9th VDV Academy Conference Electric Buses - Market of the Future! ElekBu 2018Electric mobility can contribute to the zero-emission mobility defined as a worldwide target in the UN Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Thanks to the present technical and practical experience with the operation of electric buses electric mobility is being further developed in numerous projects. So where are we today? Which further steps are recommended? When can series manufacture begin? Answers on these questions and on many other questions are given by public transport companies and discussed with manufacturers and industry suppliers.

The requirements for mobility service providers grow in ma-ny respects and do not only include the usual requirements for improvement of the service quality, but also higher and higher requirements for environmentally friendly public transport. Thus, it is not only required that the present gene-ral emission limits are met, but also that local zero-emission operation is performed.
As the permissible limit values for the emission of nitrogen oxide have been exceeded for many years in German cities and metropoles, the EU Commission has taken Germany to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). High fines might have to be paid.
Due to the insufficient measures for reduction of the far too high emission of pollutants German administrative courts have rendered judgments against several cities. Driving bans might have to be realised for diesel vehicles in the districts and on the roads with the most severe pollution. Consequent-ly, public transport companies find themselves confronted with the expectation of political bodies that their bus fleets are renewed with vehicles with extremely low-pollutant dri-ves (Euro VI) or even zero-emission drives. A first immediate action programme with financial support for municipalities has been promised.
At present, buses with zero-emission drives are being opera-ted on a test basis in several cities. Some cities already ope-rate a few lines exclusively with these buses. Tenders for the procurement of quite a few electric buses are being prepared or running already.
This situation makes it highly relevant to provide a compe-tent discussion platform for suppliers, public transport com-panies, energy providers, consulting firms, town planners and scientists. Many different aspects have to be considered for these novel drive technologies. Initial experience of Ger-man and foreign companies can be exchanged and innova-tions can be presented.
Parallel to the conference the ElekBu Fair takes place, as usu-al. The exhibition space at the new venue is much bigger and even allows presentation of articulated buses. Just as du-ring the earlier VDV Academy Conferences both the exhibi-tors and the participants of the conference are going to bene-fit from the close connection between the conference and the trade fair.
