CENTER AND SCHOOL : HALF MOON BAY, CALIFORNIAPROFESSOR CHIP SULLIVAN LA 103: ENERGY, FANTASY, AND FORM FALL 2010tasked with creating a center and school for sustainable design. this project was meant to integrate metaphysics and sustainable design principles as an adjunct to the existing microclimate and habitat in the coastal setting of half moon bay, california.

design process: based on the overwhelming winds encountered on site. classrooms nestled into the ground, pathways and roads took on the form of what could be knownasaflowingconstantbreeze.allothersurfacesandplantings were inspired by the short, violent bursts of wind that swept across the landscape at unpredictable speeds and directions

the resulting landscape is one that cannot easily be mistaken with the natural. plant height and density increases as one moves towards the ocean, blocking winds and enhancing the visitor’s sense of contrasts that exist on site. this design aims to harness and highlight the essence of the site by employing appropriate wind-energy capture devices. the balance between provocation and comfort is met with minimal intervention.

design process: based on the severe contrast between the hard and straight angles of san fransisco urbanity and the dramatic topography and curvilinear forms of the overgrown site; these linear forms and topographical indications were used to synthesize and create spaces for program. the design aims to incorporate features reminiscent of the prior purpose of the site as a freeway offramp, mainly in the topographic form of the site A

this project involved intervention on site to memorialize the lives lost in the indian ocean tsunami of 2004. the chosen site, sutro baths, on the western coast of san francisco, is the remnants of an old privately-owned swimming facility that was burned and abandoned in 1966. what remains today are the ruins of the bath buildings,. the ruins are open for public visitation.

the design calls for a minimal intervention, incorporating glass panels etched with words associated with natural disasters in each “compartment” of the ruins. these panels are highlighted by in-ground lights that glow up above the walls of the decrepid building. this memorial seeks to be more of a “quiet discovery” for the visitor rather than a bold statement.

through countless parti diagrams and quick desk-crits, i discovered the art of conveying meaning through the line. when trying to convey how i see an object or idea as a whole, i realized that instead of seeing the object, my mind quickly focuses on each individual characteristic at varying depths and then moves on to the next, until the whole image is created in my mind’s eye. these are personal explorations of that process, using simple line drawings.

Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Filoli is a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Formerly a grand 654–acre country place, Filoli is operated today as a public garden, cultural center and nature center.Here, I undertook a 3-month internship which progressed into a 6-month apprenticeship. As an intern, I rotated throughout the 16–acre formal garden working two weeks in each area, including the greenhouse area, under the direct supervision of a lead horticulturist. As an apprentice, I did the same rotation in month-long intervals and was given an independent project. During my time at Filoli,I was taught techniques of planting, watering, hedging, fertilizing, mowing, pruning, etc. I was required to operate power equipment, use hand tools, and learn garden and greenhouse plants, weeds and native plants.
