Check

Before presenting the alphabet tasks, check student’s readiness for an alphabet program.REMEMBER: Students require the phonemic awareness skill of initial sound awareness prior to the introduction of a formalised alphabet program.

Author’s Note and Check Readiness Alphabet Letter Sounds Games and Worksheets PLD Organisation Pty. Ltd. 3

A Note From The AuthorIt is common practice for day care centres, kindergartens, and other early childhood services to introduce formal literacy concepts. The intention is an admirable one; to provide students with early literacy skills. However, the negative side of presenting formal literacy concepts without attention to pre-requisite skills is that it can produce complications for a significant number of students.

There is a developmental time for the introduction of concepts such as the alphabet, reading and spelling. This “ideal” time for teaching such skills is not determined by a child’s age but rather their acquisition of other base pre-requisite skills. The presence of pre-requisite skills determines a child’s ‘readiness’ for the introduction of formal literacy concepts.

Readiness for the AlphabetStudents require the phonemic awareness skill of initial sound awareness in order to fully understand the alphabet system. Why? When students are conscious of single sounds (i.e. they can ‘hear’ and ‘say’ the beginning sounds in words) only then does the alphabet system make sense; as the alphabet symbols represent sounds (or phonemes) in words. For example; When a child can identify that ‘sun’ starts with a ‘sssss’ and ‘tap’ starts with a ‘t’ it is then an ideal time to introduce the alphabet symbols that correspond with the sounds that the child is aware of.

Too often the alphabet is introduced without any explicit attention to initial sound awareness. As a result of this approach:

1. While a proportion of students will make the connection that the alphabet represents the sounds they can ‘hear’ in words.

2. There will be a remaining proportion of students who will struggle to acquire the alphabet or will acquire a letter naming dominance. [Refer to the ‘Notes from the author ...’ in the text Alphabet ... the Multi-sensory Way! for an explanation of why alphabet letter sound recall is more important for acquiring early reading and spelling skills.]

Refer to pages 4-8 before presenting the Alphabet Sound Worksheets.

Alphabet Letter Sound KnowledgeStudents require alphabet knowledge in order to embark on the process of learning to read and spell. How-ever, rather than letter naming ability, letter sound knowledge is the more important skill for entry into formal-ized literacy learning.

For example:

• In order to spell the basic word ‘dog’ a child must first “sound-out” (or phonemically segment) “d”, “oh”, “g” and then the child must recall and apply in correct order the alphabet letter sounds.

• In order to read the word ‘dog’ a child must recognize each letter symbol and convert each symbol into the correct sound “d”, “oh”, “g” and then the child must blend the sounds together (phonemic blending ability).

In neither of the above early spelling and reading processes did alphabet letter naming come into the equation.

Many years of experience working with students has revealed a pattern. It is alphabet letter sound ability that is the more difficult of the two areas for students to acquire and it is alphabet let-ter sound ability that is the weaker skill for many students entering Year 1. For such students, from the outset of Year 1 entry, the absence of letter sound ability presents an immediate and significant barrier to acquisition of early literacy development.

This program aims to establish a strong letter sound ability in students.

4 Alphabet Letter Sounds Games and Worksheets PLD Organisation Pty. Ltd. Establish Initial Phoneme Awareness

Establish Initial Phoneme AwarenessAs the alphabet represents the phonological (or sound structure) of words, it is advisable to fully develop initial phoneme awareness before embarking on an alphabet program. This can be achieved by developing the ability to identify and verbalize initial continuant sounds in common words before developing this ability with the more subtle stop sounds.

Step 1

Establish the awareness of Continuant

Sounds(The ‘long’ sounds)

The ‘long’ sounds./m/ as in ‘mat’ /w/ as in ‘whale’/s/ as in ‘sun /y/ as in ‘yes’/l/ as in ‘lion’ /a/ as in ‘apple’/r/ as in ‘red’ /e/ as in ‘egg’/v/ as in ‘van’ /i/ as in ‘itchy’/z/ as in ‘zoo’ /o/ as in ‘orange’/f/ as in ‘fish’ /u/ as in ‘up’/n/ as in nose’

Once continuant initial phonemic awareness skills have been established progress onto stop sound awareness.

Step 2

Establish the awareness of Stop Sounds

(The ‘short’ sounds)

The ‘short, subtle, quiet’ sounds.

/t/ as in ‘top’ /g/ as in ‘girl’

/p/ as in ‘pot’ /d/ as in ‘dog’

/b/ as in ‘boy’ /h/ as in ‘hole’

/k/ as in ‘cat’ /j/ as in ‘jet’ and kite’

Once the awareness of stop phonemic sounds has been established progress onto an alphabet program.
