Logline: Dreaming of fame and fortune, a local Denver actor hires two indie filmmakers to come to town and make a film with him as the star. Synopsis: Being in show business is tough, but being an actor in Denver is tougher, so when performer and full-time computer repairman, Arthur Martinez, hires two indie filmmakers to make a feature film with him as the lead, he realizes he’s in over his head. “You guys have ruined my life,” Arthur says one moment immediately following with, “This is the best film I’ll ever be in.” The filmmakers scrap the genre film Arthur had intended them to make — instead quickly designing an entirely new project based around his real-life persona, which becomes more and more elusive as the production steams ahead. Once Arthur realizes what the filmmakers are up to, his protective measure is to hide behind a mask, keeping the filmmakers questioning: are any of Arthur’s moments on camera truthful or is it all just a performance in the end? Director’s Statement: The film is inspired by our shared obsession with Iranian cinema, most notably Close-Up by Abbas Kiarostami. Working from a two-page outline only, we went to great lengths to try and merge fiction and nonfiction by using a cinematic language that is so vibrant and distinct to Iranian cinema. Scenes shot with a locked off camera and slow zooms create a seamless blurring of reality. It’s often difficult to decipher what you’re actually watching, leaving the viewer wondering where the truth lies.

Director Biographies: Mike Ott studied under Thom Andersen at Cal Arts where he received his MFA degree in Film/Video. He recently completed his desert trilogy which includes the films: Littlerock, Pearblossom Hwy, and Lake Los Angeles. Mike’s films have won numerous awards, including an Audience Award at AFI Fest, a Gotham Award and an Independent Spirit Award. Nathan Silver graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2005. Since then he has written and directed five short films and six feature films, including Soft in the Head (2013), Uncertain Terms (2014), and Stinking Heaven (2015). His films have played in countless festivals around the world, including Locarno, New York, Rotterdam, Viennale, Vancouver, AFI, Torino, Munich, and BAFICI and venues including MoMA and the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.

Producer Biographies: Britta Erickson, as the Festival Director for the Denver Film Society, oversees the Denver Film Festival, Stanley Film Festival, Film on the Rocks (outdoor summer music & film series) and the Filmmaker Focus program. Britta has served on numerous film festival juries around the country including SXSW and serves on the advisory boards for SeriesFest and Mile High MFA at Regis University. Prior to joining DFS, Britta was the founding executive director of the Acoma Center, a non-profit performing arts venue in downtown Denver where she co-founded the nationally recognized Curious Theatre Company. She holds a B.A. in Communications (Broadcast Journalism) with a minor in Art History from Southern Methodist University where she also did graduate work in Art History. Britta has consulted on hundreds of film projects and produced the documentary Rolling Papers (Directed by Mitch Dickman, 2015), which was acquired by Alchemy straight from its SXSW premiere as well as the documentary, Convention (Directed by AJ Schnack, 2009), which sold to IFC Films and Sundance Channel. Katie Shapiro is the founder and principal of Katie Shapiro Media, a boutique firm specializing in publicity for films and film festivals and currently the Director of Marketing and Publicity at Aspen Film. Past clients include: The Syndrome (Directed by Meryl Goldsmith, 2014), Code Black (Directed by Ryan McGarry, 2013), Hanna Ranch (Directed by Mitch Dickman, 2012), The Lost Bird Project (Directed by Deborah Dickson, 2012), Stanley Film Festival, Denver Film Festival and Women+Film Voices Film Festival. Katie also produced the documentary Rolling Papers (Directed by Mitch Dickman, 2015), which was acquired by Alchemy after its SXSW premiere. In 2010, she co-founded the first official young patrons extension of the Denver Film Society, Reel Social Club, and sits on the DFS’ board of directors. Katie holds a B.S. in Business from Miami University and a M.A. in Journalism from University of Colorado. Patrick Hackett is a Denver-based filmmaker having written and directed numerous short films, with Slave to the Grind and Raising Republic, earning festival acceptances. A graduate of the Vancouver Film School, his films draw heavily on his Midwest upbringing, focusing on ordinary people in extraordinary situations. When he’s not working on his own projects, he works as a freelance Line Producer on both feature and short films. If Patrick isn’t on set, he’s either back at the movie theater gaining inspiration, at a local music venue listening to live music or playing the drums. Heika Burnison graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Critical Studies and Architecture. She then received her M.A. in Specialized Journalism from the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism; her Masters Thesis examined the video work of French Contemporary artist Mathilde Rosier. In addition to co-founding and serving as EP for the boutique LA sound studio White Light Audio, Heika produces a variety of film and music video projects, including the feature films California Dreams (2016), Lake Los Angeles (2015), and Pearblossom Hwy (2014).
