Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus!
Dear Editor, I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in ‘The Sun,’, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?
-Virginia O’ Hanlon
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.
Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus? It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. No-body can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. No Santa Claus! Thank God he lives, and he lives for-ever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Christmas Trees
Oddly, the iconic evergreen trees lighting and warming our family spaces and public squares have been the target for what’s become an annual contro-versy. Some say it should be called a “Holiday Tree” because of church/state separation, while others don’t want to change tradition. I don’t take any par-ticular “side” on the issue, since tradition doesn’t really have to make any sense. It’s just a fun thing to do.
My wife and I have an artificial tree that never dies, anyway. The Balsam smell isn’t quite there, but at least it helps illuminate my living room.
Lately, I’ve been curious about the origin of the tradition. Sometimes, it helps to understand the beginnings of things. An adage I’ve come to adopt: “To understand the past is to under-stand the future.”
There are some great sources on the web that outline both the history of the tree and it’s opposition. Apparently, the Christmas tree (or the cutting of ever-green boughs) was forbidden by many christian groups as early as the third century. In the Old Testament, Jeremiah 10:2-4 specifically forbids the pagan practice of cutting down evergreen trees from the forest and decorating them
inside the home.Despite this literal interpretation,
the practice was eventually adopted into both secular and religious tradi-tion. But, it took awhile; Pastor Henry Schwan of Cleveland Ohio was the first credited with decorating his church with a tree in 1851, and still took some opposition for his decision.
The history is interesting, but don’t let it keep you from doing something fun that we all love. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!
Mike Adamczyk
Take this, Charlie Brown: At 295 feet tall and 114 feet wide, Mexico City holds the record for the world’s largest artificial Christmas Tree.

Vp Whitney ReportDirector Howes thanked everyone
for their patience in the recent Whitney Building brown-out. A ComEd crew caused a loss of electricity to the lights over the garage door and area light poles. Heatherridge maintenance crews re-dug the area and reconnected the electricity.
A big thanks to the maintenance crew for their good work.
One side of the garage door sensor had been twisted, inhibiting the door from closing. This has been corrected; however, residents are reminded to not touch these sensors for the safety of all.
A reminder was given to break down boxes before placing them in the recy-cling containers, only put recyclables in these containers, and, if one container is full to the top of the sides, start using the second container.
President Gaither moved and Director Meyers seconded a motion to accept the VP Whitney Report.
Ayes: Gaither, Howes, and Meyers.Absent Thacker
Old Business
Lintpros BillingPresident Gaither reported everyone
should have received a letter regarding the airflow on their dryer vents. Because some unit owners complained, it was decided that unit owners should be charged $200 if they had full airflow (8 mph or better) and those with no airflow be charged $50 to cover LintPros’ testing of their airflow. However, Tim encour-aged everyone with a blockage to have it checked out. This is the responsibility of the unit owner as it covers a limited common area with usage by the owners. With full disclosure in the selling of real estate now, if the problem is not fixed, it will have to be before a unit is sold or the buyer could come back and request it be fixed.
A discussion by some unit owners ensued with President Gaither stating that the then Board hired LintPros in good faith to do the work after success-fully doing one unit but encountered problems in other units finding that all unit dryer vents in the buildings were not the same causing them to change their

pricing. A letter will go out to owners with no airflow so that they are aware of the problem.Miscellaneous
Both roofs have been inspected and are in good shape. There is a life expec-tancy of another seven to ten years before needing replacement. The locust tree on Whitney, which had been clogging the roof drains, has been trimmed.
The Overhead Door Company has fixed the intermittent opening problem with the 650 garage door.
Director Howes moved and Director Meyers seconded a motion to accept the Old Business Report.
Ayes: Gaither, Howes, and Meyers.Absent Thacker

Carpet Cleaning/ReplacementThe carpets on all four floors of both
buildings and the 650 lobby carpet will be cleaned at a cost of $695 for each building. The carpet in the 690 lobby will be replaced.690 Building Plumbing Repair
On Wednesday, October 31, 2012, a plumbing valve in the 690 Chandler
Building will be replaced. This is expected to take the entire day. It is necessary to close down the water supply to the entire building, and entry into each unit by the plumbers will be necessary to ensure all water is bled out of the plumb-ing system. After the valve is replaced, the plumbers will need to re-enter each unit to pressurize the water heater and ensure there are no leaks in fixtures. THIS IS THE ONLY BUILDING AFFECTED. It was suggested that unit owners fill their bathtubs the night before, as well as some containers with water which may be needed during the day. The rec centers may also be used with your card.
Director Howes moved and Director Meyers seconded a motion to accept the New Business Report.
Ayes: Gaither, Howes, and Meyers.Absent Thacker
Homeowners ForumA unit owner asked about carpet
tearing at a seam, and was informed there is an acrylic-type substance/glue which dries clear and can be used to repair the tear.
A requested was made that, the next time The Overhead Garage Company
comes out, a rope be installed on the Whitney garage door to allow one person to close the door when electricity is off.
Partially-eaten apples were found in a bag in the lobby of the 650 Whitney lobby. We all need to be good citizens and dispose of trash in the proper recep-tacles and, if we find it somewhere other than a trash receptacle, please dispose of it properly.Announcements
The next meeting of the HRCA#1 Board of Directors is tentatively set for Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at 7:00 PM in the lobby of the 650 Whitney building. Adjournment
Upon motion made and seconded, President Gaither adjourned the meeting at 8:15 PM.

...Yawn.Village bores everyone with new paint job
After many months of work, our local water tower (once known for it’s striking, thought-provoking clouds broadcasting the name of our lovely community) is nearly finished being repainted.
Since the water tower is owned by
the Village of Gurnee, the paint job was chosen to be “uniform” with other tow-ers in our fair city. HeatherRidge didn’t have any choice in the matter.
Oh well! We still tip our hat to the workers who worked many hours and, of course, the city government who had to pony up a great deal of cash to com-plete the necessary work.

Snow Removal Driveway DamageA number of Cambridge homeown-
ers who had new driveways put in this year attended the last Umbrella Board meeting to request that Maintenance use proper snow removal equipment when
doing our driveways to eliminate the damage that is done to the driveways every winter. This includes physical dam-age to the driveways, mostly on the edges of the driveway, as well as the scraping of the topcoat.
The Umbrella Board decided that they can’t afford to buy the equipment needed just for Cambridge homes and they told us that Cambridge Homeowners should report any damage done to the driveways as a result of snow plowing and that Maintenance will have it corrected. This applies mostly to physical damage, namely, pieces of the driveway removed by the equipment, not so much to the scraping of the topcoat. The Umbrella Board also suggested that Cambridge homeowners could opt out of having their driveways plowed but no credit would be given them on their monthly assessments. Obviously this is not a viable option.
The Cambridge Board therefore advises homeowners to take pictures of their driveways now so we can show them to Maintenance next year to point out any damage that we believe was caused by the snow removal. 5734 Regency Court Foreclosure
A letter prepared by Norm LaBelle addressed to the Citibank manager in charge of foreclosed properties in this area was passed to the Board members for their review. In this letter Norm points out all the architectural violations that this property has incurred since the previous owner abandoned the property and he asks Citicorp that they do their part as the “new owner” of the property and correct the violations, concentrating at first in the fascia, soffit and deck viola-tions. The Board members were asked to
review this letter and email Norm with their approval or suggested changes. Once he hears from all Board members, Norm will have Barb Snarski send the letter to Citicorp.

2013 Budget While the Umbrella contribution
for 2013 decreased $0.81 a month, the Central Rec Center (Clubhouse) contribution increased $2.30 a month for 2013. After discussing possible scenarios to meet our Umbrella and Cambridge obligations for 2013, the Board decided to increase the 2013 monthly assessment $1 per month making the new assess-ment $197 per month. This allows the Board to keep the assessment as low as possible in spite of Umbrella increases while maintaining Cambridge’s fiscal solvency.Homeowner’s Comments
Anne Klytta wanted to express her thanks and appreciation to the Maintenance Dept. for the expedient manner in which they replaced her mailbox and her attached neighbor’s recently when they were taken down and destroyed by a hit-and-run driver.Adjournment

The board will meet to discuss 2013 inspections, to include timing, volunteers, follow-up inspections and to have a volunteer in charge to accumulate and report the inspection results to the board. There was discussion to send a letter to residents a few months prior to the inspections to allow homeowners to prepare their homes. Any homeowner who would like to participate or lead the inspection is encouraged to contact any board member.
The 2013 budget was reviewed and approved. The 2013 assessment for Stoneybrook Homeowner’s will be $199.01. As was discussed in October’s meeting, $4000 was removed from our reserve fund and was allocated as a credit to each homeowner on a monthly basis. The credit per home is $2.65/month.

that two units have been sold; 748 Drury Ct. and 701 Colby Ct. Thirty-three owner correspondences have been sent out since the last board meeting, most deal with past due balances, expired in-surance certificates, and garage violations. Treasurer’s Report
The operating fund balance is $137,481 and the reserve fund balance is $214,802. There are 28 homeowners that are over 60 days delinquent in paying assessments for a delinquency rate of 8%. A motion was made and passed to accept the Treasurer’s report.Other Business
The large garage at 585 Dunham is leaking water into the back of the garage. The board approved a trial project to install gutters on the back of the garage that would be tied into the drains in the front of the garage in hopes that the water would then drain straight into the ground to alleviate some of the water running through the garage. The board
approved the trial project, with cost not to exceed $1000.00.
All garages are currently insured by Nationwide Insurance. For the past two years the cost of insurance has been $6,000.00. Nationwide did a new audit of the garages and determined that they were undervalued. As such, Nationwide is increasing the premium to $7903.00 and anticipates that this amount will increase over the next five years. Property Manager will entertain new bids to see if Nationwide is still cost effective.
The board is looking into a new policy that would allow emergency entry into units. Most condo associations allow for such entry in cases where water pipes have burst and other such extreme circumstances. Property Manager will bring examples of such contracts to the next board meeting.

A Management Report was submit-ted in writing and was available to the audience.
Al Villasenor pointed out that the AT&T agreement put into place will provide each of the three neighborhood recreation centers with dedicated WIFI and two AT&T U-Verse connections in each facility. The Neighborhood Committees will be responsible for
providing the TV (and arrange for securing/locking it into place to prevent vandalism or theft). Al will be contacting each of the Neighborhood Committees to determine their interest and make notification of the dates of installation at the neighborhood rec centers. It would be optimum for the Neighborhood Committees to have any TV equipment available if interested in using the AT&T U-Verse service. The usage, service and security protocols will be developed. Cris Mekuly made a motion to accept the Management Report, seconded by Paul Kelly. At vote, all aye, motion carried.

The 2011 Audit is nearly complete and is “unremarkable” which is a good report card. Community Manager’s Report
Administrative & Finance:• ADP TotalSource transition is still in process and the initial phase is
complete. The process has not been without issue and will continue to be monitored.
• The Draft Audit follow-up items have been compiled and will be returned to the Mark Cantey auditing firm.
• The proposed investment policy has been reviewed by the Treasurer and is in New Business for vote.
Maintenance/Landscape:• Covered Bridge project has been completed and the Village has been
contacted for final approval. Still no word from the Village.• Some ongoing regular Landscape projects will be deferred until next
year as much repair to turf is needed due to drought stress. New turf is coming in well.
• The barrier on HeatherRidge Drive will be repaired and replaced by the Village along with a light that came down years ago.
• The Covered Bridge Recreation Center has been sided. There is a follow-up issue that is being addressed.
• We are exploring the option of giving StoneyBrook residents the option to opt out of snow plowing provided by HUA. This same concept has been communicated to Cambridge. To date, no requests have come in.
Other:• As part of the AT&T agreement, they will soon be providing free
wi-fi service and television packages to the HUA facilities including the neighborhood recreation centers. Please be aware that while the service will be available, each facility would have to provide their own televisions. Timelines will be given to the committees when known.

terms not to exceed 24-months for liquidity. Seconded by Mark Hutchison and at vote, all aye, motion carried.Golf Visions Budget
(enclosure) The Finance Committee reviewed all regular budgeting issues in their meetings and before the 2013 Budget was formally approved. Sam Dent made a motion to accept the HeatherRidge Golf Course 2013 Budget from Golf Visions as presented, seconded by Carole Stern. At vote, all aye, motion carried.Open Discussion For Homeowners
Paul Kelly of the Covered Bridge Condominium Association (CBCA). The CBCA applied for, processed, and received FHA approval so that buyers can purchase condominiums utilizing FHA loans. This allows buyers to pay 3.5% down payment (opposed to the normal 20%) and they hope to expand the selling market for the condominiums. The cost of application was approximately $1,000 and certification is good for two years. Paul suggested that other homeowner associations may be interested in apply-ing for FHA approval of units in their neighborhoods. There was discussion on pro’s and con’s. Each individual neigh-borhood residential association will make their own decisions.
Cris Mekuly made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Carole Stern; at vote, all aye, motion carried.
Adjournment at 7:30 pm. Next Meeting – Tuesday, January 22, 2013
Sam Dent, HUA Board SecretaryCathy Mcgrath, Recording Secretary
An Executive Session was held at the conclusion of the regular meeting.

Highlighting the beautiful place you’ve createdDecember, 2012
Story and Images by Melissa Parker
Glad tidings Stoneybrook! ‘Tis the Season to be jolly! No matter which holiday you celebrate,
this is a magical time of year filled with family, friends, and good will.
This holiday season, create a warm and welcoming en-trance into your home with wreaths made of real evergreen boughs, winter berries, and juniper.
One money saving idea: Many Christmas tree lots will give their trimmed boughs at the end of each day free of charge. Winterberries have been very difficult to find in the past, but this year, Mary’s Green House on O’Plaine Road as well as Home Depot are carrying them, along with juniper, and tallow berries (which are white in color).

Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Scotch Short Bread Cookies
Ingredients• 2 cups of softened butter• 1 cup white sugar• 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract• 4 cups of flour
DirectionsPreheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Stir in va-nilla; add flour and mix well.
Put through cookie press and form cookies onto baking sheets. Bake for 10 - 12 minutes.
Window candles have many different meanings in differ-ent cultures. The origin of window candles often leads back to ancient Ireland. Some say the candle in the window was meant as a message to the Biblical Mary and Joseph: there is room here for you and your coming child. Others say it held a similar meaning for weary travelers in general--an indication of the legendary Irish hospitality: come in and join us, there is room at our hearth for you this evening.
In the pioneer days, when homes were spread far apart, the candle in the window meant that any traveler was welcome. Many lives are said to have been saved by the faint glimpse of a candle’s glow through the swirl of a blinding storm.
In our modern culture, window candles create a simple, inviting warmth to all passers-by.
With the pretty decorations and all of our favorite things comes the delicious smell of holiday cookies baking in the oven. One holiday favorite among kids and parents (Santa and the elves too) is shortbread. This flakey, but-tery cookie is easy to make and can be pressed or frosted with little effort. The kids will love decorating these for Santa’s arrival snack!
Happy Holidays!

Covered Bridge Recreation Center Hot Tub Information
The hot tub and spa area in the CBRC has had the State of Illinois Health Department inspection and unfortunately must be closed pending further State inspection.
The State of Illinois Health Depart-ment has instituted stricter require-ments on commercial hot tubs to in-clude engineering design, water quality, safety standards, and water treatment systems. (Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act.) The CBRC hot tub and spa area do not meet the criteria and HUA and the Covered Bridge Neighborhood Committee are trying to determine if the existing facilities can be adapted or modified to meet the code specifications.
The hot tub is clean, sanitary, and well maintained. The potential closure is due to the fact that the hot tub is residential grade and not intended for commercial use.
