    can qu ickly be positioned to th e desired p oint; a qu ick dou ble tap on th e Touch pad

    the standard character and function keys plus 12 programmable function keys (F1

    through F12).

    2 .2 Unpac king Ins truc tion s

    The pa ckaging diagram for th e notebook comp u ter is shown in Figu re 2-1. Unpa ck

    However, a type III PCMCIA device can be installed if the Floppy Drive is removed

    from the notebook and the optional PCMCIA Module is installed..

    1. Review th e inst allation inst ru ctions su pp lied with th e PCMCIA option car d(s).

    2. Open th e Type I/ II PCMCIA comp ar tm ent cover on th e left side of th e

    notebook.

    3. To ins ert a PCMCIA card , align th e card with th e socket an d slide th e card

    into the socket until it locks into place. To install a Type III option, you must

    rem ove th e Floppy Drive from th e right side of th e n otebooka nd ins tall th e

    PCMCIA Option Assembly..

    4. To eject a PCMCIA card , first ens u re th at th e n otebook is not accessing the

    mem ory card or device. Under Wind ows 9 5, go to the Cont rol Pan el, PC Card

    an d direct the car d to stop before rem oving card .

    2 .4 Ins tall ing t he Batt e ry Pack(s )

    The s tan da rd con figura tion of th e Extensa Notebook is equipped with a s ingle

    ba ttery pack th at is ins erted from th e front righ t side of the compu ter. However, if

    you can do with out th e Floppy Drive, you can u se th e floppy drive ba y to h ous e a

    second Lithium Ion battery pack.

    To remove or replace the battery pack, follow the steps below.

    1. Power off th e notebook, being su re to sa ve you r d ata first .

    2. Locate th e ba ttery door (right side of n otebook n ear the front ). Press th e ba ttery

    door in wards an d slide th e door toward th e front of th e notebook; rem ove the

    bat tery door.

    3. Insert a new or recha rged ba t tery pack into the ba t tery compa rtmen t bay. Make

    su re that th e conta cts are facing up a nd to the rear of the compartm ent .

    Check th e label (facing u p wh en ins erted) ind icating th e posit ive an d

    negative poles of the battery.

    2-5 for port as signm ents ).

    system checkout and software configuration.

    To check ou t the s ystem, set th e power switch on t h e notebook to th e On (I) position

    which init iates th e notebook self test . Du ring self test execution, th e compu ter

    checks th e operation of all key har dware including mem ory an d CPU (an d displays

    copyright and version number data during test execution).

    Upon s u ccessful conclus ion of self test , th e compu ter au toma tically loads its

    operating system an d Win dows environm ent. If self test fails to comp lete an d a n

    error m essa ge is d isplayed, try powering down th e compu ter for a cou ple of minu tes

    an d tu rn ing power back on to repeat self test . If th e error mess age persists, see

    Section 6 for trou bleshooting inform ation.

    2 .8 Con figuring the Sys te m

    The first t ime you power up th e notebook, it au toma tically run s th e Setup Pr ogra mwhich prom pts you for cou ntr y n am e an d printer type. You exit Win dows an d th e

    notebook b egins u nzipping files a nd prepa ring the software for u se. Then it gives

    you th e option of keep ing or rem oving the video.

    The Notebook is preloaded with Wind ows 95 operating system software. Prior to

    extended use of the notebook, create a backup set of system software using the

    you r system u sing the Restore Util ity an d th e set of back u p d iskettes you ve ju st

    created.

    key on the k eyboard.

    NUM (Num Loc k) Ind icator- This LED lights wh en you press th e Fn-F7

    (Nu mLk) keys to toggle on th e n u meric keypad lock fu nction. When th e LED is

    On, th e embedded n u meric keyboard keys generate AT-keypad chara cters an d

    fu nct ions when p ressed in conjun ct ion with the Fn key.

    When the NUM ind icator is Off, pres sing th e Fn key with the ap propriate k eys

    provides cu rsor m ovement , pa ging an d other fun ct ions in the n orma l mode.

    When the NUM indicator is On, the embedded numeric keypad becomes a

    temporary nu meric keypad tha t does not require you to press an y other k ey.

    Keep all floppies when not in u se in a disk s torage box to protect th em from

    damage or loss.

    3 .3 .2 Ins talling/ Rem ov ing PCMCIA Optio ns

    PCMCIA cards are inserted and ejected in much the same way as diskettes:

    Type I or Type II PCMCIA options may be installed in the compartment on the

    left side of th e noteb ook. Type III Options ma y be in st alled on th e righ t side ofthe notebook with the Floppy Drive removed and the PCMCIA Option installed.

    To ins ert a PCMCIA card , align th e card with th e socket a nd slide th e card int o

    the socket until it locks into place. To install a Type III option, you must

    rem ove th e Floppy Drive.

    To eject a PCMCIA car d, go to th e Win dows 9 5 Con trol Pan el, select PC Ca rd

    an d select the card to s top; then press th e release bu t ton an d remove the

    PCMCIA option .

    keyboard or display problem, you first solve th is problem before ru n n in g

    switch is set to the On posit ion an d th at th e system is n ot in Stan dby or s leep

    mode.

    Measu re th e voltage at th e AC Ou tlet or plu g in a k nown good ap plian ce (EG. a

    lamp ) to verify tha t volta ge is p res en t. If th e volta ge is O.K., try replacing th e

    AC Adapter

    Check to see th at th e batter y pack is ins talled correctly (try us ing a r echa rged

    ba ttery pa ck if ba tteryis discha rged).

    6 .2 Preventive Maintenance

    Preventive ma int ena nce is l imited to clean ing th e plastic case, th e keyboard, a nd

    Do not disas semble the ba t tery pack.

    Do not u se th e bat tery pack to power other d evices.

    Do not sh ort the b atter y leads or connect th e batt ery with r eversed p olarity.

    indication.

    read y for operation. Su pplied with th e Win dows 95 system is a facility for creat ing

    problem, you can us e the Wind ows 95 S tartu p disket te to boot the u ni t and

    perform troubleshooting.
