Dear Parents & Carers It feels such a long time ago that we last sent out a newsletter, with half-term, residential and snow all occurring since we last sent one out. I hope everyone had a nice half-term, I seem to recall some storms whilst on Croyde Beach during the break but it was lovely all the same. RESIDENTIAL Then two weeks ago we had a fabulous week with children from Y5/6 across the federation at Heatree. I am sure you have enjoyed the photographs we have shared on both schools' Facebook pages. They represented the week extreme-ly well and I am always blown away by the bravery and tenacious approach you see from children, some of whom you were not necessarily expecting it. I saw so many children challenge themselves, whether that be climbing a tower, squeezing between crevices, sitting on a kayak or even trying food they did not think they liked. The children's behaviour was excellent and it was lovely to see as the week progressed, how children from both schools mixed and socialised in their spare time. You would have heard about the troubles we had getting there and a few problems with children's luggage getting soaked but those children affected coped with this really well and Hea-tree Centre were also wonderfully kind by laundering bedding and clothing so that the children had everything they needed. The children loved the room inspections and so do not ever let them tell you that they do not know how to tidy their rooms - they all did it very well, whilst we were away. Thank you to Mrs Smith, Mrs Lines, Mrs Harvie, Mrs Pringle, Mrs Hart Prieto and Mrs Campion for spending time away from their own families to ensure that the children in our federation were able to enjoy this experience. We now look forward to the Y3/4 children having their residential in April. SPORT Well done to all of our children who participated in last weeks sporting events, where we had Uplowman children par-ticipating in Cage Football and also the Culm Valley Swimming Gala, where we did especially well, coming 4th amongst a lot of schools, many who are a great deal bigger. Well done to Katie, Lily-Rose, Ruby, Jack K, Murray, William C, Rio, William J, Harrison, Henry, Nea, Nancy, Emma, Daisie, Ziva, Libby and Charlotte for participating and representing the school so well. Thank you to Mrs Mannings, Mrs Lines and Mr Rice for accompanying them and also to those parents who helped with transport. Next week, (13th) our federation football team has a match against Uffculme Primary School and this will take place at Uffculme Secondary School. SNOW The rest of last week, had things gone to plan, would have seen activities linked to World Book Day and assemblies by Class 3 at Halberton and Snowdrops at Uplowman, both sharing their adventures of the previous week at Heatree. However, as we all know now, the Beast of the East put pay to that but I hope you all managed to enjoy a memorable couple of days in the snow while the schools were closed. It seemed a strange thing to be doing, announcing the clos-ing of the school on Wednesday evening when there wasn't any snow around, especially when I was based 30 miles away but having seen the issues that those who needed to travel faced, I am relieved that we did make that call and pleased that so many wonderful memories were created for our families. Rescheduled assemblies will be taking place for Snowdrops Class next week at Uplowman on Thursday 15th March at 3pm and for Class 3 at Halberton on Friday 23rd March at 3pm. CAR ISSUES At Uplowman recently, we have had a number of instances recently where parents have brought their cars into the playground before and after school. This is not permitted and we would kindly ask parents to refrain from bringing ve-hicles into the school playground.

ABSENT FROM SCHOOL—If your child is un-

well and unable to attend school please call

the office first thing before 9.15 if possible,

so that your child can be marked in the reg-

ister as unwell and not as an unauthorised

absence. You will need to call the office

every morning that your child is absent.

To view our newsletter in colour please ask for

an email version. Pop into the office and let the

admin team have your email address. Thank

you

Make cheques payable

to DCC or Devon County

Council, thank you.

PLAYGROUND INSTALLATION At Halberton next week, we are looking forward to some new playground equipment being installed. This begins on Wednesday 14th March and this may carry over into subsequent days. This does mean that there will be workman on site and also a skip and vans in the vicinity of the school, so please be mindful of that as you approach the school. UPLOWMAN SIAMS INSPECTION As you will know, Uplowman School underwent a SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican & Methodist Schools) In-spection, just before we broke up for half-term and at the time the outcome of the inspection was still confidential. We are delighted to be able to share with you that the Inspection resulted in Uplowman being graded Outstanding in all of the areas that were inspected. what a brilliant result and well done to all of the staff, governors, parents and es-pecially the children who were all so impressive. We will be receiving a visit from the Archdeacon of Exeter to present our certificate and we look forward to this when the date is confirmed. Please look out for the dates of Parent/Teacher Consultations which will take place just after the Easter Holidays. In the meantime, have a good weekend. Best wishes Steven Badcott - Executive Headteacher

The children and adults all had a brilliant time at Heatree last week, despite the slight

hiccup on route to the centre. The children began the week with a ‘Team Quest’ and

had to work together to complete a series of challenges, this was a great way for the

Uplowman and Halberton children to get to know each other. After much excitement

of unpacking, making beds and sharing rooms the children did finally get to sleep. Dur-

ing the course of the week children challenged themselves in a range of activities in-

cluding Archery, Bushcraft, Kayaking, Climbing and Abseiling and a Wilderness adven-

ture around Hound Tor before ending the week Orienteering.

The children were amazing, eating well, washing up, sleeping and getting themselves

prepared each day for activities, they were even the best packers we have seen.

It is fair to say that all had a wonderful week; it was lovely to see the children working

together and supporting each other to achieve!

Photographs of the trip are on display outside Snowdrops classroom or in Halberton

school hall if you would like to see more.

Next week is British Science week. The children will be

taking part in recycling workshops, and focusing on the

environment . Thank you for all your boxes, containers

and recycling. We still need plant pots, seeds and com-

post, Please.

‘I really enjoyed kayaking because it was something new and exciting and I even jumped

in at the end, it was freezing!’ Katie.

‘I loved the weaselling because I learnt how to get through small spaces without hurting

myself.’ Rupert.

‘My favourite bit was kayaking because I’ve never done it before and it was great fun!’

Jack W (HPS).

‘I enjoyed the climbing because I like climbing trees with my brother and this was much

higher. I got to the top and sounded the horn.’ William.

The half term is flying by, and we have had an action-packed few weeks, with the resi-dential, snow days and first 'normal' week back this week. We were glad to be able to celebrate a postponed World Book Day today. So many chil-dren came in dressed up as characters from books they have read. It's always great to see children enthusing about what they have read. In maths we've just come to the end of a 'fraction fortnight', and in literacy we've started reading a beautiful story. Our topic work has included learning all about the Normans. Next week, we will be enjoying lots of activities as part of our Science Week.

Head lice and nits are very common in young children. They don't have anything to do with dirty hair and are usually picked up from head-to-head contact. Check if it's head lice

Head lice are small insects, up to 3mm long. Head lice eggs (nits) are yellow, brown or white (empty shells) and attached to the hair. Head lice sometimes can make your head feel: itchy like something is moving in your hair The only way to be sure someone has head lice is by finding live lice or eggs. You can do this by combing their hair with a special fine-toothed comb (detection comb). You can buy these online or at pharmacies. How to get rid of head lice You can treat head lice without seeing a GP. Treat head lice as soon as you spot them. You should check everyone in the house and treat them on the same day if

they have head lice. There's no need to keep your child off school if they have head lice. Use lotion or spray to treat head lice You can use medicated lotions and sprays that kill head lice in all types of hair. You can buy these from pharmacies, su-permarkets or online. Head lice should die within a day. Lotions and sprays come with a comb to remove dead lice and eggs. Some treatments need to be repeated after a week to kill any newly hatched lice. Check the pack to see whether they're OK for you or your child to use and how long they should be left in the hair. If lotions or sprays don't work, speak to your pharmacist about other treatments. Some treatments aren't recommended because they're unlikely to work: products containing permethrin head lice "repellents" electric combs for head lice tree and plant oil treatments, such as tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil and lavender oil herbal remedies If you don't want to use chemicals You can buy a special fine-toothed comb (detection comb) online or from pharmacies to remove head lice and nits. There will be instructions on the pack to follow, but typically you: use the comb on wet or dry hair – although it usually works best on wet hair with conditioner comb the whole head of hair, from the roots to the ends repeat every few days for 2 weeks You can't prevent head lice There's nothing you can do to prevent head lice. You can reduce the risk of lice spreading by avoiding head-to-head con-tact. Don't use medicated lotions and sprays to prevent head lice. This can irritate the scalp. There's no need for children to stay off school, or to wash laundry on a hot wash.
