RENSSELAER COUNTY OFFERS HELP FOR

SENIORS TO BEAT THE HEAT

Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino outlined the stepsthe County is taking to help seniors better handle hightemperatures.“When the temperature rises to the levels predicted, takingproper precautions is vital to preventing the effects of excessiveheat,” said Jimino. “By following some simple safety measuresthe severe health problems including sunstroke, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and possibly even death that can occur will beavoided.” Jimino warned that everyone can be affected by thehigh heat, but seniors are especially vulnerable. Safety tips forhot, steamy days are being distributed to homebound seniorsin Rensselaer County and to the five county-operated seniorcenters and information has been published on the County website (www.rensco.com) in an effort to help residents cope withthe heat. These tips include such precautions as staying indoorswhen temperatures reach 90 degrees; drinking plenty of non-alcoholic liquids to remain hydrated; taking cool baths or showersand allowing the air to dry you; using fans to draw cool air intoyour home at night and keeping shades and drapes closed onwindows in direct sunlight; dressing for coolness, includingwearing loose-fitting cotton clothing that is lightweight andlight-colored; taking it easy and eating a well balanced diet.“Our senior centers always provide a wonderful place for seniorsbut on extremely hot days they can provide great place to juststop in and cool off for a bit,” said Jimino. “Seniors with orwithout air conditioning should feel free to come to the seniorcenters between nine and three o’clock Monday through Friday. Each center is air conditioned, and even if you don’t want toparticipate in the activities, you can sit and read a book or justenjoy being in a cool atmosphere.”Jimino said the senior center directors have been reaching outto the more vulnerable seniors to ensure that they are preparedfor the hot weather and to invite them to come in to the seniorcenter. Transportation is also available on a limited basis, tosign up for a ride please call your local senior center or theDepartment for Aging’s main number 518-270-2730.
