SLEICHER RUNNING FOR BRITTONKILL

SCHOOL BOARDI am in a 6 way race for the Brittonkill School Board. Theelection is held on May 17th at the school. My name is JimSleicher. I come from a strong business background. We havehad to make some hard business decisions these past fewyears to insure our family business future. I have spent 30plus years keeping our cost under control. These past fewyears has proven a challenge. Thanks to our budgeting weare financially secure. I would bring this wealth of experienceto the board.Brittonkill’s single largest expense is payroll. Salaries andbenefits are $15,000,000 out of a $20,000,000 budget.Salaries are 50% and 25% are benefits cost. 75% of the totalbudget is personnel. $1,000,000 is spent on busing.$1,000,000 is spent for heat, electric and insurance. Iunderstand that schools are labor intensive, but you must notburden the homeowner with more taxes.By all accounts next year is going to be worse for the district.Contributions to retirement are going up double digit again.Health costs will be increasing. Fuel is not coming down. Forthe upcoming year, the board has not realistically budgetedproper funds for fuel. They added $6000 to the new budgetover 2010-2011 expense. A 4% increase over last year. Idon’t think it will be enough when fuel has risen 40% and is stillgoing up.Let me leave you with this thought. There is a family of four. The mother lost her job. Little Susie and Johnny want thedesigner clothes that Mom and Dad have gotten for them overthe years. Now Mom has to decide if she should put food onthe table or risk her kids being mad at her for not getting those$150 sneakers. What is she to do?My answer is the food. Some parents do not see it this way.~Thank You, Jim Sleicher

JENNIE GLASSER TO RUN FOR AP BOARD

OF EDUCATIONI wanted to officially announce that I am running for a seat onthe Averill Park Board of Education.I was first elected to the Board of Education in 2000. Duringmy first term with the Board, the District faced tumultuoustimes. We saw major changes in administration, and seriousHigh School climate issues brought much negative publicity toour district. I’m proud that I was part of the positive changesthat took place as a result of these times. When the BoardPresident suddenly vacated her position, I stepped up and wasunanimously supported by the Board to be the President. Thatwas a period of time that I cherish. We were a thoughtful, proactive, effective board even though there was rarely aunanimous vote. There was respect amongst the board members, administration, staff and taxpayers that I have yet to see again. It is mystrongest desire to get back to that place where we can agreeto disagree without being disagreeable, where the needs andwants of our children are respectively balanced with what thetaxpayers can afford and where the board performs its role ofaccountability and oversight without repercussion.Since being elected again in 2008, I have showed my supportof our educational system despite forces that have opposedme for a variety of reasons. Those reasons are not importantcompared to the decisions that have been made by the majorityof this board and administration that affect us daily. Theadministration works for the Board of Education and I believethat our role, as a board, is to provide oversight to theadministration, therefore becoming the “checks and balances”that we expect from our government on any level.I believe that my experience, both in and outside of the “board”will provide a balance which is desperately needed to operatethis district for the benefit of ALL. Voting for me ensures avoice for balanced, affordable education that we can ALL beproud of! I welcome all comments, suggestions and criticisms, please contact me via email at [email protected], cellphone at 518-248-0669.
