From Fr. Joe Two weeks in a row now, in Cycle C of the
Sunday Lectionary, we hear somewhat disturbing
Gospels. Last Sunday we heard Jesus saying he
wanted to set the world on fire, and not just a
regular old fire, but a blazing one. In the Gospel
for this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus tells his
disciples, “Strive to enter through the narrow
gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter
but will not be strong enough. After the master of
the house has arisen and locked the door, then
will you stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord,
open the door for us.’” (Luke 13:24-25) Two things
this communicates which go against some
common ideas many people have about Jesus:
(1) the gate to heaven is narrow, (2) don’t wait
too long, there is a time when the gate will be
locked.
Surprisingly to some, Jesus doesn’t say that the
gates to heaven are wide open and everyone is
welcome just the way you are! (Well, actually,
everyone is welcome, but the way is narrow, and
apparently difficult to get through since Jesus
said many will attempt to enter, but will not be
strong enough.) But wait a minute, what about
the nice, welcoming, accepting Jesus who loves
me as I am, and everyone else too? Yes, Jesus
loves you just the way you are, but he loves you
too much to let you stay that way!
Well, ok (maybe), but since Jesus really loves me
there’s no urgency for me to change and get my
life in order because he will always accept me
whenever I decide to turn to him. Right? Yes,
Jesus really loves us, but that is why he’s giving us
a heads-up – a warning – because there is a time
when the door will be locked, and then it will be
too late.
Ok, ok. But, hey, if I go to Mass every week, that’s
enough, right? Going to Mass is important and is
a great start, but that alone is like doing the bare
minimum – we should be going to Mass anyway.
“[Y]ou stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord,
open the door for us.’ He will say in reply, ‘I do
not know where you are from.’ And you will say,
‘We ate and drank in your company and you
taught in our streets.’ Then he will say to you. ‘I do
not know where you are from.’” (Luke 13:25-27)
Why didn’t the Lord know where they were from
(i.e. know them)? How do you get to know
anyone? Really know them? You can start by
getting to know facts and other things about
them, but to really get to know someone you
have to spend time with them, be in their
presence, listen to and talk with them, etc. We at
All Saints Parish have some wonderful
opportunities to do all of those things with our
Lord. Yes, there are the regular and varied
opportunities for Mass –weekday and weekend –
as well as confessions (M-F), Morning and
Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours with
an associated Holy Hour (M-F).

Saints Catholic School and Wednesday evening
Faith Formation for children and their parents,
and Youth Ministry for grades 6-12, and Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Also,
Ramblers for women (who meet during the
summer months), and Beads & Brew for men.
And, Let’s Talk Catholic – Live with Fr. Scott
continues on Thursday evenings. And soon
(targeting to start sometime in September)
Perpetual Adoration, with 24/7 opportunities to
spend some time in the presence of our Lord
with the Blessed Sacrament. Along with your own
private time in prayer, we have lots of
opportunities to spend time getting to know God
better – and more intimately.
A couple of other things to let you know about.
If you’ve been to St. Mary Church of All Saints
Parish recently, you probably noticed that the
main crucifix has been modified to be more
properly proportioned. It no longer looks like (as
some – even Fr. Larry Richards during our parish
mission – had described it) the “popsicle stick
crucifix.” The corpus is the same, but the
horizontal crossbeam and the top of the cross
(above the corpus) has been cut back to be
more in proportion.
Also at St. Mary Church, an ambularium is being
built in the large sanctuary to make a more
intimate space for, and a closer connection
between, the altar and tabernacle. This
ambularium is a stand-alone wall – curved to
match the shape of the sanctuary’s back wall –
which will also provide a space for liturgical
preparations to be carried out (e.g. by altar
servers) without disturbing the liturgy. The
ambularium is being constructed by our very
talented All Saints Parish maintenance staff.
I’d like to give a report regarding the scramble
style Golf Outing in Gaylord in support of our
seminarians. All Saints Parish had two teams in
the outing. (See the pictures on p.8). Larry
LaCross and Mark Balko were kind and tolerant
enough to play with me – unfortunately due to a
miscommunication our fourth team member was
unable to join us – and we had the high score!
Even I realize that is not the objective when
playing golf, but we did win a consolation prize!
What was that? Appropriately – at least for me –
a pack of plastic practice golf balls. (With those
balls to practice with – watch out next year!)
Now the real objective of the golf outing was to
raise money for the Seminarian Education Fund.
Thank you to: Brian Faylor, Dave Szydlowski, and
Joe Garant from All Saints Parish who played
with seminarian Colin Wright. Since All Saints
Parish has more seminarians than any other
parish in the diocese, maybe in 2020 we could
have more teams representing our parish. Have
a blessed week,
Stewardship in Our Readings Today's reading from Isaiah describes the Israelites bringing their offering
to the Lord "in clean vessels." The gift of myself - my patient endurance
and fidelity to the will of God - is as important as the monetary gift I offer.

new procedures that we will be implementing
beginning this year to make for smooth facility
usage.
For your convenience, there will be two
offerings of this meeting, and representatives
will only need to attend one.

“Their Voice”
“Gosnell” Film Recap Through a generous donation to cover
the cost of the movie license, the parish
pro-life group Their Voice, hosted a free
screening of “Gosnell: The Trial of
America’s Biggest Serial Killer” August 12th
here in the Parish Center.
The evening began with the opportunity
for parishioners to learn more about the
pro-life group that has been formed at All
Saints Parish, and how they can get
involved.
The petition to End Dismemberment
Abortion was available for people to sign.
There was also an opportunity for those in
attendance to listen to Kathy Newhouse
share information on the Alpena Baby
Pantry.
The event was able to collect donations of money, clothes, pull-ups,
diapers, etc. for families with infants and toddlers who are helped through
the Alpena Baby Pantry.
While the movie had
difficult subject matter to
view, it is important to be
educated on what is
happening in our country,
so we can better affect
change.
If you were not able to
come and see the film, it is
available to rent in our
local Family Video store,
as well as to purchase
online.

Parish Vision All Saints Parish is a spiritual and faith-filled family,
embraced by God’s love. We are centered on the
Holy Eucharist, inspired by the Communion of Saints
and empowered by the Holy Spirit to enliven and
ignite a community bound by love. We are united in
vibrant service under the leadership of the Trinity.
Parish Mission We, the members of All Saints Parish are called as a
sacramental people to grow in our faith and
participate fully in the one Body of Christ, centered in
the Eucharist. We value each other’s gifts and talents
as we serve the needs of our community while living
the truth and love of the Gospel.
Need a Ride to Mass?
Our parish partners
with Thunder Bay Transportation Authority to
provide a ride for those who are in need.
Those who need a ride will need to call TBTA
(ph: 989-356-4596) two hours before you would
like to be picked up to schedule your ride. If
you wish to have it charged, you must tell TBTA
dispatcher you are charging it to All Saints
Parish (we will not be doing reimbursements as
we would have no proof of a ride).
The parish will cover the ride only to/from
Church for the 4 PM Saturday Mass and the
11 AM Sunday Mass (based on the hours of
operation for TBTA).
