirparent/guardiantoapprovetheirworkandreflectonwhatthey’veaccomplished.

Step 1 – Interest Profiler
Allowstudentsatleast10–20minutestocompletethe60-questionassessment.Tobegin,clicktheGet Started button.
Hint:TheInterestProfilerasksstudentsquestionsaboutwhattheyenjoy.Besurestudents understand that when completingtheassessmenttheyshouldfocus on what they like to do or think they wouldliketodointhefuture,assumingtheywilldeveloptheskillsneeded.
Hint:Toprogressinanyguideway,onceastepiscompleted,clicktheContinue link atthetopofthepage.
OncestudentscompletetheInterestProfiler,theywillbeabletoviewtheirInterestAreas.InterestAreasarebasedontheresearchofJohnHolland,whotheorizedthatmostindividualsareacombinationofthefollowingqualities:

RESULTS: Students can see how their InterestAreasareranked,viewcareersmatchingtheirtopInterestAreasorreflectontheirresults.

Usingtheclass’sInterestProfilerresultsasawhole,havestudentscalculatethepercentofstudentswithineachofHolland’sCodes.

Step 2 – Career Finder
The Career Finder allows students to searchforcareersmatchingaspecificcharacteristicorseveralcharacteristics.
Characteristicscanbefoundontheleftsideofthescreen.
NOTE: Students will need to save three careers to their portfolio before being allowed to continue in the guideway.
InthisCareerFindersearch,educationlevelisusedasacharacteristic.
Hint:Ifstudentsselectedthebachelor’sdegreebox,CareerFinderwouldgeneratealistofcareersrequiringabachelor’sdegreeandallothercareersrequiringlesseducation.Ifstudentswishtoviewonlythosecareersrequiringabachelor’sdegree,theycanunchecktheotherboxes.
Othercharacteristicscanbeaddedtothesearchusingthemenuonthelefthand-sideofthepage.Studentscanviewtheirmatchingcareersbasedonlyoneducationlevelbyselectingthelinkatthebottomofthepage.

Tolearnmoreaboutacareer,studentsneedtoclickonacareername.
NOTE: To progress in the guideway, students must save three careers to their portfolio.
To save a career to a portfolio,studentswillneed to select the Add to Portfolio linkontheleftofthepage.
Oncethefirstandsecondcareershavebeensaved,select the Review Other Careers link at the top of the page to review the careerlistagain.
Onceatleastthree careershavebeensaved,select the Continue link at thetopofthepage.
Optional Educational Enhancement Activity
Have each student generate a list of ten careers fromtheirCareerFinderresults.Thestudentsshouldthensearchforanoccupationthat doesn’trequiretheuseofmath.

Step 3 – Basic Skills Survey
The Basic Skills Survey asks students to assess their current skills in ten areas:

Eachofthetenskillareashasseven levels.Whenastudentisabletoreportthathe/shecanperformtwooftheskillsinagivenlevel,he/shecanmovetothenextlevel.
Whenastudentcannolongerreportbeingabletocompletetwoskillsinanarea,he/sheshouldscrolltothebottomofthepage and select the Continuetothenextskilllink.

RESULTS:Oncetheassessmenthasbeencompleted,studentscan review their current skills andexplorecareersmatchingtheircurrentskills.
Hint:Remindstudentstoanswerthequestionshonestly,reportingtheircurrentskills.Letthemknowthereistimetodevelop the skills they will need for a future career and that reportingaccurately,helpsthemtoseeareasfordevelopment.

Optional EducationalEnhancement Activity
AfterstudentscompletetheBasicSkillsSurvey,askthemtoselectonecareerfromthelist.Students should write a descriptionoftheoccupationthatincludesseveraltasks.Studentsshouldthenidentifywhich three skills are considered mostimportantforthatcareerandatwhichlevel.

Step 4 – Your Plan of Study
Studentscanbuildtheirplanofstudyaroundacareercluster,aplancustomizedbytheireducatororcreateaplanfromscratch.Tobegin,clickContinue.
Tobegin,havestudentsselecttheCreate your course planlink.

If students would like to create aplanofstudyfromacluster,theycanbuildaplanaroundasuggestedclusterfromthecareerclustersurveyresults.Noticethatifstudentshavecompletedthecareerclustersurvey,recommendationsaremade.Ifstudentsarenolonger considering pursuing a careerinthatarea,theycanchooseanentirelydifferentcluster.
Tocreateaplanofstudyfromaplancustomizedbyaneducator or fromscratch,select the Create a plan of study from scratchlinkatthebottomofthepage.

Ifstudentschoosetobuilda plan of study around a cluster,theywillcometothis page and use a career clustertobuildaplanorselectapathway.Pathwaysgivestudentsmorespecificdirectiononthecoursesrecommendedforacareerpath.
Ifstudentschoosetobuildaplanofstudyaroundaplancustomizedbyaneducator,theywillcometothispage and select Choose this set toviewthecustomizedplan.

Lastly,ifstudentschoosetostartacourseplanfromscratch,theywillcometothis page and select the Create a plan of study from scratchlink.
Regardlessofhowstudentscreatetheirplanofstudy,theywillcometoapagewithagrid.Toeditthegridtoreflectcoursestheyplantotake,studentswillclickinacell.Forexample,tochoosetheir9thgradeEnglishclass,studentswouldclickanywhereinthe9thgradeEnglishcell.

Onthispage,studentswillselecttheircoursesfromthedrop-downmenu.Ifaplanhasbeencustomizedbyaneducatorattheirschoolthecoursename(s)availablefortheirgradeinthatsubjectareawillappear.Oncethecoursenameisselected,havestudentschoosethecreditsofferedforthatcourse.Ifstudentsarecurrentlyenrolledinthecourse,thestatuscanbechangedfromplannedtoenrolled.Lastly,studentsshouldselecttheAdd Courselinkontherightsideofthepage.
Whenthecoursehasbeenentered,thescreenwillrefresh.Havestudentsselectthe Savebutton.
Oncebackonthegrid,students will see the course theyselected.Workisautomaticallysavedasthestudentsentercourses.
Onceallcourseshavebeenentered,directstudentstoselecttheContinuelinkatthetopofthepage.

Step 5 – Parent Review
Inthisnextstep,thestudent’sparentorguardianmaybeinvitedtoreviewthestudent’swork.
Hint: This step is not required.Forstudentswho would prefer not tocompletethisstep,clickContinuetogotothenextstepoftheguideway.
Studentsmayinviteaparent/guardiantocreatetheirownaccountatIHaveAPlanIowa®andcreatealinktoviewtheirstudent’sportfolio.Inthisstepstudentssendaninvitationtoaparent/guardiantoaccesstheirportfolio.ThestudentclicksInviteaparentorguardian.
Iftheparent/guardianconnectionwasalreadyestablisheditwillbedisplayedonthispage.Studentsjustneedtoremindparentsandguardianstoreviewtheportfolioandsavea9thgradereviewcommentinthestudentportfolio(iftheychoosetodoso).

Toinviteaparent/guardiantoviewtheirportfolio,studentsshouldentertheparent/guardian’snameande-mailaddress.Theinvitatione-mailcanbesentinEnglishorSpanish.ThestudentclicksInvite to send the e-mail.
Thepageisrefreshedtoshowthataninvitationhasbeensent.Oncetheparent/guardianhasacceptedtheinvitationandmadetheconnectiontothestudent’sportfoliofromtheirparentaccount,thestatuswillbechangedto“Accessestablished.”Thestudentmaychoosetorevoketheparentaccessatanytime.
Note: Iowa Code requires only that the parents of 8th grade students approve their students’ plan. Approval is not required for the 9th Grade Guideway. Students can skip this step by clicking Continue.

Step 6 – Annual Reflection
Inthelaststepofthe9thGradeGuideway,studentshaveachancetoreflectonwhattheylearnedaboutthemselvesthisyear.ThisreflectioncanbedoneannuallyfromtheYourProfilesectionoftheportfolio.Students click Add an annual reflectiontostart.
Students choose 9th Gradefromthemenuthenentertheirreflectioninresponse to the two questions.Thetextbesidethefieldscanhelpthemwith ideas on what to describe.Whenstudentsclick Save and the page is refreshed showing their reflections,thestepiscomplete.
WhenfinishedthestudentshouldclickContinue.Asummarypagewillappeartolet the student know the recommendedstepsarecompleted.Studentsmustcontinuetothesummarypagebeforeitwillshowthattheyhavecompletedthisguideway.
Allofthestudent’sworkissaved so they can revisit any of the steps of the guideway atanytime.
