REMOTE UNDERWATER ACFM® INSPECTIONTSC’s remote inspection capability makes use of ROV’s to

either carry out the inspection, or place sub-systems that

guide the probes while the ROV stands off.

TSC develops solutions to suit the specific application, usually

based on the TSC ‘toolkit’ of remote tooling.

Remote weld inspection using ACFM® has been carried out

across a wide range of applications including:

• Structural node welds on jackets.

• Caisson inspection.

• Inspection of welded plate structures.

• Inspection of mooring systems

• including chains.

• Inspection of spud cans.

APPLICATION: 100% INSPECTION OF JACKET NODES

13

• Certain jacket nodes are subject to significant dynamic loading and are known as fatigue sensitive nodes

• Regular inspection is required in order to determine if fatigue cracks have initiated

• The complex nature of the weld means that probing with an ACFM probe requires access and dexterity beyond the range available from even the best work class ROV’s

• The solution is to use TSC’s NodeScanner™ system.

• Once placed by ROV the ROV stands back an just monitors inspection progress

• The dexterity and control of scan parameters is delivered by the NodeScanner™

CORROSION ASSESSMENT BY PULSED EDDY CURRENT (PEC)• TSC now offer subsea corrosion assessment

using the Eddyfi Lyft™ technology

• Applications include Caisson, pipe line, vessel hull, dock wall, spool corrosion erosion and subsea tanks (MOPU)

• Can assess wall thickness through substantial coating including fire retardant cladding

• Works though residual marine growth. Often no cleaning necessary, saving substantial cost

• Can be deployed alongside ACFM® using the same deployment tooling

• Identifies areas of general corrosion where advanced UT may be then be used to identify pit defects

• Resolution to 0.1mm

• Measures average wall thickness under probe

• Takes approx. 1s to take a reading, allows rapid assessment of large areas such as storage tank wall

THE PEC PROBE HOLDER

• Robust design

• Adjustable lift-off

• Standard ROV attachment with compliant joint

• Compliant joint limits load on the holder and allows correct alignment with the inspection surface

• LED indicator shows when acquisition is complete

SPOOLSCANNER™ FOR INSPECTION OF SPOOL WELDS

• Urgent requirement for weld inspection on 8 and 10 inch spools.

• Welds are protected with a 2.5mm thick poly-prop coating.

• ACFM® can inspect through the coating.

• ACFM® can be deployed from inspection class ROV.

• Scanner built to suit ROV and with neutral buoyancy.

• Circumferential scan performed in two minutes.

• System performed well up to 90m water depth and in Russian sub zero weather.

ACFM® LINEARSCANNER™

• The TSC LinearScanner™ has been developed to enable inspection of linear welds

• Scan length is Typical 200mm per placement put is adjusted per application

• Movement is by an electric motor driven lead screw

• ACFM® scan movement is well controlled with a selectable scan speed

• The ACFM® Probe is held in a compliant mount so that the probe remains in contact with the inspection surface during the scan. Forces on the probe are also minimised

• The LinearScanner™ is positioned by the T4 manipulator. Rubber feet are positioned at either side of the scan so scan line is predictable

• The LinearScanner™ can get access to areas too small to allow a crawler and can work in corners

COMPARISON – UNDERWATER PROBABILITY OF DETECTION

Independent testing confirms that ACFM® is…

• Superior to MPI for small defects

• Identical to MPI for defects over 30mm in length

• Consistently more reliable than Eddy current
