North Island College has seen a 20 per cent drop in enrolment for adult upgrading courses this year, since funds have been cut for Adult Basic Education programs, says Jessica Sandy, executive director of the North Island Students’ Union.

As of May 1, 2015, the provincial government is no longer funding

school districts for tuition-free upgrading courses for adults who already hold a high school diploma.

Sandy told Port Alberni city council on Monday about a campaign aiming to reinstate funding to Adult Basic Education(ABE) programs and eliminate tuition fees on these programs.

The campaign, called Christy Clark: Don’t Close the Doors on Adult Education, was initiated by various students’ unions around the province.

Sandy said in 2002 tuition fees were implemented for adult learners with high school diplomas registered in ABE programs. However in 2007 the provincial government of the

time abolished tuition fees on all adult upgrading courses in both K-12 and post-secondary systems.

“We are helping people upgrade their education so they can take advantage of our growing economy and enjoy rewarding careers...by offering free tuition for adult basic education, whether students have graduated from high school or not,” said Murray Coell, advanced education minister in a 2007 press release.

Sandy said in December 2014 the

provincial government then cut $6.9 million in funding to ABE programming and announced that in the absence of the funding, institutions would be permitted to charge tuition fees on previously cost-free ABE courses.

“This meant that as of Jan. 1, 2015 institutions would be able to charge up to $1600 per semester for adult programming,” said Sandy. “At North Island College adult learners are charged $110 per credit.”

Sandy said at the

time of the funding cut announcement in 2014 the minister of education at the time, Peter Fassbender, stated his belief that adults who had already graduated should contribute to the cost of upgrading.

“What has changed?” Sandy said. “This is the same government that Murray Coell had identified the importance of upgrading back in 2007, yet Fassbender’s comments are completely opposite to Coell’s statements.”

Wendy Kerr, an NIC

student, said statistics from the Ministry of Advanced Education reveal that students in Adult Basic Education programming are some of the most marginalized community members.

“They are women, Indigenous people and parents,” Kerr said. “Over half are employed while in studies and the majority have already graduated and will continue on to post secondary education after they finish adult basic education.”

Seasonal campers at China Creek Marina voice concerns over proposed changes

Campers clash with PAPA over changeSUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Port Alberni Port Authority wants to make changes at China Creek Marina to attract more users. But a group of seasonal campers—some of whom have been renting space for their fifth wheels and mooring their boats for more than a decade—say the changes are penalizing faithful clients.

After a flurry of e-mails from numerous seasonal campers and businesses that were worried they would be affected if the campers left the

marina, port authority president Zoran Knezevic said “I think we’ve settled all the complaints.”

PAPA wants to attract more users to its facilities, make its operation more efficient “and to market the marina to attract more customers,”

Knezevic said. He told one business

owner in an e-mail that he was aware improvements “may not be aligned with some of our clients’ expectations.”

Sid Alamo of Nanaimo, who has camped at China Creek Marina for the

past three years, and fished here for 11 years—relocated from the Lower Mainland to Nanaimo because

of its proximity to Port Alberni. He stays at the marina for five months out of the year, and objected to

a proposed change that he said would force him to remove his camper during the winter instead of

paying to store it at the campsite.

The access road to China Creek makes moving boats and campers a challenge, said Alamo.

Knezevic said some campers misunderstood changes to storage and hydro charges, but thought everything had been ironed out by last week.

“Cecilia (Addy, marina manager) is going to find a solution,” he said.

One compromise PAPA was happy to reach was opening the marina a month early, in April.

The port authority leases the marina from the Province of B.C., and had to ask

permission to extend the lease. The marina was typically open May to September, but will now open in April, Knezevic said.

Ron Lafreniere, who brings his boat to China Creek every year from Alberta, said the monthly moorage rates are among the highest on Vancouver Island because the marina is only open five months out of the year, but Knezevic said the seasonal users are paying an adjusted rate.

“The seasonal amount would be twice as much if not more, if use was calculated per month,” he noted.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

It doesn’t look like it now, but in less than five months lower Argyle Street will look a lot different as the Uchucklesaht Tribe’s new cultural and administration building plans to open its doors.

Named the Thunderbird, and presently shrouded in scaffolding, the four-storey building has been years in the making.

The Uchucklesaht first bought the old Somass Hotel in July 2013 with plans to renovate it. Those plans were quickly kiboshed.

“We had to go and get all of the old asbestos out of the

building and so in that process, all the drywall was torn down and so we were able to get in and see the guts of the old building,” said

Uchucklesaht CAO Scott Coulson.

When the tribe thought they could renovate the buildings, costs stood at about $6 million.

“At that point, after about four to five months of working on the building, we determined that it couldn’t be saved. It would have cost the same as a new building.”

The decision was made in mid-2014 to tear down the building. The

Uchucklesaht then spent several months designing a new building—increasing the project cost to $9 million.

“Then we went into tendering and construction for all of that.”

The Uchucklesaht received a development permit

from the City of Port Alberni in February 2015 and construction commenced shortly after.

The building, Coulson said, will have a lot of significance to the Uchucklesaht.

“The building will be multicoloured with colours taken from the

Uchucklesaht Tribe logo,” said Coulson. The logo colours are green, red, orange, yellow, black and white.

“The building itself is called the Thunderbird which comes from the Thunderbird’s nest (T’iitsk’in Paawats) which is up in Uchucklesaht Tribe traditional territory. It’s a very culturally sensitive spot for most nations around here.”

T’iitsk’in Paawats is located on the western shore of Henderson Lake near the mouth of Uchucklesaht Inlet on the Alberni Inlet. It’s approximately 38 kilometres southwest of Port Alberni on Vancouver Island.

To reflect its heritage, the building will be full of cultural activity.

“There will be a large carving studio on the ground floor off Kingsway [Avenue]. It will be large enough for poles and canoes and we will use it for dance classes and things like that as well,” said Coulson.

The building will also function as a meeting space for the community.

“There will be boardrooms for rent. We’re in the midst of building board tables out of wood from our treaty settlement lands. The board tables will be spectacular,” said Coulson.

Rotary at ‘corps’ of arts district

A pair of early visitors to the home show at the Glenwood Centre take advantage of a treatment at the Arbutus and Riverside Wellness Centre exhibit last Saturday.

HOMESHOW

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Have you ever imagined a Port Alberni arts district that would put others across Vancouver Island to shame?

The Rotary Arts District is ready for a transformation—and organizers want your help.

The Arrowsmith Rotary Club is forming a Rotary Corps charter to focus on projects in the arts district that stretches along Argyle Street from Eighth Avenue to

Harbour Quay.“Rotary Corps

is a group of individuals who come together and take on a community project around a specific focus,” said Arrowsmith Rotary member Theresa Kingston.

“They come together around a focus—for this one, it’s the arts district. They come together in terms of friendship, the desire to take on that project and contribute to the community.”

It’s a way for the

Rotary club to engage with those who’d like to get involved but aren’t willing or able to commit to joining Rotary.

“Quite often we’ve had people say that they’d like to get involved in the arts district but they’re not prepared at this time to join Rotary. It’s a way of connecting people to the project.”

The corps is open to anyone, no artistic talent required.

“It’s meant for anyone who has an interest in the

arts, an interest in the geographic area, an interest in connecting.”

Members do have to be aged 19 or over, as per Rotary rules.

The corps is holding its second meeting on Wednesday, March 23 at the Capitol Theatre. The meeting runs from 5:30-6:30 p.m. with a social following from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

For more information, call Kingston at 250-720-2506.

Contractors work on PAPA’s Somass boardwalk beside Somass Mill last week.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Construction has begun on the Port Alberni Port Authority’s Somass boardwalk.

The project is part of the original Island Coastal Economic Trust funding that PAPA received in 2011. The $3.45 million was to pay for Centennial Pier as well as other improvements to Fisherman’s Harbour. City council has also

given PAPA $300,000 for the boardwalk project.

Port authority operations manager Ron Kyle said the work is progressing smoothly.

“It’s going very well, extremely well. We’re right in the process now of working on the electrical component of that project,” said Kyle. Bids for the electrical work are in and conduits should be laid within the next

couple of weeks.“Bowerman will

backfill along the lines once [the electricians] installed all their conduits for their electrical and then they’ll start on their boardwalk.”

According to Kyle, the work must be completed by the end of May to take advantage of ICET funding but he hopes to have the work done much [email protected]

Work on the city’s new storm outfall on Third Avenue should be completed by the end of the

month, according to contractor Craig Bowerman. The storm outfall is the last stage of the Dry Creek flood mitigation project. The initial

phase of the project involved channel improvements along Dry Creek itself to deal with the flooding in that area.

s the B.C. government spends millions on an international brand campaign with the recycled slogan “Super, Natural B.C.,” another brand identity has

spread across Canada.This one’s unintentional.

It hit a new peak last week with the arrival of two young men from Saskatchewan, who were given one-way tickets to Vancouver and Victoria by typically burdened social services ministry staff in North Battleford.

Sorting through the blizzard of soothing sound bites and sympathetic TV clips, a clearer picture emerges.

In his initial interview with the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, Charles Neil-Curly, at 23 the elder of the

two, said he decided to head west when shelter staff told him his time had run out and he asked for bus tickets to B.C.

“When they asked if I had a place to go, I just said, ‘yeah’,”

Neil-Curly said. “I was going to the next homeless shelter anyway.”

Transients and panhandlers aren’t the only ones who say whatever they figure

will get them through another day. Politicians do it too.

Admitting she knew little about the arrivals, Premier Christy Clark suggested that both were mentally ill and deserve every support the province can give them.

B.C. housing czar Rich Coleman has also demonstrated factual flexibility as he presides over the creation of his latest single-room-occupancy drug ghetto in a residential neighbourhood in Victoria.

After quietly proposing a closed-down nursing home called Mount Edwards Court as a temporary solution to the filthy “tent city” that sprang up on provincial property last fall, Coleman abruptly announced from his Langley office Feb. 5 that the building had been bought and partly renovated for $4 million. It would house 38 people for up to a year.

I asked him if the purchase meant the conversion of Mount Edwards into permanent “low-barrier” housing for 100 people was a “done deal,” as area residents believe. “They’re wrong,” Coleman indignantly replied, and there would be community consultation over the next year.

If the closure of the Gertrude Street bridge across Kitsuksis Creek has taught us anything the past few weeks, it is that the intersection of Beaver Creek Road and River Road is busy—especially if one wants to turn left onto

River Road.We think it’s time for the Ministry of

Highways to re-visit this intersection and consider some sort of traffic control. However, we will stray from popular opinion—if our latest web poll is any indication—and say we’d rather see a roundabout than a light.

The ministry has said in the past that there is not enough traffic passing the intersection on a consistent basis to warrant a light—that an estimated one

million vehicles travelling along that road during tourist season doesn’t outweigh the quieter winter months.

We say the area has changed enough that it should be re-examined. Business is beginning to focus

on Beaver Creek Road, with the Ford dealership relocating to the area, and with the former Gill Elementary School property a potential developer’s dream.

Requests for proposals have also been taken for development at Clutesi Haven Marina.

A roundabout could be incorporated in any future development of the area from the beginning, rather than as an afterthought, as a way to keep traffic flowing. And it could be built large enough to accommodate boat trailers and logging trucks (if it must). One only has to look to Qualicum Beach or even Abbotsford to see successful examples.

Coulson editorial missed mark

To the Editor,Re: BC shutout of

Coulson puzzling, Editorial, Feb. 23.

You write ‘the provincial government has again passed over Coulson Aviation for any of its wildfire season aerial firefighting arsenal.’ This isn’t true.

The government, or anyone, including fire departments, can hire Coulson’s aircraft if they wish to, at any time. Most fixed and rotary aircraft companies do not have a standing contract with the government; they are hired on an “as and when needed” (short-term contract) basis. This practice also applies to most other equipment used for fire suppression, like dozers, lowbeds, watertenders, skidder tankers, trailers, fuel trucks and on and on.

Only a few key items are put up for tendered contracts.

Coulson did not win an aircraft tendered

contract but can still be hired for a short-term contract, if available.

You question why the province declined Coulson’s retro-fitted C-130 Hercules turbo prop air tanker. The BC government’s Protection Branch is interested in jet-powered air tankers. Turbo prop tankers have been around and been used for decades—including the C-130. Jet-powered air tankers are the next generation.

The DC-10 jet is faster, highly maneuverable and carries about 12,000 US gallons—twice the load of the Martin Mars and three times the load of the C-130. It can lay down a strip of retardant that is 50 feet wide by three-quarters of a mile long.

Retardant is far more effective than water: aerial water drops evaporate and only last about 15 minutes on a hot, dry day. Retardant is put ahead of the fire’s edge, works wet or dry and can last for

weeks.No air tankers,

whether fixed wing or rotary (helicopter) put out forest fires, since they cannot reach all the burning fuels. They can only slow down the fire’s rate of spread, or cool the edge enough to allow ground crews with equipment to safely get close enough to the action and contain the fire.

By far the best and safest method of fire suppression is getting rid of the fuel. No fuel, no fire.

This is done by having crews working a safe distance away from the main fire to construct fireguards, from which the fuel between it and the main fire is burned out (like the Dog Mountain fire).

No fire is worth a human injury or death.

Bob Pfannenschmidt,Port Alberni

Editor’s note: Bob Pfannenschmidt is a retired wildland firefighter previously employed by the provincial government.

Taxi owners deserve security tooTo the Editor,

Lawyers invest many years in law school fees and are protected from unfair competition. Shouldn’t taxi owner operators that take loans to buy their business also have security?

If governments have decided to change the rules in the middle of the capitalist game, should civil servants that get superior benefits to private enterprise be contracted out and face competition as well?

Taxi industry members outnumber other businesses that are deemed too big to fail and are bailed out by government. We are small shareholder operators that compete with each other, employ people and have never begged for corporate welfare.

Could consumers afford the fare if taxis were nationalized and we all became public

servants? Why are our elected premiers tampering with a system that works and has withstood the test of time?

If we go bankrupt, will they throw us a lifeline?

Don’t taxi lives matter, or should governments cave in to uninformed opinion without fair hearing?

R. Frankow,Port Alberni

Editor’s note: R. Frankow is a taxi owner in Port Alberni.

Gentrifiers biggest obstacle

To the Editor,The only knuckle-

draggers that keep objecting to and politically blocking safe-injection sites in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside have historically been those politically supportive, business/commerce speculative interests that have been gentrifying the area for the last 30 years.

Liz Stonard,Port Alberni

To the Editor,Re: Time to take MSP

off life support, B.C. Views, Feb. 24.

I enjoyed Tom Fletcher’s column on MSP premiums and it brought back to mind some research I conducted when I was at Decima Research in the late ‘80s.

The results were surprising. We found that a significant minority of respondents in provinces that had premiums believed that their premiums covered the entire cost of the health

system. Far from making them more cautious about accessing the system, many of those premium-paying respondents thought “I’m paying for it, so why shouldn’t I go to the hospital/clinic whenever I want.”

As is the case today, proponents of premiums argued that it would make people more sensitive to the costs of the services they used; the converse turned out to be true.

From A4The tables won’t be

the only part of the building using the Uchucklesaht’s own old growth.

A corner post on the building, at Kingsway and Argyle, is also be made out of old growth cedar.

“That corner post is

an old growth cedar log from our treaty settlements land. It won’t be carved, it’s been stripped and sealed,” he said.

That corner of the building will feature a restaurant that will hopefully be based on first nations cuisine.

“When you put a request for proposal out you can suggest things but you can’t command them,” said Coulson.

“That’s one of the things we put into the RFP, that we would like them to be serving traditional foods. It might turn out that way and it might not, depending on how many people apply.”

The tribe will select a winner in the coming weeks.

Aside from the restaurant, boardrooms and carving studio, the building will host the tribe’s human services department downstairs, a small fish processing area for food fish, a small gym for staff and citizens and the tribe’s administration and council chambers.

Currently, the tribe leases the former

Hupacasath admin building on Beaver Creek Road—a building Coulson can’t wait to get out of.

“I can hardly wait to get into the [new] building and get out of my heat box over here,” said Coulson.

The building will also play host to both short- and long-term accommodation.

“We’ll have three motel units that we’ll use for medical travel and then we have 32 apartments,” said Coulson. The apartments will be mostly two-bedrooms and open to everyone.

“They’re higher end apartments. They have quartz counter tops, hardwood floors and each apartment has its own heat pump so they’ll be the only apartment that’s air conditioned in Port Alberni.”[email protected]

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Commercial property owners city-wide could get a break on taxes if they spend at least $100,000 on improving their buildings.

The City of Port Alberni has given three readings to two commercial revitalization tax exemption bylaws that will encompass all commercially zoned areas within the city—including city owned buildings at Harbour Quay.

The city’s current bylaw applied only to Uptown and allowed building owners to receive a property tax break on any building improvements they did.

That bylaw, adopted by city council in 2013, had two options:

• “With a minimum $1 million investment the owner is eligible to apply for a 100 per cent municipal tax exemption on the assessed value of improvements (buildings) for maximum 10-year term. The accumulated exemption amount cannot exceed 25 per cent of the total project budget.

• “With a minimum $100,000 investment the owner is eligible to apply for a 100 per cent municipal tax exemption on assessed value improvements (buildings) for

a maximum five year term. The accumulated exemption amount cannot exceed 25 per cent of the total project budget.”

Council agreed with economic development manager Pat Deakin’s proposal to expand the bylaw to both private and city owned properties at Harbour Quay that had previously been excluded. When the previous tax exemption bylaw had been passed, private properties in Harbour Quay were thought to be in a good position to benefit from improvements to the Uptown commercial area indirectly, thus eliminating the need for them to receive a tax exemption for improvements.

“There was a belief that the private sector properties in Harbour Quay also would enjoy an advantage in that it was a commercial area where most residents brought their visitors to when they were here in the city and arguably it was seen as the most desirable area of the city,” Deakin said.

But that hasn’t proven to be the case, he added.

Deakin also recommended a new revitalization tax exemption bylaw to cover the rest of the commercially zoned buildings in the city not incorporated in the previous ones.

“[The new bylaw] applies to every commercial area in

the city that is not currently covered and it provides a five-year tax exemption on the differential,” said Deakin. City planner Scott Smith added that it would apply to some light industrial properties on upper Johnston as well.

Commercial building owners city-wide won’t be taxed on the increased assessment

value caused by making improvements for up to five years.

“It’s making sure there’s no disincentive,” Deakin said.

“If the money that had been invested in the building had increased its assessment from $500,000 to $700,000, you would forego the taxes on the

differential between the $700,000 and the $500,000 but you would continue to get the taxes from the $500,000.”

The threshold on the new bylaw is $100,000 worth of improvements.

The current tax exemption bylaws have generated some success, Deakin added.

“There are some businesses that have taken advantage of them and improved their buildings and in doing so, improved the look of Uptown a great deal.”

The new bylaw could improve the look of the entire city, he said. The bylaws will be subject to a public hearing before they can be adopted.

City gives break for business revitalization

New and updated commericial revitalization bylaws will give tax breaks to more of the city’s businesses

From A7The work held up

this December, with the only flooding being minor and localized to the Bute Street and Third Avenue.

Approximately a foot of standing water pooled near Bute Street during the heavy rains in

December 2015. While according to city engineer Guy Cicon, the flood mitigation work on Dry Creek addressed the flooding caused by the creek, it didn’t address issues with the city’s aging storm drain network.

That’s something the new storm outfall

should mitigate, according to City of Port Alberni engineering technician Boyd Wong.

“What we’re trying to achieve there is to install another storm outfall to help alleviate the flooding that we get in that area, in front of Deja Vu Books. We always

seem to have issues with water sitting in that area when we have heavy rains,” said Wong.

“This will be a way of helping alleviate the immediate problems in the area and then eventually it’s designed to continue up Bute Street.”

The new outfall will

only collect storm water up to the Bute Street and Fourth Avenue intersection for now..

Currently, Bowerman said that the storm outfall itself will be completed by the end of March, with paving running into April.

“We’re lowering

sewer lines in,” Bowerman said.

The storm outfall will go just south of the Husky gas station; the city’s current one in the area goes under the gas station property.

According to the city’s director of finance Cathy Rothwell, the city has

$2.7 million allocated for the Dry Creek flood works—split into three funding pieces between the province, the federal government and the city. The project was contracted out to Bowerman Excavating and including the storm outfall, has cost $2.3 million to date.

New storm outfall will help with flooding

Trends brings Street Thug Barbers to townKARLY BLATSALBERNI VALLEY NEW

Vancouver’s Street Thug Barbers are coming to Port Alberni on Saturday, March 19 to provide free haircuts for the less fortunate.

Trends Design Team are organizing a full-day event taking place under a big tent in the parking lot at trends on Margaret Street. From 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. the Thug Barbers will be giving free haircuts to those in need after teaching the stylists at Trends new skills for men’s haircuts.

The Street Thug Barbers are a non-profit organization made up of three male barbers who provide free haircuts to the homeless and less fortunate every Sunday on East Hastings Street in Vancouver.

“Each free haircut provides hope to those in need and by rebuilding the human connection, we provide hope for humanity and give those in need a chance to grow into whatever they dream of,” the Street Thug Barber’s website notes.

Each of the Thugs have different life changing experiences but together they all fight for the same cause, to end homelessness and better the world one haircut at a time.

Rosanne Doiron, owner of Trends Design Team, said her team at Trends wanted to learn how to do some barbering and men’s cuts and invited the Thug Barbers to the Alberni Valley to teach them. She said the barbers offered to provide free haircuts in the afternoon and eventually a full-day event was planned.

“We’re serving lunch now too sofree hotdogs and

hamburgers, donated by Buy-Low Foods,” Doiron said.

There will also

be donation boxes for clothing and nonperishable food items that will be

distributed among Port Alberni’s non-profit societies.

Full day event features haircuts for the less fortunate courtesy of Vancouver barbers

From A8In subsequent

comments to reporters, he said the province doesn’t really need city

zoning, but will apply for it anyway.

(That won’t be a problem with Victoria’s far-left city council, which is keen

to add a supervised injection site too.)

On Feb. 24, Coleman was asked if he is concerned that the 88 housing units at two

locations would fill up and other transients would arrive to take their place.

By that time the tent squat appeared

to have about 100 people in residence, with the usual overdoses, violence and prostitution.

Coleman assured us

it hasn’t happened in Abbotsford or Maple Ridge, where tent camps have finally been cleaned up after shelters and housing

were provided. The next day, he was

asked if transitional accommodations would be sufficient to end the camp.

“They’re not actually all that transitional,” Coleman replied. “We’ll take Mount Edwards through a zoning process.

“We’ve got about 100 beds there.

“We’ve bought the building so it’s hardly transitional. We’ve permanently done that.”

Fast forward to March 11.

The 38 Mount Edwards spaces are full, another 40 rooms and camping spaces at a former youth custody centre are almost full, and the province applies for a court order to clear the Victoria camp.

A representative of the advocacy group Together Against Poverty Society goes on local radio to pledge legal support for the campers.

How many are there now? At least 100, he says.

Meanwhile in Maple Ridge, where the “homeless” problem is all fixed, Coleman has just extended temporary shelter funding and paid $5.5 million for a 61-room motel to fix it some more.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs may have just ended their 2015-16 season but head coach Kevin Willison is already looking ahead to the next one.

The Bulldogs lost 7-3 against the Nanaimo Clippers in Game 5 of the first round of the BCHL playoffs on March 11.

“As soon as the season ends, you start preparation for next season,” Willison said.

The team will host two spring camps, one in Port Alberni and one in Osoyoos.

“Those are what you look forward to, you get the talent to come in here and try to play at the BCHL level,” said Willison.

“We’ve scouted all year long, whether it be in Canada or the U.S. and those handpicked guys coming to camp will have to come in and showcase themselves to make the hockey team.”

Willison felt like the youth of the team held them back this year.

“We only had four 20-year-olds where you’re allowed six but we thought we had good enough 19-year-olds to carry us,” he said. “But you can’t substitute anything for experience. Would

have been nice to have six 20-year-olds, but we only had four. They logged a lot of ice time and were the heart and soul of our hockey team—you’ve got to give them a lot of credit.”

While Willison would like an older team, having the right players is more important. “As long as they fit into our program. We have a number of [players born in 1996] coming back next year so whether they fill that roster spot for us or we go out get a more experienced [player]... who knows.”

The team has other things to work on as well—as was evidenced in their season-ender—which they lost 7–3. Nanaimo capitalized on several power plays.

“At the end of the day, I thought we played extremely hard but we fell short,” said Willison, adding that it didn’t help having forwards Chris Schutz and Jordan Sandhu out for the game.

“We were good on the penalty kill through the series and then in Game 5 we fell apart there and Nanaimo took over on their powerplay.”

This exhibit features her incredible eye for details in portraits combined with her love of travel.

Book donations

The Rollin Art Centre is still taking all your gently used books for our annual giant book sale, taking place on a new weekend this year: Friday, May 13 to Saturday May 14. Start your spring cleaning

early, not only help to de-clutter your house, but the Rollin Art Centre benefits, tremendously. What a better way to help the Rollin Art Centre by donating all your books, as well as taking DVD’s, CD’s, and puzzles for their annual book sale.

Please no magazines, atlases, National Geographic, Encyclopedia’s, Reader’s Digest, textbooks and worn books.

Barkley concert

Conductor Bonnie Wallbank and Barkley Sounds Community Choir are excited about their spring concert, Sun., April 17 at ADSS auditorium. “Let’s Shakeit Up” promises a sparkling mix of rock ‘n roll, folk, and contemporary classics. Guests will be Phil’s Harmonic’s String Orchestra,

Dennis Olsen on guitar and Justin Johannesson on drums. Concert time is 2:30 pm. Tickets are on sale now, $10 at Rollin Art Centre (cash only), Salmonberry’s and Echo Centre, or $12 at the door

Timbre! celebrates

“Time To Say Goodbye” is this name

of this bittersweet concert to be held Sun., April 24 at 2:30

pm at ADSS Theatre. Please help us send our incredible conductor off on a long and happy retirement. A “Cake and Coffee” reception will be held at ADSS after the performance in order for the audience to say their own personal good-byes and wish her well.

Tickets are now on sale, but are selling quickly! Tickets available at Echo Centre, Rollin Art Centre (cash only), Finishing Touches, Salmonberry’s and from your favourite choir members. Adults/Seniors - $20 and Children/Students (under 18) $5.

If you are interested in being involved at

this year’s Days with the Arts during the Solstice Arts festival, please contact the Rollin Art Centre.
