Belles ring in a century of fashionCentennial Belles’ reputation spreads as models bring life to our city’s past

If you see a woman in period clothing walking around an event in the Alberni
Valley, chances are she is with the Centennial Belles.
The Belles began in 2012 for Port Alberni’s centennial; historian Meg Scoffield approached Tricia Knight to put something together to celebrate. Knight recalled at Niagara-on-the-Lake there were people dressed up in period costume, and suggested that would be a good idea for Port Alberni.
An information meeting attracted 46 people interested in helping out. “I was telling everyone if you want to participate, with a long, black skirt and a high-necked blouse you’re probably ready to go. Everyone showed up in long black skirts,” she said.
“There was a lot of enthusiasm. We did 57 events that year. We were in four parades, we did four full fashion shows. We were kept very busy.”
At the end of the centennial, those who didn’t want to be involved beyond the year went their own way, but a core of about 12 people remained. The group has grown from simple black skirts and hats to having costumes covering the last century and a half.
Knight continues to run the Belles along with Linda Phillips and the core group, and they put on at least one local fashion show a year and many other events such as Red Hat Society showings, Rollin Art Centre fundraising events, and even a 1950s show at McLean Mill in honour of the Franklin River anniversary last year.
Knight is well-suited to running the Belles: “I have a passion for the past,” she said.
Her background is in theatre, and she took courses on Victorian and Edwardian fashion. “It’s very difficult to get into
theatre without getting interested in fashion. When you’re directing a Victorian show, you have to know how they moved, what restricted them, etc.”
Armed with her theatre knowledge, love for genealogy and a teaching background, Knight ensures the Centennial
Belles’ fashion shows educate people about the fashions too. Last year they hosted a fashion show with wedding dresses that included a slide show featuring the original brides in the dresses on their wedding days, models on the runway in the dresses—
and in some cases, the brides were also in attendance.
Her favourite era is Edwardian—known as La Belle Époque, or Beautiful Era— stretching from 1871 to 1914. “I used to hate the 1920s but since Downtown Abbey and we did the ‘20s fashion show last year, I
would say I like that era.”The Belles continue to
put on their own fashion shows, but they have also been invited to other communities.
In 2013 Holland America hired them to go to Victoria and meet the Westerdam cruise ship, where they greeted people
on the dock in period clothing “in a 90-kilometre-an-hour gale,” Knight said.
They then went on board and changed into Titanic-era evening wear and paraded down the Westerdam’s winding staircase.
“We got some really good responses. It was really well received,” said Knight.
The same year they were also invited to help Port Coquitlam celebrate its centennial. “We made a whole fashion show of 1913 tea dresses and suits.”
While in Port Coquitlam six members of the Belles did a lot of thrift store shopping, picking up outfits to be modified and vintage fabrics.
They look for old drapery fabric because they need the heavy fabric for some of the older outfits.
All the costumes from 1912–14 have been handmade using examples, photographs or patterns of outfits.
“We take great care to replicate them properly,” Knight said.
“We’ve been fortunate in having some wonderful donations. The last show we had some gorgeous wedding dresses donated.”When they were in Parksville last year a woman approached Knightwith a dress bag and handed her an authentic 1920s hand-beaded dress from Paris. “She said ‘I’ve got this dress.’ She had it hanging in her closet for 50 years.”
Another benefactor has donated a 1920s cape worn by a prima ballerina from the New York and Bolshoi ballet companies.

Can merely ‘tiptoeing thru the tulips’
change a person’s mood or state of mind
and in a way that allows this mood to linger all day?
Common sense would say that flowers do make people happy. Interestingly enough, three 10-month research studies completed in
2003, 2005 and 2006 at the universities in Texas (A & M), New Jersey (Rutgers) and Massachusetts (Harvard), showed that not only do flowers make people happier than we know; they have strong,
positive effects to emotional well-being.
Results?Flowers DO have
an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed ‘true’ or ‘excited’ smiles upon receiving flowers and expressed extraordinary delight. This kind of smile has a name, the Duchenne smile. This reaction was universal and occurred in all age groups.
Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious or restless after receiving flowers. The actions that followed were consistent with
having a higher sense of enjoyment and satisfaction with life in general.
Flowers assist in making intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased communications with family and friends. Flower givers were perceived as successful and caring, enhancing friendships, romances and business relationships by giving flowers.
Flowers feed compassion for others. Study participants who lived with flowers for less than a week felt an increase in feeling of compassion for others.
Flower power
boosts are heart-felt. REALLY! Participants who most frequently placed flowers in their kitchens, dining or living rooms reported wanting to see the blooms first thing in the morning. The study also found that when people started their day in the presence of flowers, they were more likely to transfer their happier feelings to others.
Flower power lingers through the day. The study found that people are more likely to feel happier, have more enthusiasm and energy at work when flowers are present in their homes.
Flowers and plants in the workplace
promote, creativity, innovation and problem-solving skills.
Some people may say these studies are just theories and ask, “is this really true in practice?”
So I am challenging you to do some real life research of your own.
Purchase a bundle of flowers, visit a care facility for the elderly and give away the flowers one by one.
Anonymously leave flowers for a neighbour, friend or loved one.
Keep flowers in your home on a consistent basis. Plant a pot of flowers for the outside and place it where people in the neighbourhood can see. Encourage your neighbours to do the same. Perhaps give a pot of outdoor flowers away.
Then, step back and watch; the reactions will be unforgettable.

‘Flower power’ a heartfelt harbinger of spring

The City of Port Alberni is looking at increasing security at the Klitsa ball fields fieldhouse after it had its locks glued for the second year in a row, city facilities operations supervisor Mark Zenko said.
“We’re looking at
beefing up security.”“We’re frustrated,”
said Vicky Seredick, president of the Alberni Valley Junior Baseball Association. “It’s not a good thing when you come here at five o’clock and you’ve got the parents and kids waiting and you’re greeted with this it’s a little... it’s just senseless vandalism is what it is.”
It’s also expensive, Zenko said.
“It is city property
and we all our taxes and this is an unfortunate way to have to spend tax money.”
The glue used by the perpetrators last spring was too strong to be dissolved, leading the city to have to call a locksmith to replace parts of the lock.
The cost to taxpayers was over $1000 for the six locks that had to be fixed.
“They only did two this time, last year
they did the whole building. They locked the whole building tight.,” Zenko said. The cost to replace the two lock cylinders this year will be approximately $400, he added.

Cook family gives backto Athletic Hall Association
The Cook family, headed by Huu-ay-aht First Nation Chief councillor Jeff Cook, have made a large donation for the second year in a row to the Alberni Athletic Hall Association.
The Cook family started their fundraisers last year as a way to give back to the Athletic Hall, because so many family members have benefited from programs at the hall.
The Cook family held two separate fundraisers in the winter. The Westwind Pub beer and burger night and the vacation raffle—which featured a trip for four to Disneyland and a Vancouver Canucks’ game package, sponsored by Huu-ay-aht Group of Business and Probyn Log Ltd.—both raised a total of $3,900.
“The Cook family has three generations of members who have accessed the Athletic Hall Facility in the many years of its existence,” Jeff Cook said.
“We are very grateful for
the continued dedication of the Athletic Hall members and directors for all the time they put in volunteering to keep the community healthy and active.
“There have been countless Nuu-chah-nulth and Alberni Valley youth using the facility for sports and numerous Nuu-chah-nulth families experiencing cultural activities there as well.
This support of our youth and community gives us purpose to give back.”
The Cook family’s two-year total for donations is $6,500. Last year’s donation helped cover the final costs for the elevator lift, making the facility fully wheelchair accessible.
This year’s donation will go into general operating funds, and will help with the Athletic Hall
Association’s next project, a grateful association president Larry Spencer said.
The association hopes to erect a sign on Roger Street, about the same size as the one in front of Alberni District Secondary School, announcing events happening at the hall.
Meanwhile, the Cook family is already planning it spring fundraising.

HMCS Alberni secrets revealed
The Port Alberni Maritime Heritage Society and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 293 are teaming up to bring the next Maritime Heritage Night to the Valley on Thursday, March 26 from 7–10 p.m. This month’s talk will be on The Alberni Project, with executive director Lewis Bartholemew.
HMCS Alberni was a Second World War Flower Class corvette built at Yarrows Ltd shipyard in Esquimalt in 1941. She was named, like all the corvettes, after a Canadian small city to encourage support from ordinary Canadians.
In August 1944 she was torpedoed and sank with the loss of 59 of her 90 crewmen.
Local artist Doug Harrison recently donated his painting of the Alberni to be displayed at the PAMHS Maritime Discovery Centre. This
gift encouraged PAMHS to co-sponsor this presentation about the ship.
Lewis Bartholemew founded The Alberni Project after seeing a painting of the corvette on the BC Ferry Queen of Alberni. He now runs a permanent museum in Comox dedicated to the ship. He will bring his mobile display of artifacts to this presentation.
Bartholemew will tell many tales about the ship, its crew and his work at The Alberni Project.
There are many stories in Port Alberni about our relationship with this corvette. A flag from the ship is proudly displayed in the Legion Hall. Bartholemew has some information about the city’s relationship with the vessel, and is encouraging anyone else with artifacts or stories to come and share them.
The event takes place at the Legion, 4680 Victoria Quay, from 7–10 p.m. Admission is by donation which can be applied to membership in PAMHS.

A new media star named Hulk has been
appearing on popular talk shows in New York and inspiring such headlines as ABC’s “175-Pound Pit Bull Shatters Misconceptions About the Breed.” This 18-month-old pup is a beautiful animal, but his owners do not deserve all this free publicity for their questionable attack training and unethical breeding practices.
As I watched them take the stage on The View last Thursday to reenact the viral video of Hulk howling alongside their adorable three-year-old son playing the harmonica, I waited to hear the tough questions. But there were only two, and they weren’t tough.
“You’re not afraid of letting your little boy play with this big ol’ dog?” Whoopi Goldberg asked. “I mean, this is his best buddy, right?”
“Oh yeah, absolutely,” Marlon Grennan said. “They’re the best of friends you know. Just take a look at him. He’s mellow, he soaks up the crowd, he’s a great guy. With dogs it’s always about proper ownership and leadership. Strong leadership.”
This came from the man who, along with his wife, runs a kennel where they breed and train extra large American pit bull terriers to be fearless, ferocious security dogs as well as family-friendly pets.
The website for Dark Dynasty K9s has videos that boast of mutant-sized dogs that can jump fences and bite a person’s arm like they’re snapping a toothpick. They also display pictures and videos of their young child riding Hulk like he’s a horse to prove how safe they are.
The talk show hosts
and celebrities who are showcasing what some refer to as the largest pit bull alive might not realize it, but they’re publicly promoting a business that breeds oversized guard dogs capable of easily killing a grown man.
I say easily because smaller pit bulls can kill a man as well. Do you remember Eddie Cahill, the healthy 40-year-old man who was mauled to death by his own beloved pit bull on Christmas Day? His death, and the deaths and severe injuries of thousands of others—many of whom were children—should not be forgotten.
While watching The View, it certainly felt like they were.
After the little boy started playing the harmonica and the dog howled along, the audience and nervous looking hosts
laughed and cheered, and then that was it. There was no warning that this type of dog isn’t the kind of dog most people are equipped to handle. And there was no discussion as to how Hulk could possibly be a pure American pit bull terrier when they typically weigh between 30 and 60 pounds.
The message the audience was left with was that pit bulls, even ones as enormous as this “gentle giant,” are perfectly safe unless you don’t provide proper ownership and strong leadership. Whatever that means.
My friends, who passionately defend the embattled breed, are not happy about this new ambassador.
“This is not a pit bull,” one of them said. “This is a breed that has been mixed with a mastiff and it’s
disgusting that any breeder should be allowed to do this. They should be shut down.”
Among many pit bull loving organizations it is believed these monster dogs coming out of Dark Dynasty have been bred with painful, unhealthy genetic defects and are being trained by people with no recognized credentials, affiliations or titles. They are sold online from $2500-$25,000 and are considered status symbols to many.
The fame and fanfare surrounding Hulk will likely increase the level of interest in owning this type of dog exponentially. I can’t even imagine how much more that will jump once he and his owners are featured in their new reality show being promoted on their Facebook page.
With a stamp of approval from The View, Good Morning America, Nightline,
Inside Edition and more, Hulk and his owners from Dark Dynasty might look sweet and harmless to the general public. I doubt the families of people and pets who have been maimed or killed from canine assaults will be happy with this endorsement of a company producing enormous attack dogs which don’t require its customers to have any expertise or experience to own.
Despite the statistically high numbers of serious and fatal dog bites coming from pit bulls
compared to other breeds, they do not all attack. In fact, the majority don’t.
But like several other breeds, they have the capability to kill, so they require a much greater level of diligence and accountability on the part of their owners to make sure they are trained and treated properly.
Any responsible owner of a dangerous breed would agree, yet people continue to purchase dogs they can’t handle that later end up in shelters or get euthanized.
What’s going on at
Dark Dynasty should not be permitted and it certainly should not be celebrated and endorsed by mainstream media. Their unnecessary breed of intimidators is about to make an already bad situation so much worse. Perhaps if dog owners were to be prosecuted for the deeds of their pet as if they themselves were the culprit, fewer people would be buying animals they have no business owning.

The workshop has given the Belles the opportunity to spread out a bit, keep a display of their accessories (purses, bags, hats, wigs, etc.) and store their costumes by show. They also have ample space to set up sewing stations to create costumes.
“We now have 150 years of costuming. We don’t know where we’re going to go from here,” Knight said.
The Fashion Fabulous show on April 11 will feature 100 years worth of gowns and costumes from 1820 to 1920. “There will be some demonstrations of dressing (a model) on the runway,” Knight said. “They’ll start off in bloomers and everybody will see what goes over it all.”
Two shows are planned at Echo Centre for 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Banquet seating will allow
everyone a chance to see the runway. Edwardian-era refreshments prepared by members of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Preceptor Xi Chapter will be served on tea trolleys by the Sunshine Boys.

from Fashion Fabulous will go to the ADSS Breakfast Club and to the elementary schools Read and Feed program.
The fashion show will include a teaser for the Belles’ next venture, a Jane Austen Festival July 3–4 in the Rotary Arts District. Knight will use one of the costumes to demonstrate how people can find an outfit in a thrift store and modify it so it will be suitable for the festival.
Knight will also have a Jane Austen dress pattern uploaded to the Belles’ website, www.centennialbelles.ca following the April 11 fashion show.
One of the Belles’ goals with the festival is to challenge a
Guinness Book of World Records’ record for the most people dressed in regency costume in one gathering.
“Louisville, Kentuckybroke the Guinness Book of World Records’ record with 409 people,” Knight said.
Another group in Bath, England, recorded 550 but it has yet to be verified, she said. The Belles aim to beat this number in the summer.
More details will be released as the festival draws closer.
