can qu ickly be positioned to th e desired p oint; a qu ick dou ble tap on th e Touch pad

and you have selected an object. Two select buttons (switches) are located along the

fron t edge of th e noteb ook

1 .4 .3 KeyboardThe Extens a Series Keyboard is a n 83/ 84-key, IBM enh an ced-type keyboard with

the standard character and function keys plus 12 programmable function keys (F1

through F12).

Using the Special Fun ction (Fn ) key which ass igns mu ltiple fu nction s to keys, th ekeyboard can em u late th e IBM 101/ 102 k eyboards u sing 83 keys (84 on

intern ation al m odels).

The keyboard h as a 2.77 m m str oke and featu res a sp ecial keyboard interface chip

th at can detect m u ltiple levels of key in pu t (good simu lation of N-key rollover for u p

to 10 keys).

2 .1 Introduction

2 .2 Unpac king Ins truc tion s

The pa ckaging diagram for th e notebook comp u ter is shown in Figu re 2-1. Unpa ck

th e comp u ter u sing the following ins tru ctions :

1 . Carefully cu t th e tape th at s eals the top flap of th e sh ipping carton.

2 . Remove the compu ter an d th e accessories from th e ma in sh ipping carton.

3 . Remove all pr otective coverings from th e comp u ter.

4. To eject a PCMCIA card , first ens u re th at th e n otebook is not accessing the

2 .4 Ins tall ing t he Batt e ry Pack(s )

The s tan da rd con figura tion of th e Extensa Notebook is equipped with a s ingle

ba ttery pack th at is ins erted from th e front righ t side of the compu ter. However, if

you can do with out th e Floppy Drive, you can u se th e floppy drive ba y to h ous e a

second Lithium Ion battery pack.

To remove or replace the battery pack, follow the steps below.

1. Power off th e notebook, being su re to sa ve you r d ata first .

2. Locate th e ba ttery door (right side of n otebook n ear the front ). Press th e ba ttery

door in wards an d slide th e door toward th e front of th e notebook; rem ove the

bat tery door.

3. Insert a new or recha rged ba t tery pack into the ba t tery compa rtmen t bay. Make

su re that th e conta cts are facing up a nd to the rear of the compartm ent .

Check th e label (facing u p wh en ins erted) ind icating th e posit ive an d

negative poles of the battery.

c Caution: There is dange r of explosio n if the battery is incorrectly re-placed. Replace the battery only with th e same or an equivalent type

recommen ded by the manufacturer. Discard used batteries according to

2 .5 Install ing External Devices

Most extern al devices conn ect to the Notebook via th e conn ectors on th e rear of the

notebook an d on th e rear of th e Port Ada pter s u pplied with t he n otebook (see Figure

2-5 for port as signm ents ).

mon itor power cab le into an electrical outlet .

5. Power on th e mon itor, as well as an y other periphera l devices conn ected to th e

notebook; then power u p th e notebook

2 .7 Init ial Sys te m Che cko utAfter you ve inst alled a ll inter n al options an d exter n al cab lin g, you re rea dy for

system checkout and software configuration.

To check ou t the s ystem, set th e power switch on t h e notebook to th e On (I) position

which init iates th e notebook self test . Du ring self test execution, th e compu ter

checks th e operation of all key har dware including mem ory an d CPU (an d displays

copyright and version number data during test execution).

Upon s u ccessful conclus ion of self test , th e compu ter au toma tically loads its

operating system an d Win dows environm ent. If self test fails to comp lete an d a n

error m essa ge is d isplayed, try powering down th e compu ter for a cou ple of minu tes

an d tu rn ing power back on to repeat self test . If th e error mess age persists, see

Section 6 for trou bleshooting inform ation.

2 .8 Con figuring the Sys te m

The first t ime you power up th e notebook, it au toma tically run s th e Setup Pr ogra mwhich prom pts you for cou ntr y n am e an d printer type. You exit Win dows an d th e

notebook b egins u nzipping files a nd prepa ring the software for u se. Then it gives

you th e option of keep ing or rem oving the video.

The Notebook is preloaded with Wind ows 95 operating system software. Prior to

extended use of the notebook, create a backup set of system software using the

The Extensa 450 Series Notebook Compu ters a re equipped with a bu ilt - in mou sedevice called the Touchpad physically located at the bottom of the keyboard (see

Figu re 3 -1).

The cu rsor is posit ioned b y tou ching an d dr aging you r finger in th e direction you

wan t th e curs or to go. Th e select fu nctions a re per form ed eith er by tapping the

touch pa d or by pressing the two bu ttons (switches ) at th e bottom of th e keyboard .

You can cha nge the opera tion of the pa d by chan ging values in th e mou se section of

th e Wind ows 95 Control Pan el. Once you r cu rsor is in th e proper place an d you

wan t to select, us e the left bu tton to click or dou ble click just as you wou ld a m ous e.

3 .2 .5 Keyboard Mode LEDs

The Notebook conta ins th ree keyboard m ode ind icators ju st a bove th e keyboard

on t h e left s ide (n otebook cover open). Th ese LEDs includ e:

CAP (Caps Lock) Ind icator- th is LED indicates th at t h e keyboard is locked in

th e Uppercase m ode. To switch to th e Lowercas e mode, pres s th e Caps Loc k

key on the k eyboard.

NUM (Num Loc k) Ind icator- This LED lights wh en you press th e Fn-F7

(Nu mLk) keys to toggle on th e n u meric keypad lock fu nction. When th e LED is

On, th e embedded n u meric keyboard keys generate AT-keypad chara cters an d

fu nct ions when p ressed in conjun ct ion with the Fn key.

When the NUM ind icator is Off, pres sing th e Fn key with the ap propriate k eys

provides cu rsor m ovement , pa ging an d other fun ct ions in the n orma l mode.

When the NUM indicator is On, the embedded numeric keypad becomes a

temporary nu meric keypad tha t does not require you to press an y other k ey.

SCRL (Scroll Lock) In dicator- Th is LED lights to ind icate t ha t th e keyboard islocked in the scroll mode.

3 .3 Operating Procedures

3 .3 .1 Floppy Drive Operatin g Proc edu resTo avoid damaging the floppy drive drive, and to protect data, take the following

precaut ions:

Keep th e AC ad ap ter a t leas t 6 inch es away from your drive.

Ins ert th e floppy int o the floppy drive slot with the lab el side u p a nd th e

th e flopp y clicks into p lace.

To remove a floppy, press th e eject bu tton u nt il the floppy pops ou t.

Never force open th e access sh u tter on a floppy.

Always rem ove a flopp y from th e flopp y drive before tu rn ing off th e comp u ter.

Never tra ns port t he commu ter with a floppy in th e floppy drive. Doing s o can

dam age the drive head .

If a floppy app ears to be da ma ged, try to m ak e a copy of it , an d imm ediately

discard i t .

Keep all floppies when not in u se in a disk s torage box to protect th em from

damage or loss.

3 .3 .2 Ins talling/ Rem ov ing PCMCIA Optio ns

PCMCIA cards are inserted and ejected in much the same way as diskettes:

Type I or Type II PCMCIA options may be installed in the compartment on the

left side of th e noteb ook. Type III Options ma y be in st alled on th e righ t side ofthe notebook with the Floppy Drive removed and the PCMCIA Option installed.

To ins ert a PCMCIA card , align th e card with th e socket a nd slide th e card int o

the socket until it locks into place. To install a Type III option, you must

rem ove th e Floppy Drive.

To eject a PCMCIA car d, go to th e Win dows 9 5 Con trol Pan el, select PC Ca rd

an d select the card to s top; then press th e release bu t ton an d remove the

PCMCIA option .

5 .3 Troubleshooting Procedures

The b u ilt-in s elf test p rogram an d th e disk resident diagnostics p rogram (PC-Doctor)

ar e u sefu l tools in comp u ter trou bleshooting. However, if th e compu ter h as a p ower,

keyboard or display problem, you first solve th is problem before ru n n in g

diagnostics. If th e comp u ter powers u p an d displays mess ages on th e LCD or emits

a s eries of beeps, sk ip to Paragra ph 5.4.3 for fu rth er ins tru ctions.

5 .3 .1 Troubleshooting a Power Supply Problem

If th e compu ter does n ot power u p when th e Power Switch is s et to the ON posit ion,

you most likely ha ve a ma lfu nction in th e power su bsystem (loss of power a t th e AC

Outlet, faulty AC Adapter, discharged Battery Packs, or faulty Power Supply Board).

With a p ower pr oblem, a ll LEDs a re extingu ish ed, th e LCD screen is blan k, th e

system does n ot respond when the s tan dby switch s everal t imes cons ecut ively and

no dr ive activity can be h eard . The comp u ter is u na ble to load s oftware an d

disp lays n o visible signs of activity.

To fau lt isolate a power p roblem, ch eck t h e followin g:

AC Adap ter an d Bat tery- Plu g in th e AC ada pter a nd dou ble ch eck all

connect ions on th e Adapter a nd compu ter . Ensu re tha t the NotebookPower

switch is set to the On posit ion an d th at th e system is n ot in Stan dby or s leep

lamp ) to verify tha t volta ge is p res en t. If th e volta ge is O.K., try replacing th e

AC Adapter

Check to see th at th e batter y pack is ins talled correctly (try us ing a r echa rged

computer cleaning procedures and preferred handling procedures for sensit ive

compon ents (e.g. d isk drives, b atter ies).

6 .2 Preventive Maintenance

Preventive ma int ena nce is l imited to clean ing th e plastic case, th e keyboard, a nd

the display screen.

6 .2 .1 Cleaning the Com puterWhen it is n ecessar y to clean th e plastic cas e an d keyboard, u se a s oft , lin t-free

cloth, sl ightly da mp ened with a m ild detergent s olu tion or us e the conten ts of an y

comm ercially availab le com pu ter clean ing kit .

c Caution: Neve r use alcohol, petroleum -base d solvents , or harsh dete r-gents to c lean your compu ter. Also neve r spray any l iquids direct ly on

the co mpu ter case , keyboa rd, or screen . If the l iquid-crystal display

(LCD) scree n has be come sme ared or dusty, clean the sc reen by first ap-plying a m ild glass clean er to a soft, clean , l int-free cloth, and ge ntly

w ipe the glass . Never apply l iquids direct ly on the screen su rface.

clean if necess ary.

Do not drop th e batt ery pack or su bject i t to excess ive shock a nd vibra tion.

Do not expose the ba ttery pack to direct su nlight, moistu re, or chem icalcompounds .

read y for operation. Su pplied with th e Win dows 95 system is a facility for creat ing

ba cku p diskettes of th e system s oftware. In the event of a d isk cra sh or other

problem, you can us e the Wind ows 95 S tartu p disket te to boot the u ni t and

perform troubleshooting.
