QAC Spirit—Page 1 Why Look for the Living Among the Dead?Cathy Dempsey I was struck by the Gospel verse from the Easter Vigil last Saturday evening, where the angel appears to the women at the empty tomb, and says to them: Why do you look for the living among the dead?We at QAC are Easter people, and we are alive! Since we believe Jesus is risen, and we are in him, we are to be found with him—among the living. I know that many of us have fears and concerns because the Marianists are facing declining numbers of priests, and they have told us that in two years they will be making a decision about whether they can connue to support the six Marianist parishes around the country. Yet we are alive now, and called to be transformed into a deeper new life as the Queen of Apostles Community. I am actually excited about the ways we are moving forward to transform the way we are community that allows us to grow more deeply into the new life Jesus is calling us to, such as: 1) We are working on ways we should change our pracce of liturgy to be more inving to new members, especially younger adults, while sll retaining the uniqueness of our QAC liturgies; 2) We are working on ways to bring stronger, deeper formaon in the Marianist charism, and ways for QAC to be more deeply rooted in and a part of the Marianist Family in the Dayton area; and 3) We are working on our decision-making processes to be more collaborave and consensus-oriented, and more in tune with the Marianist decision-making processes. “Why Look for the Living Among the Dead?” Cathy Dempsey

I was struck by the Gospel verse from the Easter Vigil last Saturday evening, where the angel appears to the women at the empty tomb, and says to them: “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” We at QAC are Easter people, and we are alive! Since we believe Jesus is risen, and we are in him, we are to be found with him—among the living.

I know that many of us have fears and concerns because the Marianists are facing declining numbers of priests, and they have told us that in two years they will be making a decision about whether they can continue to support the six Marianist parishes around the country. Yet we are alive now, and called to be transformed into a deeper new life as the Queen of Apostles Community. I am actually excited about the ways we are moving forward to transform the way we are community that allows us to grow more deeply into the new life Jesus is calling us to, such as: 1) We are working on ways we should change our practice of liturgy to be more inviting to new members, especially younger adults, while still retaining the uniqueness of our QAC liturgies; 2) We are working on ways to bring

stronger, deeper formation in the Marianist charism, and ways for QAC to be more deeply rooted in and a part of the Marianist Family in the Dayton area; and 3) We are working on our decision-making processes to be more collaborative and consensus-oriented, and more in tune with the Marianist decision-making processes. Each of the three ad hoc committees addressing these areas will be striving to keep the community updated on their work through bulletin announcements, emails, articles in the Spirit, and information posted on the QAC website. In the meantime, if at any time you want to participate or have questions about any of the ad hoc committees, you can call the assigned steering committee “point person” for each ad hoc committee:

Marianist Environmental Education Center

(MEEC) by Bill Meers

“Restoring Communities of Land and People”

“Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our

faith.” (Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions 1998)

The Marianist Environmental Education Center (MEEC) is a Marianist community institution and Mt. St. John neighbor which works to keep us connected to the natural world. MEEC programs integrate spirituality, ecology and sustainability and inspire us to live in harmony with the Earth and its inhabitants. Important to MEEC’s mission are the Pope’s Encyclical “Laudato Si” and the Catholic Climate Covenant. MEEC is one of the institutions that the Queen of Apostles Community supports through our charitable donations. The QAC Social Justice Ministry offers opportunities throughout the year for QAC members to participate in MEEC activities.

Mt. St. John Nature Preserve

MEEC manages and cares for 100 acres, including the Mt. St. John Preserve, which it seeks to restore to its natural ecosystem free of invasive plants and degradation by encroachment from development and other threats. The Preserve’s two miles of walking trails offer a rich, diverse environment, including a restored prairie and many different native plants, birds, and insects.

2019 MEEC Native Plant Sale - Saturday, June 22nd; 8 AM to 1 PM

This annual sale is MEEC’s primary fundraiser and supports the restoration of the Mount St. John Marianist Nature Preserve, as well as educational programs. A wide variety of wild flowers, shrubs, and trees will be available for sale.

Gardening with Native Plants Workshop - Saturday, June 15th

MEEC is offering this workshop one week before the plant sale. You’ll learn the best plants for your space and will be able to purchase plants at the workshop. Register at the MECC website.

Stay Connected as a MEEC Volunteer

MEEC offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities throughout the year from tending plant and tree nurseries and assisting with the native plant sale to participating in butterfly surveys and bird counts.

Get Outside: Walk the Nature Trail in Our Backyard!

Get your binoculars and bird book. You’ll find a trail map and guide to the Mt. St. John Nature Preserve at this link: https://meec.center/files/attachments/section/Nature_Trail_Guide.pdf

Stay Informed at MEEC’s Website (https://meec.center/)

Visit MEEC’s secure website to stay inspired and find support for your commitment to the Earth! The website has information on MEEC workshops and events throughout the year, such as winter and summer solstice celebrations, and opportunities to volunteer and donate.

Making Decisions

You may make your plans, but God directs your actions. (Proverbs 16:9)

The Decision Making Process Ad Hoc committee met for the first time on Monday, April 22nd at 7:00 PM in Si Lounge and will continue to meet every 2 weeks at the same time and place. Our next meeting will be on May 6th, if you are interested in attending.

Our first priority is to build and sustain our community. Every proposed decision will be evaluated on how it benefits the Community. The proposed decision making process will be based on the Marianist process of building trust and consensus by engaging the entire community in active collaboration and dialogue. We will be looking to the Steering Committee to help establish levels of decision making. There are different types of decisions we need to make. Those that require limited or no consultation will be clearly defined and decided with a sense of accountability, faithfulness to our mission, respect for all, and in a spirit of trust. Because communication and transparency is critical, all meetings will be documented and the notes shared with QAC members and the Marianists Province via Fr. Tim Kenney.

Seniors’ Corner - Chuck Bauer

The Lenten Friday Fish Fry was a great success! Approximately 35 hungry people attended and enjoyed the delicious food! Thanks for your food and donations. The donations are

primarily used to defray the cost of guests at the Christmas and Mother's Day brunches. Thanks to Dennis and Bob for providing the crappie (fish), the breading and serving chores. This was the first time I had a meal of all crappie. It was a great, very mild fish, which may have been because you skinned them. Thanks also to Tom Q. who similarly pitched in to help. I have a saying that 90% of the work takes 10% of the time and 10% of the work takes 90% of the time — that is cleanup, so thanks to Peggy and Gary for pitching in. May is when I go out and get all the information for my "Free and Nearly Free" postings. The Free and Nearly Free activities are already starting in early May, and are noted below. I usually get all the information together for the third Sunday of May.

Mother’s Day Brunch at the Beavercreek Golf Club Sunday, May 14th

I have again made reservations for the 12:00 Noon seating, and will be taking sign ups after Mass on April 28th and May 7th. The Brunch is

open to everyone. Treat your Mother or the Mother of your children to this fabulous brunch!

Easter Season New Life — Martie Holda

Donations for Baby Pantry— Pull a card and WIN delight as you shop for babies. Look for the

aqua crates in the vestibule — one is near the Easter Cross in the foyer and the other is on the wooden table for easy access. Please pull a card with ideas of what to bring, or make your own choice. As the photo shows, we are extremely low on baby cereal and food. We have no pacifiers, baby spoons or sippy cups, and no baby towels or washcloths. We give each client only a dozen wipes in a sandwich baggie, but baby wipes are much needed. Baby Formula is essential. See cards at our display. Name brands preferred and please be sure to check expiration dates. Newborn sizes for clothing are in very low supply, especially one piece pajamas.

We are looking for volunteers to sort and match donated clothing, and those who sew or knit to help make baby and toddler blankets. Materials can be provided if needed.

You are welcome to call Martie Holda at 286-0218 if you have questions. We are glad to shop for you and return receipts. Please refer to the April Spirit article for much information about Dayton Right to Life operations and other ways to donate. As always, we are grateful for your generosity!!

Have you spring cleaned your bookshelf?

Consider cleaning your shelves and donating any unwanted or unused books to our book drive being held for Catholics in Malawi who are in need of books. Religious books have been requested as well as novels and English books. If you

are in doubt if they could use it, please donate it! With the amount requested, we can’t collect too many.

Collection boxes will be in Si Lounge and the vestibule through the month of May.

Contact: Erica Rudemiller, [email protected] with questions

Boxes are also needed so we can package the books for delivery. (Nothing too big as we have to be able to still lift the box!)

Mary Crowning

May is known to be the month of Mary. Mary is our Mother and in celebrating Mother’s Day during May it is only fitting that we honor our heavenly mother as well. The origin of the crowning of Mary can be difficult to pinpoint. However, there has been a longstanding tradition of honoring Mary as Queen. We reflect on Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth when praying the fifth Glorious mystery.

In a special way, members of the Queen of Apostles Community hold Mary as Queen close to our heart, as our namesake. “Mary is Queen of Apostles because she was chosen to be the Mother of Jesus Christ and to give Him to the world; she was made the Apostles’ Mother and our own by our Savior on the cross; she was with the Apostles while awaiting the descent of the Holy Spirit, obtaining from them the abundance of supernatural graces they received on Pentecost.” (Devotion to Mary, Queen of Apostles , Daughters of Saint Paul.)

Our Community, as a Marianist Community, holds Mary in a special place. One of the Marianist charisms is to “look to Mary as our model.” Mary was the perfect disciple and gives us an example of what it means to listen to the Holy Spirit and to follow Jesus without counting the cost.

Take some time during this month of May to reflect on Mary. To consider what Mary means to you. How does Mary challenge you to live out your discipleship? How is Mary your model?

Please join our Middle School class on Mother’s Day, May 12th as we crown Mary. We will meet in Si Lounge at 9:30 and process to over to crown Mary. All are invited as we pray together and give thanks for Jesus’ Mother and our Mother.

Stewardship – Commitment to QAC

Kevin Skinner

This is based on our collections to the

commitment we made when approving our

Budget in June 2018.

A Little History of the Marianist in the United States

The Marianists first came to the United States in 1849, landing in Cincinnati, Ohio. They moved north to Dayton, where they established St. Mary’s School for Boys in 1850. St. Mary’s would become the University of Dayton.

The Society of Mary grew and spread, continuing its primary focus of bringing others to Christ through education.

It established or staffed secondary schools in numerous states, and founded St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, in 1852, and established Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawai’i, in 1955.

To administer the sprawling geography, there eventually were four U.S. Marianist provinces: Cincinnati (from the initial mission post), St. Louis (established 1908), Pacific (established 1948) and New York (established 1961).

The number of Marianists has decreased in recent decades, and the four U.S. provinces were consolidated in 2002 to create the Marianist Province of the United States.

There are approximately 270 Marianist brothers and priests in the Province of the United States today. The Province sponsors or co-sponsors a variety of ministries, including 19 secondary schools, three universities, four retreat centers and six parishes. The Province includes additional professed Marianists in India and Mexico.

Information obtained from https://www.marianist.com/

Marianist brothers in Cincinnati in 1876. This is among the oldest photos of U.S. Marianists

"I don’t think we should have to promise to give money to God. We should give what our heart tells us at the time. I like to be able to just put in the collection whatever I have that week."

The pastor listened carefully and after his haircut he handed the barber $1 for the $10 haircut, saying, "I like to give what my heart tells me — just whatever I have in my pocket at the time."

"Father," the barber protested, "I can’t pay my rent, take care of my expenses and run my business successfully if everyone would do that."

"Neither can God," the pastor replied.

As we prepare our budget for next year, it reminds me of the story of a wise pastor who went to get a haircut. The barber, who also happened to be a parishioner, took the opportunity to tell the pastor all the reasons why the barber was not going to complete his stewardship pledge card.

Please remember that when we pass our budget in June, we are making a stewardship pledge, and that includes our Social Justice Ministry.
