DEPUTY PRINCIPAL WELCOME Welcome to the 2017 school year and to Aberfoyle Park High School if joining us for the first time. I would like to thank the large number of parents, caregivers and students who have made me so welcome in my first few weeks at Aberfoyle Park High School. The staff have also been very welcoming and supportive as I start my new role. I am really excited and pleased to have been appointed as the Deputy Principal of Aberfoyle Park High School for the next five years and I look forward to working with all members of the school community in the interests of the young people in our care. DAYMAP Connect Parent Portal

Daymap Connect is an extension of the Daymap Learning Management System which provides Aberfoyle Park High School parents and caregivers with access to key school and student information both at home 24/7. The easy-to-use system allows parents to create and manage their own accounts for Daymap Connect, requiring only one login and password per parent, with the option to provide multiple logins to access details for all of their students enrolled in the school.

To access Daymap Connect, go to our school website at aphs.sa.edu.au and click on the Parent Portal link at the top right hand corner of the page. This will take you to the Daymap Connect log in screen.

If you are a new user then select the “New User?” option. Once prompted on the next screen you will be required to enter your email address which is the email address registered at the school, and a student code which is your child’s ID number on their student card.

Once you have entered the details, a username and password will be sent to your email account.

We have also developed a Daymap Connect Quick Start guide that provides further information about how to navigate in the Daymap Parent Portal. The guide is on our school website and can be accessed via this direct link http://www.aphs.sa.edu.au/web/node/336

DAYMAP Connect Parent Portal session

I would like to offer parents the opportunity to come into the school to work with staff on how to access the Daymap Connect Parent Portal and to show you some of its features. If you are interested in attending such an event, please email me [email protected] so that I can gauge interest and then plan a session for later in Term 1.

2017 SCHOOL CAPTAINS Dylan Ricardi – School Captain "Hey Everyone! My name is Dylan Ricardi, and I am one of your School Captains for 2017. My background at this school includes being a part of the IGNITE program since 2013 and I have had previous leadership roles in groups and science extra curricular activities. My focus this year will be on improving the rate of attendance and overall spirit at Sports Day through student participation. Also, I plan on making more use of the sports equipment facilities by the oval for all year levels to encourage physical activity and provide an opportunity to those who wish to participate in sporting activities. Our aim is to be approachable and fully represent the ideas of the students, so feel free to send us an email or catch up with us in the yard!"

From Left: Jacinta Teigeler, Marion Coady, Sarah Bullitis and Dylan Ricardi

Sarah Bullitis – School Captain Hi, my name is Sarah Bullitis and I am the female school captain for 2017. I have been at APHS since Year 8 and have enjoyed being part of the Ambassador program, Student Voice and the Big Brother/Sister program in Year 11. To have the opportunity to be a school captain this year allows Dylan and I to ensure that we are doing all we can to make our last year a great one and be able to leave it in it’s best condition for the following years. In doing this I would love to see that we are getting the ideas and opinions of all students in many different ways so that no student feels as if they don’t have the opportunity to have their voice heard. Dylan and I are very excited to get the ball rolling and can’t wait to see what this year will throw at us!! Jacinta Teigeler – Student Voice President Hi! I’m Jacinta and I am the Student Voice President for 2017. The Student Voice President is a newly formed role within APHS dedicated to ensuring that the opinions and ideas of all students are being heard. Previously, I have been a School Ambassador, a member of the Environment Committee, an International Ambassador as well as a few other leadership roles. Due to these experiences, my aim for this year is to focus on the health and wellbeing of all students as well as improving leadership within our school and improving our school culture. I’m so excited to work with those of you who may be interested in Student Voice. Together we can come up with some awesome ideas and plans to make 2017 an enjoyable year.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Aberfoyle Park High School welcomed 13 new International students at the beginning of term. Of the 13 new students one student is part of the Graduate High School program which is SACE Completion and the other 12 are here as part of the International Study Abroad program. EMOTIONAL MANAGEMENT FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS WITH ASD Prof Tony Attwood and Dr Michelle Garnett are presenting an all day workshop on Emotion Management for Children and Teens with ASD. The workshop is on Friday 24 March, 2017 from 9.30am until 4.00pm at the Arkaba Hotel, 150 Glen Osmond Road, Fullarton SA 5063. The presentation is for parents, carers and family members as well as health and educational professionals. Children and adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Disorder have difficulty with comprehension, expression and regulation of emotions, resulting in high levels of anxiety, stress, anger and/or depression and subsequent effects on family, teachers, friends and peers. Conventional strategies that encourage emotion management for “typical” children do not seem to be as effective with those who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The child’s quality of life, self-esteem and well-being will be influenced by their ability to manage emotions and difficulties with emotion management can lead to being suspended and having a notoriety that will affect the attitude of teachers and peers as well as the attitude of the child to themselves. Through several decades of working with children and adolescents with ASD and thier families and schools Michelle and Tony have discovered, developed and evaluated emotion management strategies based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that have proven to be effective in assisting children with ASD to learn about and manage their emotions from anxiety to love and affection. WELCOME TO OUR NEW YEAR 8 STUDENTS With only our 253 new Year 8 students on site on Day One this year, our students set about meeting their classmates, making new friends, finding their way around and most importantly having fun. Student Feedback: What did you enjoy about your first day at Aberfoyle Park High School? o The APHS

Explorer task, as it let us find our way around the school on our own.

o Meeting new friends and getting to know the school o I enjoyed pretty much everything, it was a great new

experience o I enjoyed using Kahoot in science because I had used

Kahoot a little bit in primary school, so using it made me feel a bit more comfortable.

o Pretty much everything. It seems really awesome and all the activities we did were fun and interesting

o I really enjoyed getting to know more people. I also liked being able to meet some new teachers that we will be having and getting to know the school a bit more and where everything is.

o I enjoyed all the games that the Big Brothers and Sisters ran to help us get to know the other students.

o Bonding and getting to know different students doing the APHS Explorer.

o I enjoyed meeting new people and being the only ones in the school. It made me feel a lot more at ease and better about starting.

YEAR 10 T20 KNOCKOUT CRICKET On Tuesday 14/2, the boys played Wirreanda at Wirreanda. The weather was perfect and after winning the toss, APHS decided to bowl first. In his 2nd over James Hay was on fire taking three wickets, including two that were caught and bowled. At the end of the over he had the astonishing figures of 3/2. Wirreanda never really recovered, to finish out for 53. Although the outfield was slow our opening batsmen, Jack Arthur and Bryce Wickstein, were never really under pressure given the small target that was set. They both managed to share evenly in the run chase without losing their wickets. Next match the team will be up against Reynella East. It will be a big challenge but coming off such a dominating win the boys are confident this year could be special!

2016 WORLD CHALLENGE TRIP From 26 November to 23 December 2016, ten senior students, accompanied by Mrs Nicolle, Mr Mosley and our World Challenge Leader Ben, undertook a World Challenge Expedition in Peninsula Malaysia. Whilst being challenged and learning a lot about life and themselves, they had a lot of fun and made life long bonds with each other. During the month the students challenged themselves by working together to organise the budget, book transport and accommodation, navigate their way around an unfamiliar country, make decisions about what to do with their rest and relaxation time, food and how best to support the community for their project. Our volunteer community project was at Kirtarsh Home for under privileged and disabled children and adults, which tested the resources of the students who dug deep to put aside their feelings of pity for the residents’ plights and find engaging activities for the large range of ages and abilities of people in the home, living up to their guiding motto: ‘it is about them, not us.’ Whilst in a week we couldn’t implement a lot of difference, we agreed that long term, as a group, we would attempt to raise more money to help them to continue to rebuild their fire damaged home and also find ways to contribute through volunteering in our community here in Australia.

Other highlights of the trip included, white water rafting, beach days on a gorgeous island, sleeping in a cave in the jungle, the stunning views from the day hikes in the Cameron Highlands, the night markets, as well as the delicious food in Little India.

We will always remember, amongst so many other memories, the feeling of relief and luxury of returning to the dry and leach-free cave after our nights in the jungle, the amazing chicken soup, our pimped-out bus to the Cameron Highlands and tuk tuks in Malacca, the hours of amusement from the rope on the beach, the farewell party at Kirtarsh, the beautiful light show on the department store and all the many in jokes. Well done to all the students who managed the budget so well that we had enough money in the kitty to splurge on a ‘beach resort’ at the end of the trip, as well as a few other luxuries along the way.

Mr Mosley and I were very impressed with the group’s maturity, reliance, persistence, commitment and support of one another. World Challenge is an excellent opportunity for young people to test themselves whilst gaining valuable life skills and confidence. If you are interested in finding out more about this experience head to the World Challenge website, talk to some of the team members who have just returned and look out for the expression of interest meetings and notes soon.
