Organization is key

A few months ago I bought a used truck and was

given two keys. One had remote control buttons for the locks, the other was a simple valet key. Since then, I have lost both.

The first to go missing was the fancier one. I now refer to it as “Pesky.”

I lost it right after I’d had my truck towed to the repair shop.

I’d only owned the vehicle a little over a month when one morning it wouldn’t start. Actually, it would start, but it kept shutting itself off after a couple of seconds.

It continued to do that until the nice BCAA guy showed up. For some reason he had no problem keeping it going long enough to drive it right up the ramps of his tow truck.

It never dawned on me until he was driving away that I might have discovered the solution myself with a bit more time.

“When the driver arrived I remembered I had a valet key so I gave him that,” I told my trusted mechanic, Howie.

“Is it possible it wouldn’t work for me because I was using my remote control key and had dropped it earlier?”

To my surprise, that was it exactly. Because the battery

had come loose, I had put it, along with the casing and the little screws in a plastic bag, and without its bulky plastic shell, the naked key on its own no longer worked.

Apparently it had a security feature that was shutting the engine off automatically.

Such a feature didn’t seem logical to a klutz like me, but I was relieved not to have to pay a bill later on when I picked up the truck.

Instead, Howie just fixed my broken key.

The following week I lost it.

“How is that even possible?” my husband asked as I was dumping my purse upside down on the kitchen bar. “It’s on a big ring of keys.”

“I take it off when I go for walks,” I shrugged.

“No worries. It’ll turn up.”

I didn’t panic because I knew I could use the reliable valet key until Pesky showed up.

REQUESTFOR PROPOSALS:

albernichamber.caFor more information on the benefi ts of joining the Chamber of Commerce, call Bill @ 250-724-6535

The Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce along with Bear Smart BC an organization working under the umbrella of the BC Ministry of Environment, has partnered up lead a task force in a proposed Signage Development for the Chamber of Commerce/Visitor Center property. Port Alberni has been recognized by Bear Smart BC as one of six Communities in BC that have achieved the stringent criteria required for this designation. Other Bear Smart communities include: Whistler, Naramata, Lion’s Bay, Kamloops, & Squamish.

Our collective desire is to combine the Bear Smart BC accreditation along with a needed ‘Welcome to Port Alberni – part of the Alberni Valley’ so that people travelling know they’re here and are encouraged to stop.

We invite proposals from organizations capable of the development of our desired signage inclusive of the Bear

Smart BC reference along with the Welcome message. Our desired sign should be signifi cant in scope rivalling the current signage now visible in places like Parksville BC.

Interested parties are encouraged to contact the Chamber of Commerce for more specifi c information recognizing that some in kind contributions via McLean Mill are likely part of the program.

Deadline for proposals including graphic designs of concept are required by Friday, November 21st 4:00pm. Subsequent to that the Chamber of Commerce will present a short PPT at our November 26th Dinner Meeting where graphic designs received may be included for public input.

Please contact Bill Collette at 250.724.6535 or via email [email protected] to arrange for a meeting to discuss the proposal.

Do you notice spots on your digital prints,

always in the same place? Then chances are that you have a dirty DSLR camera sensor.

Some DSLR cameras clean the sensor when you turn the camera on or off, some cameras have “clean sensor” listed in the menu, some DSLRs you have to clean the sensor manually.

One of the ways to manually clean a sensor on a DSLR is to put the camera timer on “B” for bulb, remove the lens with the camera pointed towards the ground (so you won’t have dust falling on the exposed mirror/sensor), press and hold down the shutter release while you gently use a blower to blow away the dust. DO NOT use canned compressed air, you will do serious damage to the sensor.

Speaking of cleaning

sensors, I have to go the eye doc and have my right eye “demembraneised”. Having someone touching or operating on my eye strikes ice-cold fear and shivers down my spine. I would rather lose a limb then an eye.

When was the last time that you saw a blind photographer?

I went shooting (camera, not gun) with a partner last month. He introduced me to a trail behind the fairgrounds leading down to the ravine. So off we went.

He had an older Nikon manual SLR that was loaded with black and white film and I had my old Nikon digital camera with a 10mm ~ 20mm f3.8 lens (15mm ~ 30mm on a full frame camera) extra wide lens.

We saw old speedometers, stoves, bicycle wheels, oil drums, and all sorts of trash that was just thrown down from somewhere above. We walked on, noticing ferns as far as the eye could see—I felt as if I was in a tropical forest in paradise. It was amazing to think that we were in the middle of wilderness, although if you crossed the stream and climbed the hill you would be at Tebo Avenue.

When I got home I processed my shooter friend’s 35mm black and white film and then burnt it onto a high res DVD.

•••Michael at the

library had a discussion and we both agreed that it is time for another free mini-seminar. As a

result I will be putting on a new revised “ COMPUTERS AND SECURITY – what you need to know”. Pencil in January 13 2015, Tuesday, 4:30 – 5:30pm Please - please phone the library to reserve a space, yes I know that it is free but

there is only room for 30 people….last time that I presented this seminar it was sold out and there was a fifteen person wait list. I will e-mail you the handouts after the seminar.

Aces for charityFive charities split the bounty from the annual Alberni Valley Charity Golf Classic this year: The Community Arts Council, Literacy Alberni, the Read and Feed program and Alberni Valley Rescue Squad all received $6,750. BC Children’s Hospital, the main charity for this event, received $18,000. Representatives from each group gather to celebrate.

It didn’t occur to me that I would lose that one as well.

Sure enough I misplaced it after briefly going into a large store. Retracing my steps throughout the building and parking lot I couldn’t find it anywhere. I did my best to remain calm and once again emptied my purse, but dumping the bag upside down onto the hood of my truck turned up nothing.

I was mad at myself. I mean, really. Who has only one key to their vehicle? And then loses it? That

seemed as stupid as a key designed to shut off the engine just because the tiny battery had fallen out.

Frustration turned to glee when I finally found it in the parking lot under someone else’s car. I vowed to order a couple of back-ups, and the next day when I went for a walk I committed to putting the key back on its big ring immediately after I was finished.

And I did. Grabbing it out of the pocket of my raincoat I ended up finding something else in there too: Pesky.

Let’s Make NoveMber 11th

a Day to reMeMber.

In keeping with a tradition since 2001, all Quality Foods stores close each Remembrance Day to pause and reflect on the importance of the role of our past and present service men and women.

Whether in times of war or peace, we are ever grateful for these brave souls who put themselves in harm’s way for the greater good of all Canadians.

This year, with continuing turmoil worldwide, the need becomes even more apparent to keep November 11 aside for current & future generations’ to remember and appreciate their courage and sacrifices made in the name of freedom.

We believe that when we stand united in acts of remembrance, we can make a world of difference.

Craig Filipchuk is a born and raised Port Albernian that has a special pride in his hometown. He graduated from ADSS in 1978 and married Evelyn in 1983.

Being an avid fisherman since the age of three Filipchuk has a vast knowledge about the Barkley Sound.

Filipchuk enjoys giving back to the community, he volunteers every year at Christmas and volunteers to be Santa for any of the local charitable organizations. He has been in the Kinsmen Club for many years and is currently in the K 40 Club.

Craig has always worked hard with his first job pumping gas at the old marina, and then working in maintenance for One Hour Martinising and then spent 29 years contracting for Loomis. “I decided to change paths when my job description altered. It was at this time that I went into the real estate field and never looked back. This job gives me the opportunity to really showcase the Valley and the Barkley Sound that is right in our backyard.”

“ I enjoy matching properties with clients and take pride in doing my best for each and every client.”

“I have many requests for properties of $200,000 or less so please give me a call if you are thinking of selling. I can be reached at 250-720-6220, emailed at [email protected] or to be paged call 250-723-1800.
