AIR BAG WARNINGWARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all WARNINGS and SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.

DESCRIPTION & OPERATIONSupplemental Restraint System (SRS) consists of an SRS warning light, left and right front impact sensors, air bag module, clockspring, and SRS Diagnostic Unit (SDU). See Fig. 1. The air bag is designed to deploy in a frontal or near frontal impact of moderate to severe force. With ignition switch in ON position, safing impact sensor and at least one front impact sensor must activate simultaneously for air bag to deploy.

SRS WARNING LIGHT

When ignition switch is in ON or START position, SRS warning light on instrument panel will illuminate for about 7 seconds and then turn off. This indicates SDU has checked SRS and found it free of problems. If SRS warning light blinks, stays on all the time, or does not come on, a malfunction exists in SRS.

FRONT IMPACT SENSORSFront impact sensors are located under front fenders. See Figs. 1 and 8. Sensors, which verify direction and severity of impact, are inertia switches that complete an electrical circuit if impact is great enough to cause contacts to close.

AIR BAG MODULEAir bag module is mounted on front face of steering wheel. See Fig. 1. Air bag module inflator assembly produces nitrogen gas to fill air bag. When a small amount of current from SDU is applied, ignitor starts a thermal reaction, which spreads an ignitor charge. Surrounding ignitor charge is a pellet-filled area that produces nitrogen gas. Gas pressure builds and discharges from inflator through a diffuser and screen assembly, forcing steering wheel cover to burst along its seams until air bag is fully inflated. When air bag is fully inflated, gas escapes through vents, away from driver.

SRS DIAGNOSTIC UNIT (SDU)SDU is located under floor console assembly. See Figs. 1 and 4. The SDU stores fault codes and provides system information to SRS warning light and diagnostic connector. If SRS warning light comes on, a code has been stored in SDU memory. Safing impact sensor is an integral part of SDU.

DIAGNOSTIC CONNECTORDiagnostic connector is located on right side of fuse block. See Fig. 2. Diagnostic connector is used to access SRS on-board diagnostics when using Mitsubishis Multi-Use Tester (MB991341).

CLOCKSPRING

Clockspring connects air bag module to steering column wiring, forming SRS circuit. See Fig. 1. Clockspring is a flat, ribbon-like tape of conductive material that winds and unwinds when steering wheel is turned. Because of clocksprings constant movement, it is the most fragile part in the system.

SERVICINGTo ensure long-term operation of SRS, manufacturer recommends inspecting SRS system 10 years from vehicle manufacture date. See certification label on driver-side center pillar. Check the following items: SRS Warning Light Turn ignition switch to ON or START position. SRS warning light should illuminate for about 7 seconds and then turn off. This indicates SDU has checked system and found no problems. If SRS warning light fails to illuminate, stays on or flashes, a malfunction exists in SRS. See DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Air Bag Module, Steering Wheel & Clockspring 1) Remove air bag module from steering wheel. See AIR BAG MODULE &CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. DO NOT apply excessive force when disconnecting air bag module clockspring connector. 2) Check air bag module trim cover for dents, cracks or deformities. Check hooks and connectors for damage, terminals for deformities, and wiring harness for binds. Check air bag inflator case for dents, cracks or deformities. 3) Check wiring harness (built into steering wheel) and connectors for damage, and terminals for deformities. Remove clockspring. See AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. 4) Check clockspring connectors and protective tube for damage, and check terminals for deformities. Visually inspect case and gears for damage. Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position. Install and adjust clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING CENTERING under ADJUSTMENTS. 5) Install steering wheel, column covers and air bag module. Check steering wheel for noise, binds, difficult operation, or excessive free play. 6) Check all connectors for poor connections. Check wiring harness for binds, connectors for damage, and terminals for deformities. Replace connectors or wiring harness as required. Impact Sensors Remove right and left splash shields. Check sensors to ensure arrow marks face front of vehicle. Check upper frame and sensor brackets for deformities or rust. Check sensors for dents, cracks and rust. Check sensor harness for binds, connectors for damage, and terminals for deformities. Replace sensor and/or sensor harness as required. SRS Diagnostic Unit (SDU) Check SDU case and brackets for dents, cracks or deformities. Check connectors and lock lever for damage, and terminals for deformities. Replace SDU as required.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECKWARNING: After any repair, always turn ignition on from passenger side of vehicle in case of accidental air bag deployment.

Turn ignition switch to ON or START position. SRS warning light on instrument panel should illuminate for approximately 7 seconds then turn off. This indicates SRS is functioning properly. If any of the following conditions exist, SRS is malfunctioning and needs repair. * * * SRS warning light does not illuminate as described. SRS warning light stays on for more than 7 seconds. SRS warning light illuminates while driving.

If SRS warning light does not illuminate as described, SRS system is malfunctioning. See DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONSwith SRS: * The following precautions should be observed when working

Disable SRS before servicing any SRS or steering column component. Failure to do this may result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Wait at least 30 SECONDS after disabling air bag system. SRS system retains enough voltage, for a short time after system is disabled, to deploy air bag. After repairs, always turn ignition on from passenger-side of vehicle in case of accidental air bag deployment. Ensure SRS warning light is working properly and no system faults are indicated. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK. Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling an air bag. The SDU must be stored in its original special container until used for service. It must be stored in a clean, dry place, away from sources of extreme heat, sparks and high electrical energy. DO NOT expose air bag module and clockspring to temperatures greater than 200 F (93 C). When placing a live air bag module on a bench or other surface, always face air bag module and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if air bag accidentally deploys. After air bag deploys, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, which irritates skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during cleanup. Wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow correct clean-up and disposal procedures. See DISPOSAL PROCEDURES. Because of critical system operating requirements, DO NOT service any SRS components. Repairs are only made by replacing defective part(s). DO NOT allow any electrical source near inflator on the back of air bag module. When carrying live air bag module, trim cover should be pointed away from body to minimize injury in case of accidental air bag deployment. When testing voltage or continuity at SDU, use terminal side (not the wire end) of connector. DO NOT probe a wire through insulator, as this will damage it and eventually cause failure due to corrosion. When performing electrical tests, prevent accidental shorting of terminals. Such shorts can damage fuses or components, and may cause a second fault code to set, making diagnosis of

original problem more difficult. Never use an analog volt-ohmmeter or test light in place of a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM). When performing DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES, use a DVOM with a maximum test current of 2 mA (milliamps) at minimum range of resistance measurement. Also see SPECIAL TOOLS. If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, DO NOT drive vehicle until system is repaired and is fully functional. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components, or in any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS is not functional, park vehicle until repairs are made.

SPECIAL TOOLSTo avoid air bag deployment when working on SRS, DO NOT use electrical test equipment such as test lights, battery or A/C-powered volt/ohmmeter, or any type of electrical equipment other than those specified by manufacturer. See SRS RECOMMENDED TOOLS table. SRS RECOMMENDED TOOLS TABLE Tool Name

(2) - ROM Pack is used with multi-use tester.

WARNING: Wait about 60 seconds after disconnecting negative battery cable before servicing SRS. System voltage is maintained for about 60 seconds after battery is disconnected. Failure to wait 60 seconds before servicing system may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. To disable system, turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Shield cable end. To activate system, reconnect negative battery cable.

WARNING: Undeployed air bag must be deployed before disposal. Disposing of an undeployed air bag may violate federal, state or local laws. This also applies to vehicles that are to be scrapped. Never sell a used air bag module.

WARNING: Vehicle interior will contain sodium hydroxide powder, a by-product of air bag deployment. Since this powder can irritate skin, eyes, nose and throat, wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during clean-up. 1) Begin clean-up by putting tape over air bag exhaust vent,

so no additional powder escapes into vehicle interior. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any residual powder from A/C-heater outlets and vehicle interior. 2) Turn blower motor to low for a few minutes and exit vehicle. Turn blower motor off. Vacuum any other powder expelled from plenum. Vacuum interior a second time to recover all powder. Avoid kneeling or sitting on unclean areas. Dispose air bag as you would any other part.

UNDEPLOYED AIR BAGWARNING: Deploy air bag outdoors and away from people. Air bag deployment makes a loud noise. NEVER deploy air bag module with trim cover face down. NOTE: If replacing a deployed air bag, SDU must also be replaced.

If vehicle is to be scrapped, perform PROCEDURE 1: ON-VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT. If vehicle will continue to be operated, perform PROCEDURE 2: OFF-VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT. If a problem in electrical system prevents deployment of air bag while installed in vehicle, use PROCEDURE 2. Procedure 1: On-Vehicle Deployment This procedure assumes air bag wiring is intact, SRS warning light indicates no fault codes, initial system operation check is okay (see SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK), and vehicles battery is still in place (or one is provided for testing). 1) Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. 2) Open all doors and windows. Move vehicle to an isolated area. Remove battery. Remove floor console assembly. See Fig. 4. Using a screwdriver, push inward on SRS Diagnostic Unit (SDU) lock spring to unlock wiring connector lock lever. See Fig. 3. 3) Disconnect clockspring 2-pin Red connector from SDU while pressing down lock on connector. Make a harness with two 20-foot (or longer) wires. Connect one end of each 20-foot wire to clockspring connector terminals. Connect remaining ends of 20-foot wires together. This prevents unexpected air bag deployment. 4) Lead 20-foot wires outside vehicle, as far away as possible from vehicle. Ensure there are no loose parts in passenger compartment, and no one is within 20 feet of vehicle. 5) Connect ends of 20-foot wires to terminals of a 12-volt battery to deploy air bag module. After deployment, allow air bag module to cool and dust to settle for at least 30 minutes before approaching vehicle. If air bag fails to deploy, go to PROCEDURE 2.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. 2) Remove battery. Connect 2 wires about 20 feet long to the 2 leads of air bag module connector. Connect other end of 20-foot wires together. This will prevent unexpected air bag deployment. 3) Place air bag module face (trim cover) up and move 20 feet away. Connect ends of 20-foot wires to terminals of a 12-volt battery. After air bag module deploys, let it cool off and allow dust to settle for at least 30 minutes before approaching. Tightly seal deployed air bag module in a strong vinyl bag and dispose of air bag as you would any other part.

POST-COLLISION INSPECTIONProper operation of SRS requires that any repairs to vehicle structure return it to its original production configuration. If air bag deployed in collision, complete SRS system must be replaced. Additionally, manufacturer recommends replacing steering wheel, steering column and intermediate joint. If air bag did not deploy in a low-speed collision, perform the following inspection. After repairs, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK to ensure SRS is functioning properly. Impact Sensors Remove right and left splash shields. Check sensors to ensure arrow marks face front of vehicle. Check upper frame and sensor brackets for deformities or rust. Check sensors for dents, cracks and rust. Check sensor harness for binds, connectors for damage, and terminals for deformities. Replace sensor and/or sensor harness as required. SRS Diagnostic Unit (SDU) Check SDU case and brackets for dents, cracks or deformities. Check connectors and lock lever for damage, and terminals for deformities. Replace SDU as required. Air Bag Module, Steering Wheel & Clockspring 1) Remove air bag module from steering wheel. See AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. DO NOT apply excessive force when disconnecting air bag module clockspring connector. 2) Check air bag module trim cover for dents, cracks or deformities. Check hooks and connectors for damage, terminals for deformities, and wiring harness for binds. Check air bag inflator case for dents, cracks or deformities. 3) Check wiring harness (built into steering wheel) and connectors for damage, and terminals for deformities. Remove clockspring. See AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. 4) Check clockspring connectors and protective tube for damage, and terminals for deformities. Visually inspect case and gears for damage. Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position. Install and adjust clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING CENTERING under ADJUSTMENTS. 5) Install steering wheel, column covers and air bag module. Check steering wheel for noise, binds, difficult operation, or excessive free play. 6) Check all connectors for poor connections. Check wiring harness for binds, connectors for damage, and terminals for deformities. Replace connectors or wiring harness as required.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNING: Follow air bag service precautions to prevent accidental air bag deployment and personal injury. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. CAUTION: Replace faulty SRS components; DO NOT repair or disassemble. Handle all SRS components carefully. Replace components that are dented, cracked, deformed or rusted, or after air bag has deployed. After component replacement, check system to ensure proper operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.

NOTE:

AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRINGNOTE: If replacing a deployed air bag module, SDU must also be replaced.

Removal & Installation 1) Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. 2) Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position and steering wheel is locked. Remove air bag module mounting nuts. Using a screwdriver, unlock air bag module connector and carefully pry clockspring connector from back of air bag module. See Fig. 5.

assembly. Remove horn contact plate. Remove horn buttons and spring. See Fig. 6. 4) Using steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel from vehicle. Using both hands, press lower column cover inward and down. Remove lower column cover to access clockspring wiring harness. Disconnect clockspring from body harness connector. CAUTION: SDU connector is a double-locking mechanism. DO NOT use excessive force when disconnecting connector.

5) Remove floor console assembly to gain access to SDU. See Fig. 4. Using a screwdriver, press lock spring of lock lever on SDU to disconnect connector. See Fig. 3. 6) Press down on connector lock on Red 2-pin connector. Disconnect SDU Red 2-pin connector. Remove clockspring mounting screws. Remove clockspring from vehicle. WARNING: If clockspring mating mark is not properly aligned, steering wheel may not turn completely, or flat cable inside clockspring may be severed, disabling SRS system and possibly causing serious injury to driver. 7) To install, reverse removal procedure. Before installing clockspring, ensure clockspring mating mark is properly aligned. See ADJUSTMENTS. Before installing air bag module, ensure horn switch wires are properly positioned. See Fig. 7. Tighten steering wheel and air bag module nuts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at the end of this article. After air bag module and clockspring are installed, check SRS warning light to ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.

FRONT IMPACT SENSORSRemoval & Installation 1) If replacing a deployed air bag, both front impact sensors must be replaced. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. 2) Front impact sensors are located inside front fenders. See Figs. 1 and 8. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition off. 3) Remove left or right splash shield. Remove front impact sensor mounting bolts. Remove wiring harness from front impact sensor clip. Disconnect electrical connector. Remove front impact sensor from vehicle. 4) To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure arrow on front impact sensor is facing front of vehicle. Tighten front impact sensor bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at the end of this article. After front impact sensors are installed, check SRS warning light to ensure system is functioning properly. see SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.

SRS DIAGNOSTIC UNIT (SDU)CAUTION: SDU connector is a double-locking mechanism. DO NOT use

excessive force when disconnecting connector. Removal & Installation 1) If replacing a deployed air bag, SDU must also be replaced. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. 2) Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition off. 3) Remove floor console assembly. See Fig. 4. Using a screwdriver, press lock spring of lock lever on SDU to disconnect connector. See Fig. 3. 4) Press down lock of each connector on SDU. Disconnect all connectors from SDU. Remove SDU mounting bolts. Remove SDU. 5) To install, reverse removal procedure. After SDU is installed, check SRS warning light to ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.

ADJUSTMENTS CLOCKSPRING CENTERINGWARNING: If clockspring mating mark is not properly aligned, steering wheel may not turn completely, or flat cable inside clockspring may be severed, disabling SRS system and possibly causing serious injury to driver. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Visually inspect case and gears for obvious signs of damage. Align NEUTRAL mark with mating mark on clockspring assembly. See Fig. 9.

WIRE REPAIR

DO NOT repair SRS wiring or harness connectors. If SRS wiring or harness connectors are faulty, replace faulty wiring harness.

DIAGNOSIS & TESTINGWARNING: Follow air bag service precautions to prevent accidental air bag deployment and personal injury. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. NOTE: After component replacement, check system to ensure proper operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURESNOTE: The following diagnostic procedures are designed for use with Multi-Use Tester (MB991341). Although other readout boxes are available, manufacturer recommends using Multi-Use Tester (MB991341) to access SRS on-board diagnostics. Also, see SPECIAL TOOLS under SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. After repairing SRS, activate air bag system. If necessary, erase diagnostic codes from multi-use tester memory. Check SRS warning light operation to verify proper system function. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.

NOTE:

Initial SRS Diagnostic Procedure 1) Check SRS fuses No. 11, 12 and 18. Fuse block is located near left kick panel. See Fig. 10. Replace as required. After checking fuses, start engine. 2) If SRS warning light illuminates for 7 seconds then turns off, SRS is functioning properly. If SRS light does not illuminate for 7 seconds and then turn off, go to next step. NOTE: If battery voltage drops, SRS warning light will come on. SRS warning light will go out after battery voltage is restored to normal.

3) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Insert Read Only Memory (ROM) Pack (MB991423) into Multi-Use Tester (MB991341). Connect Multi-Use Tester to diagnostic connector. See Fig. 2. To start SRS diagnosis, perform TEST 1, SRS WARNING LIGHT DOES NOT TURN OFF or TEST 2, SRS WARNING LIGHT DOES NOT ILLUMINATE depending on SRS warning light condition. Test 1, SRS Warning Light Does Not Turn Off 1) Using multi-use tester, read and write down displayed codes and service data (fault duration and how many times memories are erased). NOTE: If multi-use tester displays CANT COMM, check for poor connections at multi-use tester and diagnostic connector (vehicle side) and go to TEST 3, NO COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MULTI-USE TESTER & SDU. Codes remain stored for no more than about 7 days. Codes can be stored no more than 250 times.

2) Erase diagnostic codes following multi-use tester messages. Start engine. If SRS warning light illuminates for about 7 seconds then turns off for at least 45 seconds, SRS is functioning properly. 3) If SRS warning light does not function as described, check diagnostic codes recorded in step 1). Refer to SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

CODE REFERENCE CHART and perform service indicated. See Fig. 11.

NOTE: If multi-use tester displays CANT COMM, check for poor connections at multi-use tester and diagnostic connector (vehicle side) and go to TEST 3, NO COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MULTI-USE TESTER & SDU. Codes remain stored for no more than about 7 days. Codes can be stored, cleared and stored again no more than 250 times.

2) Check diagnostic codes recorded in step 1). Refer to SELFDIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CODE REFERENCE CHART and perform service indicated. See Fig. 11. CAUTION: SDU connector is a double-locking mechanism. DO NOT use excessive force when disconnecting connector.

Test 3, No Communication Between Multi-Use Tester & SDU 1) Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove floor console assembly. Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. See Fig. 3. 2) While pressing down on lock connector, disconnect SDU Red 14-pin connector. Connect SDU Red 14-pin connector to SRS Check Harness (MB991349) connector No. 3. See Figs. 12 and 13. 3) Using digital ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminal No. 9 of SRS check harness connector No. 5 and diagnostic connector terminal No. 8. See Figs. 2 and 12. 4) If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check for disconnected or damaged body wiring harness between SDU and diagnostic connector. Repair as required. 5) Check for continuity between ground and terminals No. 13 and 14 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. See Fig. 12. If continuity does not exist, replace malfunctioning SDU. If continuity exists, harness between SRS warning light and SDU is shorted. Replace body wiring harness at location of short. NOTE: After repairing SRS, activate air bag system. If necessary, erase diagnostic codes from multi-use tester memory. Check SRS warning light operation to verify proper system function. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.

Test 4, No Communication Between Multi-Use Tester & SDU 1) Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove floor console assembly. 2) Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. See Fig. 3. Disconnect SDU Red 14-pin connector while pushing down on connector lock. 3) Connect harness side of disconnected SDU Red 14-pin connector to SRS check harness connector No. 3. See Figs. 12 and 13. 4) Using digital volt-ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals No. 19 and No. 20 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. See Fig. 12. 5) If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, ground circuit is open. Replace wiring harness. 6) Activate SRS. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check for battery voltage between terminal No. 11 and terminals No. 19 and 20 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. See Fig. 12. If battery voltage exists, go to step 8). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. 7) Check for damaged or disconnected ignition power supply circuit (fuse No. 18). See Fig. 10. If circuit requires repair, disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. 8) Check for battery voltage between terminal No. 12 and terminals No. 19 and 20 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. See Fig. 12. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, replace malfunctioning SDU. Disable SRS before performing repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. 9) Check for damaged or disconnected ignition power supply circuit (fuse No. 12). See Fig. 10. If circuit requires repair, disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.

NOTE:

After repairing SRS, activate air bag system. If necessary, erase diagnostic codes from multi-use tester memory. Check SRS warning light operation to verify proper system function. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK. SDU connector is a double-locking mechanism. DO NOT use excessive force when disconnecting connector.

CAUTION:

Test 5, Repairing Fault Codes 11, 12 & 13 1) Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove floor console assembly. 2) Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. See Fig. 3. Disconnect Red 14-pin connector and Blue and Yellow 2-pin connectors from SDU. Connect Blue and Yellow 2-pin connectors to SRS check harness connector No. 3. See Fig. 12. 3) Using digital ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 3 and 4 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. See Fig. 12. If resistance is 1960-2040 ohms, go to step 5). If resistance is not 1960-2040 ohms, go to next step. 4) Disconnect left front impact sensor connector. Check resistance between connector terminals of left front impact sensor. If resistance is not 1960-2040 ohms, replace left front impact sensor. If resistance is 1960-2040 ohms, sensor wiring harness is shorted or open. Replace sensor wiring harness. 5) Check resistance between terminals No. 5 and 6 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. See Fig. 12. If resistance is 1960-2040 ohms, go to step 7). If resistance is not 1960-2040 ohms, go to next step. 6) Disconnect right front impact sensor connector. Check resistance between connector terminals of right front impact sensor. If resistance is not 1960-2040 ohms, replace right front impact sensor. If resistance is 1960-2040 ohms, sensor wiring harness is shorted or open. Replace sensor wiring harness. 7) Disconnect Red 2-pin clockspring connector from SDU. See Fig. 13. Connect SRS check harness connector No. 1 (Red 2-pin connector) to SDU in place of disconnected Red 2-pin clockspring connector. See Fig. 12. 8) Reconnect Blue and Yellow 2-pin connectors to SDU and double lock them. Activate SRS. Turn ignition on. Erase codes from multi-use tester memory. 9) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then to ON position. If SRS warning light operation is normal, go to next step. If SRS warning light is not normal, replace malfunctioning SDU. Disable SRS before performing repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. 10) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. See Fig. 3. 11) Disconnect SRS check harness Red 2-pin connector from SDU while pressing down connector lock. Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. 12) Connect clockspring connector No. 2 to SRS check harness connector No. 4, aligning White paint mark on SRS check harness connector No. 4 with hollow portion of clockspring connector No. 2. See Figs. 12 and 14. Connect clockspring connector No. 7 to SRS check harness connector No. 3. WARNING: Never attempt to measure circuit resistance of air bag module (squib), even if using specified tester. If circuit resistance is measured, it may cause accidental air bag deployment and personal injury.

13) Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 1 and 21, and terminals No. 2 and 22 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. See Fig. 12. 14) If resistance is .4 ohm or more, replace malfunctioning clockspring. If resistance is less than .4 ohm, replace malfunctioning air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

DO NOT use excessive force when disconnecting connector. Test 6, Repairing Fault Codes 21 Or 22 1) If all other diagnostic code tests are complete, go to next step. If other diagnostic code tests are not complete, perform other diagnostic code tests before proceeding with this test. 2) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove floor console assembly. 3) Push in the lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. See Fig. 3. Disconnect SDU Red 14-pin connector while pressing

down on connector lock. 4) Disconnect Red 2-pin clockspring connector from SDU. See Fig. 13. Connect SRS check harness connector No. 1 to SDU where Red 2pin clockspring connector was connected. See Fig. 12. Double lock the connector. 5) Activate SRS. Turn ignition on. Erase codes from multi-use tester memory. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then turn it back to ON position. If SRS warning light operation is normal, go to next step. If SRS warning light is not normal, replace malfunctioning SDU. Disable SRS before performing repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. 6) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. See Fig. 3. 7) Disconnect SRS check harness Red 2-pin connector from SDU while pressing down connector lock. Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. 8) Connect clockspring connector No. 2 to SRS check harness connector No. 4, aligning White paint mark on SRS check harness connector No. 4 with hollow portion of clockspring connector No. 2. See Figs. 12 and 14. Connect clockspring connector No. 7 to SRS check harness connector No. 3. WARNING: Never attempt to measure circuit resistance of air bag module (squib), even if you are using specified tester. If circuit resistance is measured, it may cause accidental air bag deployment and personal injury. 9) Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 1 and 21, and terminals No. 2 and 22 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. See Fig. 12. 10) If resistance is .4 ohm or more, replace malfunctioning clockspring. If resistance is less than .4 ohm, replace malfunctioning air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. CAUTION: SDU connector is a double-locking mechanism. DO NOT use excessive force when disconnecting connector.

Test 7, Repairing Fault Code 33 1) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. 2) Remove floor console assembly. Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. See Fig. 3. Disconnect SDU Red 14-pin connector while pressing down on lock of connector. 3) Connect disconnected SDU Red 14-pin connector (harness side) to SRS check harness connector No. 3. See Figs. 12 and 13. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between ground and terminals No. 19 and 20 of SRS check connector No. 5. 4) If ohmmeter does not indicate continuity, an open exists in ground circuit. Replace wiring harness. If ohmmeter indicates continuity, activate SRS, turn ignition on and go to next step. 5) At SRS check harness connector No. 5, check voltage between terminal No. 10 and terminals No. 19 and 20. See Fig. 12. If voltmeter does not indicate battery voltage, replace malfunctioning SDU. 6) If voltmeter indicates battery voltage, check for short in wiring harness for power source circuit and cranking signal detection circuit. Disable SRS before performing repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. NOTE: After repairing SRS, activate air bag system. If necessary, erase diagnostic codes from multi-use tester memory. Check

SRS warning light operation to verify proper system function. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK. Test 8, Repairing Fault Code 34 1) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove floor console. 2) Ensure SDU lock lever is securely locked. If lock lever is not securely locked, securely reconnect all 4 SDU connectors. If SDU connectors are securely locked, replace malfunctioning SDU. Disable SRS system before performing repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. NOTE: After repairing SRS, activate air bag system. If necessary, erase diagnostic codes from multi-use tester memory. Check SRS warning light operation to verify proper system function. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK. SDU connector is a double-locking mechanism. DO NOT use excessive force when disconnecting connector.

CAUTION:

Test 9, Repairing Fault Code 41 1) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove floor console assembly. 2) Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. Disconnect SDU Red 14-pin connector while pressing down on connector lock. 3) Connect disconnected SDU Red 14-pin connector (harness side) to SRS check harness connector No. 3. See Fig. 12. Check for continuity between ground and terminals No. 19 and 20 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. 4) If continuity does not exist, repair ground connection or replace wiring harness. If continuity exists, reconnect negative battery cable, turn ignition on and go to next step. 5) At SRS check harness connector No. 5, check voltage between terminal No. 12 and terminals No. 19 and 20. See Fig. 12. If voltage is not 9 volts or more, repair circuit between fuse No. 12 instrument cluster. See Fig. 10. 6) If voltage is at least 9 volts, replace malfunctioning SDU. Disable SRS before performing repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. NOTE: After repairing SRS, activate air bag system. If necessary, erase diagnostic codes from multi-use tester memory. Check SRS warning light operation to verify proper system function. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK. SDU connector is a double-locking mechanism. DO NOT use excessive force when disconnecting connector.

CAUTION:

Test 10, Repairing Fault Code 42 1) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove floor console assembly. 2) Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. Disconnect SDU Red 14-pin connector while pressing down on connector lock. 3) Connect disconnected SDU Red 14-pin connector (harness side) to SRS check harness connector No. 3. See Fig. 12. Check for continuity between ground and terminals No. 19 and 20 of SRS check harness connector No. 5. 4) If continuity does not exist, repair ground connection or replace wiring harness. If continuity exists, reconnect negative battery cable, turn ignition on and go to next step. 5) At SRS check harness connector No. 5, check voltage

between terminal No. 11 and terminals No. 19 and 20. See Fig. 12. If voltage is not 9 volts or more, repair circuit between fuse No. 18 instrument cluster. See Fig. 10. 6) If voltage is at least 9 volts, replace malfunctioning SDU. Disable SRS before performing repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Test 11, Repairing Fault Code 43 1) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove floor console assembly. 2) Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. See Fig. 3. Disconnect SDU Red 14-pin connector while pressing down on lock of connector. Activate SRS. Turn ignition on. 3) If SRS warning light stays on with SDU Red 14-pin connector disconnected, repair or replace grounded wiring harness between SRS warning light and SDU. If SRS warning light does not stay lit, replace malfunctioning SDU. Disable SRS before performing repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. NOTE: After repairing SRS, activate air bag system. If necessary, erase diagnostic codes from multi-use tester memory. Check SRS warning light operation to verify proper system function. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK. SDU connector is a double-locking mechanism. DO NOT use excessive force when disconnecting connector.

CAUTION:

Test 12, Repairing Fault Code 43 1) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable SRS. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove floor console assembly. 2) Push in lock spring of SDU lock lever to unlock lock lever. Disconnect SDU Red 14-pin connector while pressing down on connector lock. Connect disconnected SDU Red 14-pin connector (harness side) to SRS check harness connector No. 3. See Figs. 12 and 13. 3) At SRS check harness connector No. 5, check for continuity between ground and terminals No. 19 and 20. If continuity does not exist, repair poor ground connection or replace wiring harness. If continuity exists, activate SRS, turn ignition on and go to next step. 4) At SRS check harness connector No. 5, check voltage between terminals No. 19 and 20, and terminals No. 13 and 14. See Fig. 12. If battery voltage exists, replace malfunctioning SDU. 5) If battery voltage does not exist, check for faulty SRS warning light bulb or damaged wiring harness. Disable SRS before performing repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. NOTE: After repairing SRS, activate air bag system. Erase diagnostic codes from multi-use tester memory. Check SRS warning light operation to verify system functions properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.
