Alphabet Extension - Letter Recognition“Yahoo! We’re Learning The Alphabet”

Lesson Objective: Children will reinforce the ABC’s while singing and moving to a different alphabet tune and learn to recognize the letters.

Interactive Dialogue• Using the Visual Aids set of alphabet flash cards, do a walk through

of the alphabet. Have the children identify each letter as you hold up a flash card and place it on the board in sequence. Once all the letters are on the board, do an echo reading of the alphabet with the children.

• Pass out all of the Bridging Activity alphabet flash cards in random order for the children to color.

• Play “Who’s Next” with the manipulative alphabet cards. The teacher keeps the letter “A”. Stand up first. Model, “I’m first because I’m the letter “A.” Who’s next?” The child with the letter “B” stands up and says, “I’m next! I’m the letter “B.” “Who’s next?” The children will form a line, left to right, around the room. Once all the children are lined up, have them recite the alphabet with each child holding up their card when their letter is said.

• Tell the children they are going to learn a new tune for singing the alphabet and emphasize there are 3 silly letters in the song (E, O, X). Practice making the silly letter sounds for these 3 letters before listening to the song. Have the children listen for these letters as they listen to the song Yahoo! We’re Learning The Alphabet and observe you doing the movements.

• Invite the children to learn the song and movements. Walk the children through the movements in short segments. Have them repeat the movements as you say the words to the song.

• Play the song and have the children sing and do movements. Repeat.
