Six years agowhen ownersSue GooldMiller and herhusband Edopened theB r o o k v i e wStation Winery,they hoped for2 things… first,that the winewould be

good... and second, that the winery would become a year-rounddestination for tourists and area residents alike.Shortly after introducing their first wine, a semi-dry apple wine“Whistle Stop White” was honored as 2007’s “Best Hudson RiverRegion Wine.” It was an amazing honor for the first BrookviewStation wine and just the boost the winery needed to keep guestscoming to its tasting room. This past year Brookview Station winesgarnered 16 more national and international wine medals. Thehighlight of the award season came in September when “WhistleStop White” was again named “Best Hudson River Region FruitWine.”Since opening in 2006, wine operations have expanded to twelvedifferent wine varieties and three varieties of wine grapes grown atthe farm. “This fall we released ‘Joe Daddy’s Hard Cider’. We havebeen asked since we opened the winery about making a hard cider.Goold Orchards is known for our fresh apple cider, so it really wasan easy decision to try a hard cider,” said Sue Goold Miller. “It’s onlyoffered at the winery and has been quite popular. This holidayseason we are offering ‘Joe Daddy’s Apple Cranberry Hard Cider’.”Brookview Station Winery is open year round and is available tohost private parties, bus groups and corporate events. It is the firststop along the Hudson Berkshire Beverage Trail. For more on the Brookview Station Winery, please visitwww.brookviewstationwinery.com

THE RENSSELAER PLATEAU ALLIANCE-

WHO IS THE RPA?

Looking over the Rensselaer Plateau from the newly openedDickenson Fire Tower in Grafton Park

The Rensselaer Plateau is a spectacular resource of about105,000 acres that includes the fifth largest forest in New YorkState and endless opportunities for recreation, tourism, commerce and traditional living. The Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA), established in 2006, isa diverse group of organizations and people who want toconserve and protect the forested character of the RensselaerPlateau and the many economic and environmental benefits itprovides. A grassroots organization, the RPA is people living inthe area who share a common interest in ensuring that futuregenerations will experience and value the many benefits of theplateau.Protecting our forests for the future means planning aheadand working together. We consider one of the best ways toaccomplish this is simply by talking with our neighbors. If we alldo our part, we can protect the plateau for our future. In thepast year, we talked with neighbors at many events includingpublic forums, landowner workshops, public displays, town boardmeetings and woods walks. Knowledge is a key tool tounderstanding that preservation and protection do not happenalone. Preservation and protection require collaboration andproactive actions. All of which are currently happening becausethe people and organizations of RPA talk with their neighbors, friends, municipalities and elected officials about this incredibleresource in our backyard and how we all play a role in protectingit. Come talk to us at one of our future events! Learn moreabout our events and regularly scheduled open meetings atwww.rensselaerplateau.org

FFA IS ONE OF THE LARGEST YOUTH

ORGANIZATIONS IN U.S.

Letter to the Editor:FFA was originally known as the Future Farmers of Americanand in 1988; the name changed to the National FFAOrganization. A group of young farmers founded FFA in 1928.These young farmers wanted to prepare future generationsfor the challenges of feeding a growing population. Theytaught members that agriculture is more than planting andharvesting—it is a science, it is a business and it is an art. FFAis now more than just farming by helping its membership todevelop and explore their future career plans, involving food, fiber, engineering, science and technology. An FFA chaptermay be chartered in any public school with an agriculturaleducation program. Today FFA is one of the largest youthorganizations in the United States, with over 540,000 membersin 7,439 chapters throughout all 50 states, Puerto Rico, andthe Virgin Islands. FFA is the largest of the career and technicalstudent organizations in US schools working in cooperationwith the U.S. Department of EducationMy friend and fellow Dairy Princess, Breana Scribner is theTreasurer for the FFA chapter at Greenwich Central SchoolDistrict. Breana and I have worked together on various DairyPrincess Events including Barbeque and Bands Family Picnic,Tour de Farm, and American Dairy Association and Dairy CouncilDistrict Meeting. To get more information about FFA go towww.ffa.org. So why do I tell you about programs that involvefarming? These programs help prepare the youth of our countryto be good stewards of the land, to take care of our animalsand learn the benefits and nutritional value of wholesomeproducts like milk. When I am involved in an event manypeople want to know how they can become involved,Organizations like FFA, The Dairy Princess Program and 4H area great way to start.~ Courtney Luskin, Rensselaer County Dairy Princess
