A FARO LS880 mid-range laser scanner was set up in the center of the churchproper and in the tower, and, within minutes, the desired data was acquired.

Following the fire, the structural integrity of the building’s walls and tower were substantially

weakened. In most areas of the building, traditional methods of measurement and architectural

documentation were not possible due to inaccessibility and dangerous unstable conditions.

Measured drawings in CAD format provided information unattainable using standard methods

Finials are sculptured ornaments,often in the shape of a leaf or flower,

at the top of a gable, pinnacle, or

similar structure.

A damaged finial that was deformed byheat of the the fire was rescued. A

Konica-Minolta VIVID 9i digitizer (laser

scanner) was used to scan the object in

the AIST lab.

The highly accurate close-range scan data can be used to reform the damaged

object back to its original shape. From there the finials can be replicated and

placed in their proper position on the reconstructed church spires.
