ADRIANNA MAXFIELD DONATES 12" OF

HAIR TO LOCKS OF LOVE

Adrianna Maxfield, 8 years old, daughter of Scott and NadineMaxfield, donated 12" of hair toLocks of Love for the second timeon Wednesday, October 26, 2011.Adrianna, a student at the BerlinElementary School, wanted todonate her hair to help other kids, and to honor those in her familywho have passed away. Her first haircut was in lovingmemory of her Nana, Mary E.Maxfield, who passed away due tocancer and who would havecelebrated her birthday onOctober 2 - which was the day in2008 Adrianna donated her hair.

This time, Adrianna donated her hair in memory of her cousin,Valerie A Lashway (a young mother of 3 who lost a battle withLeukemia last year on Oct. 26). After watching her cousin Veleriestruggle with cancer, lose her hair, and have to wear wigs - Adriannawas determined to donate her hair again to this cause. I find itremarkable when a kid so young fully understands where theirhair is going and what it will be used for. Unfortunately, for 8 yearold Adrianna, she has had to watch two special people in her lifepass away from cancer. Her determination and strength is truly aninspiration. It goes to show that even though we can’t do much -we can do something! This is the reason why I donate my time andpostage to send out the hair to Locks of Love. Anyone donating10" or more to this non-profit organization will receive a free haircut from me at Hair or There, Grafton, NY 279-0565.

NORMANDYI saw a ghost in the glass of a museum case

Where the earth had been stabbed one last timeBy the point of a knife, on the point of a gun

Now washed of its blood and its grimeIt stood mute in that place above Omaha Beach

As a symbol of all who had diedBy the point of a knife, or the point of a gun

On that day when America criedEphemeral lines of a form without faceTried to capture this moment in time

But the memories trapped in the glass of the caseWere all buried in soil, under lime

Hard as he tried on that Spring day in FranceThe ghost couldn’t fathom all this

Slowly he crept from the bluffs to the beachPicking rocks from the Nazis’ abyss

Turning them o’er in his hands the ghost strainedFor the stirrings of life from within

And he cried as he sensed from the reddest of themThe sad soul of a soldier therein

A soldier whose life was cut short on that beachAs the first waves of men all went down within reach

Of the scant clumps of cover that might shelter them eachFrom the fire that poured from above

The blood from his body poured into this stoneAs the German machine gun devoured flesh and boneAnd the mid-western boy died right there, all alone

Not for country, or corps, but for loveLove for his mom, and his dad, and his town

Love for the men who, like him, had gone downAnd love for the cause that had spun him around

To release the boy’s soul, like a dove“Oh, this I can grasp!” cried the ghost, as he wept

Both this rock and this death now made senseThough it took many years, many miles, many thoughts

Brought to France and translated in FrenchThe breeze it soon shifted, blowing soft from the west

And the ghost was released from his painLike the boy, he departed, nevermore to return

But the rock lives again....and again....~Dwight Jenkins
