After several wild moments of vehicular may-hem, a car thief with more than 80 prior convic-tions is back behind bars.

An Abbotsford Police officer was on patrol just before 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday when he heard a com-motion coming from a car dealership at Garden Street and South Fraser Way.

The officer was surprised to see a man crashing a Pontiac Firefly into several unoccupied cars on the lot of Windmill Auto Sales.

The driver was attempting to steal the Pontiac, but it was blocked in by other vehicles

that he was trying to ram past. The of-ficer called for backup and attempted to stop the driver, who continued to smash into parked cars. At one point

he drove at the officer, narrowly missing him. Several other officers arrived, pulled the man out of the vehicle and arrested him.

The 31-year-old is back in prison and is facing several charges. Const. Ian MacDonald said eight vehicles were damaged. No one was injured during the “extremely dangerous” incident, he added.

The man is from out of province but had been in-carcerated in the area and had been released from jail about a week ago. He was on parole for theft of auto, uttering threats and breach. MacDonald said the suspect has more than 80 prior convictions, in-cluding for fraud and possession of stolen property.

He now faces charges of dangerous driving, as-sault with a weapon, possession of stolen property, mischief and possession of a break-in instrument.

Yale secondary rugby star Emily Pollastretti powers through tacklers from Semiahmoo secondary Saturday during the B.C provincial high school girls rugby championship’s AAA bronze medal game in North Vancouver. Yale was one of three schools to claim a provincial medal. For more, see A18.

Mixed response to McCallum projectMajor development would feature Cabela’s as anchor

Alex BUTLERAbbotsford News

A large commercial development proposed on McCallum Road – which would include a Cabela’s outfitters store as an anchor tenant – brought a mix of opposition and support at a public hearing on Monday.

Supporters of the McCallum Junction project cited the po-tential for the development to bring jobs and economic activ-ity, but opponents suggested the project doesn’t align with concepts set out in the city’s ongoing official community plan (OCP) update, Abbotsforward.

While some neighbours of the project noted they could benefit from increased commercial businesses, others were con-cerned about the impact of ongoing con-struction on property values.

The 130,000-sq.ft. development, which would include a 70,000-sq.ft Cabela’s store, requires rezoning and an OCP amendment. The current OCP designates the site as 88 per cent city residential land and 12 per cent commercial, while the proposal involves 81 per cent commercial and 19 per cent residential.

Abbotsford is currently developing a new OCP – a plan that guides decision-making on growth and development in the city – and while a city staff report expressed support for in-creasing the commercial space on site to accommodate the Cabela’s, it noted the additional space may adversely impact the development of “walkable, livable and complete commu-nities within other areas of the city including the U-District.”

Bridget Belliveau, who is an owner and strata council mem-ber on Salton Road, said everyone she’s talked to in that com-plex is excited about the development. She said it will make the community walkable and thinks it will increase property values through the addition of a drug store, grocery store and other retail.

Derrick Swallow, who lives across from the proposed devel-opment and was involved in early planning for the U-District as a student at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), said

the development is “car-oriented,” as a large portion of the land is needed for parking.

The site would have 639 parking spots.Swallow also cited concerns about the

impact on U-District planning that is un-derway, with support from the city and university.

Dylan Thiessen noted that the Cabela’s website already indicates a location is open-ing soon in Abbotsford, and on the website of a developer selling homes near the site, it states that McCallum Junction will be open-

ing in late 2015. He said it “makes this entire exercise almost feel useless, like it’s just one more hurdle city council has to jump over before it finally gets to build its development.”

Rick MacDonald, who lives across from the site, said that while people speak about making Abbotsford a desirable place to live, he thinks it already is. MacDonald, a business owner, said the development would be good for the city as it needs commercial development and jobs.

After the public hearing, council deferred their decision on the project to an upcoming meeting.

Alex BUTLERAbbotsford News

A new book on Abbotsford’s history was dedicated to for-mer Mayor George F. Ferguson on Monday at a meeting of city council.

The MSA Museum Society recently announced the pub-lication of the book Village to City: A Commitment to Excellence and Innovation, which features contributions from more than forty local authors about a variety of topics.

Ferguson was mayor of the Abbotsford district from 1972 until 1995, when he became mayor of the newly amal-gamated city from 1995 to 2002. He was once again elected mayor in 2005 and served until 2008.

Coun. Patricia Ross, who worked on the project and

was elected while Ferguson was mayor, said all those in-volved were excited to dedi-cate the book to him. His was the first name that came to mind “because throughout all the various amalgama-tions, from the different vil-lages to what is now the city of Abbotsford, the one con-stant has been former Mayor George Ferguson.”

She said he guided the city with integrity and care.

Ferguson thanked those in-volved for the dedication. “I appreciate the honour that you have bestowed on me.”

The MSA Museum Society will hold a book launch Thursday (May 28) from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Trethewey House Heritage site (2313 Ware St.). Writers will be present to sign purchased copies and refreshments will be served.

Women and duckling rescuedPair need help after trying to assist bird

Two women trying to save a baby duck in Fishtrap Creek had to be rescued themselves Monday eve-ning when they found themselves stranded on a small island as dark-ness approached.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue and para-medics crews were called to the park just after 8 p.m. by one of two women who had attempted to help a duckling that seemed to have been injured by a fish hook.

The women became mired in mud. Although they were able to extract themselves, they then

found themselves on a small is-land. One of the women called 9-1-1 and relayed their location, but her phone soon died.

Crews were nevertheless able to find the women. To get to the pair, though, they had to crawl through blackberry bushes and brambles and use a ladder to reach the women.

After about 45 minutes, the crews were able to help the women to safety, along with the small duck. The bird was is in good condi-tion and was taken to Elizabeth’s Wildlife Centre. This duckling was the subject of a would-be rescue

that went awry Monday. KEVIN MACDONALD Abbotsford News

Donations help to digitize

Abbotsford’s history

Generous community donations will help pre-serve Abbotsford’s history through the purchase of a new microfilm scanner printer for the com-munity archives at The Reach.

Individuals, community organizations and businesses immediately leaped up to donate the $9,100 required for the ScanPro 1100.

“They did this because they understand the value of making the vast library of information The Reach collections contain accessible to ev-eryone,” said Kris Foulds, collections manager.

To provide public access to this vast quantity of historical information requires a microfilm reader/printer, which is used for in-house re-search and accessed by the public. Unfortunately, this piece of equipment broke down and needed to be replaced with a more efficient and software compatible printer/scanner. The ScanPro 1100 is a newer compact model that is more efficient because it operates by connecting to a user computer and provides an image using the com-puter’s monitor in addition to superior technical features. The new equipment will guarantee the continuation of the vital work of digitizing and uploading historic images to The Reach online photo archives site, which has a database of 26,000 images.

Donors got a first-hand view of the new, next to the old equipment, during a donor celebration at The Reach archives this week.

To check out the ScanPro 1100 visit the archives at The Reach (32388 Veterans Way) or check his-toric images at www.thereach.ca.

Construction underway on 50-bed mental health facility

Alex BUTLERAbbotsford News

A new 50-bed mental health facility for adults is under construction in Abbotsford and is ex-pected to be complete in the summer of 2016.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday at the site at 33134 Marshall Road, near the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Mayor Henry Braun told those in attendance that the project is im-portant to the commu-nity for many reasons.

He said it will provide people with mental health challenges with support and care and it “will be right in their own community, where they will be surround-ed by their friends and family.”

The development is intended to replace 30 licensed mental health beds from a facility that closed down in 2012. It will also include an

additional 20 assisted-living units.

Licensed care beds are the highest level of care for mental health, which includes nursing support, medication, meals and more. The residents in the assisted living units have a more independent living situ-ation, but are also pro-vided with one meal a day.

The site will be man-

aged and operated by the MPA Society, which has been operating mental health hous-ing for 44 year and runs multiple facili-ties around the Lower Mainland.

David MacIntyre, ex-ecutive director of the society, said they are looking forward to pro-viding mental health services in this area.

“This project will pro-

vide meaningful and ongoing support for 50 people who are in recovery for mental ill-ness.”

The provincial gov-ernment has arranged about $7.7 million in construction financ-ing, while Fraser Health will provide $755,000 in equity and about $2.5 million annually in op-erating and support funding.

Pulling onto North Parallel Road Monday morning I noticed four young people decked out in rain suits, armed with weed-eaters, wading through a thicket of wild chervil. Parked oppo-site them was a Fraser Valley Regional District service truck, indicating their employer.

What they were undertaking is a daunting task – attempting to control a noxious weed that has virtually taken over the freeway median and shoulders in this part of the Valley. Particularly hard hit is the section east of Whatcom Road.

While the white flowers of this scourge may look “pretty” to passing motorists, the plant is rapidly taking over not only the median grasses, but adjacent farm-land.

Commonly known as cow parsley, it is from the family of that little bit of green you often get served as a garnish on a restaurant meal.

Except this stuff is not edible, nor does it grow in tiny little bunches like the herb we know so well.

In fact, it is considered a very serious threat to forage and vegetable crops due to its invasiveness that, left unchecked, eventually chokes out its competition for growing space.

The plant is native to Europe and the UK, and is thought to have arrived here as part of wildflower seed mixes.

How it managed to infiltrate the Fraser Valley from Abbotsford to Chilliwack is anyone’s guess … perhaps a bride tossed her bouquet out the window en route to honeymoon quarters.

In any event, I first noticed the odd flowering plant a few years ago; two years ago it really began to take off and now is endemic along the freeway cor-ridor.

It is also a survivor, resistant to all her-bicides except one. Mowing and trim-ming with weed-eaters only appears to encourage its survival. However, those

two actions at least do, to some extent, curtail the flowering and seed-produc-ing stages which curtails its spreading further.

Soils tilled annually apparently resist its expansion, but fallow pastureland becomes ideal habitat.

According to control suggestions from B.C.’s agriculture ministry, the best way to eradicate the plant is to pull it out of the ground – except that its taproot can extend six feet straight down. Unless those kids with the weed-eaters have herculean strength, that won’t happen.

Once the plant flowers and produces seeds, it dies. Which is a good thing, ex-cept in that process its millions of seeds are borne on the wind or distributed by

birds, inundate surrounding lands. Andthe freeway, with the vortex created bythe constant passing of large trucks, isan ideal medium for distribution.

The fertile soils of the Fraser Valley, which so far is the only place in B.C. to be affected by this scourge, are idealmedium for its future propagation.

Unfortunately, the only governmentefforts at eradication are on public land, with no attempt to my knowledge to enter private property.

This should change. I recall when tansy ragwort was the

noxious weed de jour, the regional dis-trict would note the plant in your fieldand suggest you eliminate it, or they would do it for you. Combined with apublic education program, that worked, and the weed is now relatively rare.

This needs to take place with wildchervil.

What also needs to occur is judicious application of the herbicide dicamba.

Otherwise, what we like to call the breadbasket of British Columbia maysoon by irreparably damaged.

Residents have raised some valid ques-tions about a major development slated for McCallum Road and Hwy. 1.

The proposed project would cover 130,000 sq. ft, more than half of which would be a Cabela’s outfitters store.

At a public hearing on the project Monday night, an astute resident pointed out that the Cabela’s website indicates an Abbotsford store is “coming soon” (albeit noting that council approval is still required.) And on the website of a developer selling homes near the site is a statement that McCallum Junction will be opening in late 2015.

As proposed, the entire development would involve about 80 per cent commercial and 20 per cent residential. That’s virtually a reverse of the building mix proportion outlined in the existing Official Community Plan (OCP). The city is also in the process of creating a new OCP, which ostensibly includes the concept of “walkable, livable” communities. City staff have noted this project may adversely impact that objective.

Public hearings are a key stage in the devel-opment process, during which residents have an opportunity to present supporting and opposing views. Upon consideration, councils can accept a proposal, reject it, or require changes.

Abbotsford council has yet to give a final vote on this plan. There are many good rea-sons to proceed with the project as proposed – key among them the new jobs and econom-ic growth brought by the businesses which would establish at the site.

However, given the apparent advanced stages of anticipation by the anchor ten-ant and homebuilders, along with the major amendment required for the community plan, some people are asking if this is essen-tially a done deal.

That perception casts a shadow on the pur-pose and credibility of public hearings, and council’s commitment to an updated OCP.

The mayor and council would do well to ad-dress both concerns when announcing their decision on this project.

Reduce number of federal ridings, ministersRegarding the Electoral Boundaries Commissions proposed

changes for Abbotsford:I submitted my response on May 25 to the Electoral Boundaries

Commission, requesting that they not split Abbotsford up into five ridings, four of which are proposed to be shared with other municipalities.

While on the site, I had a look at every one of the 29 submis-sions from others concerned about Abbotsford’s fate. And what an eye-opener it was. Not because everyone was opposed to the changes (they were), but because in actual fact, there are 70 submissions regarding the changing of Hope from a Chilliwack riding to an Interior riding.

Hard to fathom, but I guess just not enough in Abbotsford care about this issue to spend three minutes to send in even a cursory objection.

Yet, I see people every day parked on the side of the road, texting something to someone.

A bit sad, really.I did get a laugh though, when reading a submission from

Abbotsford which said, “May I suggest that B.C. revert to the Ontario practice of same riding boundaries as federal electoral districts. This would reduce our allotment to 42, (and) lead to many efficiencies...”

Apart from having an MLA for Abbotsford to Ashcroft and Alaska, I am sure the writer would also like to see federal Conservatives reduce from the bloated 39 ministers they have.

It would be a great savings if they would follow the lead of the NDP in Alberta and have just 12. Good enough for Jesus and the NDP, should be good enough for the Harper government.

ACS presents Medium RareProduction about a ‘comedic mishap’

Abbotsford Christian Secondary’s (ACS) the-atre arts department presents “Medium Rare: A Comedic Mishap of Sold Homes and Lost Grandmas” starting May 29.

Medium Rare is a play about a newly-wed couple, Harry and Bunny Polk, who get more than they bar-gain for when they buy their first house.

The fun begins at dinner when Harry and Bunny realize the house not only came furnished, but with a grandma as well.

Grandma Nina, a particularly quirky character, decides it would be best for her to live in the house with Harry and Bunny while her grand-daughter moves out.

The humour contin-ues as Nina holds a meeting of her Early Birds Club at six in the morning, entertains a crazy friend and al-most gets Harry fired from his job.

The ACS acting 11/12 class designed the poster for the play, se-lected costumes, prac-tised stage makeup and did other projects to prepare for the pro-duction.

Performances are

at 7 p.m. on May 29 and 30, and June 4-6 at ACS, 35011 Old Clayburn Rd.

Tickets for the Thursday, June 4 per-formance are $5 in ad-vance and $8 at the door, but all other

shows are $8 in ad-vance and $10 at the door.

Tickets are available at the school office, online at abbotsford-christian.com/events or by calling 604-755-1891.

ANDY ANDERSONBusiness ManagerAfter decades in the automotive industry, it was simply time to let it go. Andy has many stories to share and will have the time to tell anyone who listens, in his quiet neighborhood of Walnut Grove. A true performer, he will be missed.

The staff and management of Murray GM wish to thank and acknowledge the efforts and dedication to Ray and Andy for their many years of service and contributions.

“You will both be missed!” ~ Rob Taylor, General Manager

RAY SOLBERGSenior AccountantAfter 25 years in the automotive industry, Ray is retiring to travel with his wife, Cathy, before he becomes more of a burden to his children, Michael & Crystal (ha ha). His vast knowledge will be sorely missed by offi ce staff and will need to dig deep to replace his know-how.

Run for Rest helps Matthew’s HouseSecond annual event at Mill Lake Park

The second annual Run for Rest takes place Sunday, June 7 at Mill Lake Park.

The event raises funds for Matthew’s House, a respite facil-ity for children with complex health care needs.

The five-km run began last year as a Grade 10 class project at Yale Secondary and this year has expand-ed to include other schools and the wider community.

Organizers Kourtnie Sohl and Morgan Boldt are challeng-ing other schools to participate and raise money.

The challenge for them this year is that all of the orga-nization of the run is being done on their

own time – this is no longer a class project.

Kourtnie loves pho-tography, does scrap-booking and makes a variety of crafts that she enters into craft

fairs. She has won several

awards for her art-istry. She’s also a self-taught guitarist and is part of the Kiwanis Educating Youth

(KEY) Club at school, serving as co-presi-dent. Event planning is something she’s considering in the fu-ture.

Morgan is a sportsenthusiast who en-joys hiking, skiing and biking. She espe-cially loves the stress relief she gets from long distance run-ning.

She also loves play-ing guitar and pho-tography and enjoystraveling. She knowsthat her future willinclude travel and doing something thatmakes a difference inthe lives of others.

They said that choosing to support Matthew’s House wasan easy decision.

“Loving parents atthe end of their ropeneed a place where they can leave theirchildren in capableand honest hands, a place where they know that their chil-dren will be happyand safe,” Morgan says.

Kourtnie agrees. “When I hear the

stories of the differ-ence that Matthew’s House makes to par-ents and children, itmakes me feel really good inside, know-ing we can support this unique place that makes such a hugeimpact on so manyfamilies.”

Run for Rest takes place from noon to3 p.m. Cost for reg-istration is $5, with further donations ac-cepted. For more in-formation and to reg-ister, visit matthouse.ca/run.

Matthew’s House is located on the DaveLede Campus of Care on Marshall Road, next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Morgan Boldt and Kourtnie Sohl are the organizers for the second annual Run for Rest on June 7 to raise money for Matthew’s House.

Bateman grabs silverWith gold the goal for Yale, team

manager Marisa Meola said the semifinal was a disappointment, with several controversial deci-sions and a late Yale drive deep into Carson Graham territory that failed to result in points.

But the final saw redemption, with Kyla Knox, Mackenzie Carson, Anna Lowrey and Emily Pollastretti all scoring tries and Sapna Deo add-ing two converts and a penalty kick.

Pollastretti was also named the Lions’ representative on the Presidents 15 slate of the tourna-ment’s best players. Sydney Stoltz, Shalaya Valenzuela, Alex Motoc, Alice Ned and Sarah Klok also had big games for the Lions.

“What stands for me is the quality of leadership that our senior girls

show,” head coach Larry Colby said. “They will be missed.  The abun-dance of talent from our younger players gives us a very bright future ahead.”

Meola added: “We are a big family both on and off the field. The girlswork hard and we have all gotten toknow each other well.”

And the Robert BatemanTimberwolves grabbed a silver medal in the Tier 2 competition with a 22-10 victory over Clayton Heights. It was an emotional gamefor the senior players, whose clubrugby teammate Chantal McLeandied in a car crash in the fall.

The strong showing saw Hadwin earn $220,350 and move up to 92nd in the FedEx Cup standings. Abbotsford’s Nick Taylor finished 27th at the event.

Teams play WednesdayThe last five minutes of that game

saw Bateman’s defenders short-handed with a man on the sin bin. But despite West Vancouver’s size advantage, the Bateman’s players were able to resist a ferocious push towards the goal line as time wound down.

“It was just a massive team effort all the way across the board,” said Bateman co-coach Dave Cameron. “We handled their fightback quite well.”

Both teams move on to the quar-terfinals, which will take place Wednesday at Rotary Stadium and Exhibition Park fields.

Yale – who won their first senior boys Fraser Valley Championship earlier this month – will square off

with 11th-ranked Lord Tweedsmuirat Rotary. The Lions beat the Surreyschool in Fraser Valley play earlier this year.

Bateman, meanwhile, will takeon second-ranked St. George’s, whobeat Kelowna 76-12 on the first day of provincial play.

Bateman claimed last year’s Fraser Valley Championship, but has a younger team for 2015 and will be significant underdogs against the powerhouse Vancouver side.

“We’re in a game that nobody expects us to win,” Cameron said. “We’re going to put in our best ef-fort.”

Opening ceremonies take place at 12:15 at Rotary Stadium with Bateman and Yale both playing at3:30 p.m.

Million Dollar Hole in One adds ladies’ finalWith Rotary Million Dollar Hole in One fast

approaching, organizers have announced that it is adding a ladies’ final to the event.

Qualifying rounds for the event run from May 30 through June 7 at Fraserglen Golf Course, with finals running June 8.

There are 95 yards between the tee and the pin during the first eight days, but for the final round, the hole is 165 yards away.

There are junior, ladies and Rotary qualify-ing days, and more than $25,000 in prizes will be awarded to the 12 qualifiers per day.

This year, organizers have added a ladies’ final round, with up to 25 women qualifying. From those, the top three will have the chance

to shoot from 135 yards for $100,000, and the best of those will move on to the final shoot-out, where a hole-in-one will net the golfer $1 million.

The majority of proceeds raised this year will benefit Abbotsford Hospice Society’s Holmberg House.

“This year marks a milestone for the RotaryClub of Abbotsford,” says president Hugh Ellis. “With over one half million raised already, we are thankful to our sponsors and supporters who join us in meeting our goals.”

Ladies Day is June 3, and Juniors Day is June 6.For more information, visit RotaryMillion.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Margaret grew up in the Okanagan Valley and later moved to Chilliwack, West Vancouver and Abbotsford. She was a talented artist and an independent businesswom-an who owned a hat shop, ceramics studio, and together with her husband Herm oper-ated a bed and breakfast from their home in Abbotsford.Margaret shared her birthday with the Queen and in true regal fashion she liked to do things her way. She was always interested in politics, kept track of world events and enjoyed many discussions of the state of affairs, joking about what could be done if she were in charge. Margaret said that when the time came, she wanted to be here today and gone tomorrow. She was an amazing person with a great sense of humour and we were so lucky to have her in our lives. Margaret was an inspiration to many and she was forever young. It is hard to imagine our lives without her but she would like us all to remember the sign above her bed…Keep Calm and Carry On. Her family would like to thank dear friend Mary Enns for the excellent care she gave Margaret during the past few years. At Margaret’s request there will be no service.
