Change, that’s an interestingword. Are you open to change? Many people associate the wordwith often negative words suchas uncertainty, failure, or fear ofthe unknown,
What words do you associatewith change? As a good friend ofmine, Pam Featherstone says, justalter the word change to thewords ‘new approach’, and all of asudden this has a much morepositive outlook. (continued).

YOU may have heard of this phrasebefore. ‘It purports to be a blessing butis, in fact, a curse. To live in ‘uninterestingtimes’ of peace and tranquillity is morelife enhancing than in times of turmoil.
Whilst the nation appears to be split on agreat deal of issues, I think most peoplewould agree we are in interesting times.
The uncertain future of Brexit, politicalupheaval and disarray from the majorpolitical parties, the chance of a furtherScottish referendum, the feeling of a splitnation.
But in terms of our businesses do we needto worry and make rash decisions?
Certainly in terms of tax, I believe theanswer is no. The UK has two years tonegotiate its withdrawal from when Article50 of the Lisbon Treaty is triggered, socertainly in the short term we shouldn’t seeany major tax changes.
In fact over 40 pieces of tax legislation havealready been held up prior to thereferendum until 2017, or possibly shelvedaltogether.
However businesses involved in internationaltrade have some greater short-termchallenges.
Following the vote to leave, Sterling fell10% hitting a 35 year low and whilst wehave seen some recovery the future is farfrom clear.
But most people in business will tell youthat volatility is nothing new, for those thatimport forward Forex deals have long beena way to plan for cash flow and smooth outrisk. For those who export, now is the timeto make hay and take advantage of theopportunities.
What is clear is that good businesspractice, sound planning, understanding
your business model, managing cash flow, andworking with professionalsthat understand your
business will continue tobe good business
practice and helpyou and yourbusiness thrive –whatever thefuture may hold.

(From page 1) Many people worry about the future and thisshapes their behaviour towards it. As MahamtaGhandi said: “The future depends on what youdo today.”
When I think about the past, present andfuture I remember hearing someone say to me,you can only do two things with the past. Youcan celebrate the wins and learn from whatdidn’t go the way you expected it to. Then livetoday as this can influence the future but cannotcontrol it.
Have you ever the rhyme that says, ‘yesterdayis history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present’.
Take ownership for whatever is going on inyour life and business at this moment, accept
responsibility for it and become accountable toachieving your full potential.
Remember, that wherever you are in life, business is the sum total of all the decisions youhave taken to date. Even if you didn’t cause it,you allowed it to happen. Change or ‘newapproach’ take a huge amount of courage andcommitment. As another good friend of mine,Bruce Wilson, said to me years ago commitmentis a NON NEGOTIABLE AGREEMENT.
If you have a strong enough reason why andabsolute conviction in that commitment we canall achieve much more than we ever believedpossible.
Don’t settle for less than you can be or fall intothe trap of mediocrity. Go out and be the bestversion of you that you can be.

TeeJay Dowe is the Founder of Backon Track People Ltd, the companyunder which two very similar andvery distinct businesses run side byside from a little office in Stoke-on-Trent.
BACK on Track Strategies is the business forbusiness owners and their teams. It’s personaldevelopment for business development becauseit’s often personal beliefs, values and confidenceissues in individuals that hold a business backrather than the business knowledge.
TeeJay works with businesses using TalentDynamics and Neurostrategies putting mind setsback on track to create high performing teams.
Her passion though is the other arm of thebusiness, Back on Track Teens. In 2012 TeeJayfound herself in a conference room in Bali, thinking she was there to learn more about TalentDynamics.
When confronted about her purpose for beingthere, she realized that it was more than just aquestion about being in that training – it was aquestion about her purpose for being on theplanet.
Deciding to make a difference proactivelyshe asked for permission to turn TalentDynamics the business tool in to TalentDynamics for Young People – a personaldevelopment pathway for young people todiscover who they really are. To boostconfidence, increase self worth and giveyoung people vison and direction in theirlives and careers.
From the very start TeeJay had a globalvision for the impact this would have onyoung people all around the world. Sheimagined training coaches around theworld to roll this out so that it couldhave a bigger reach that she as oneperson could ever have had.
Within 3 months she trained thefirst UK consultantsin her newprogram. Within 4 months shetrained her first coaches inAustralia and in the last 4and half years has trainedcoaches in the UK,Australia, New Zealand,Canada, America,Thailand, CzechRepublic, Denmark, and France.
‘Back on Track’ goes global
I KNEW straight away that Ian was on adifferent level from other mentors.
He wanted to understand what I was planningfor my business. He made me understand myself, what was holding me back and what mydistractions were. I was a control freak, micro-managing everything and I had to step back andlet the team do their bit.
I had to ask myself: did I want a yacht, to retireat 50, spend more time with kids. What were mytriggers?
A couple of weeks later Ian produced his 90day plan focusing on what he thought were thefive key areas for me to work on. It required alot of self-analysis and work to putthose things into practice. I learned that you haveto focus your mind on process and you have tohave complete trust in your business coach.
Since then turnover gas gone up 20% on lastyear and an extra £30k on the bottom line. Onething Ian wanted was a marketing plan writtenon a single side of A4 and then broken down itothree areas that I could focus on each day. I setabout measuring and recording orders in a more
structured way. I put together our top 50clientsand our top 50 prospects and reallyexamined my customer base, looking at theirrelative strengths and weaknesses and how theycould buy our services more effectively.
The company’s relationship with Ian is on-going. He’s now an integral part of our businessstrategy. He questions what I’m doing and whyim doing it. It stops me from becoming complacent.
What’s interesting about Ian is that he will likenyou to a massive global organisation and you canbreak that down and see how it applies to you.
We have a three year plan now. When I tookover the business from my father it was making£200k a year. I took it to £400k without a planand we now have a plan to take it to a millionpounds in the next three years.

Can degreeapprenticeshipshelp your business?
Greater Manchester Chamber wouldlike to welcome new Chambermember Ian Nicklin to Manchester.Chamber members can access a widerange of services from networking tointernational trade. Below are justtwo examples of the services theChamber provides.
IN THE not too distant past the optionsavailable to a business were to recruit anapprentice or recruit a graduate fromuniversity. Now there is a third option -recruit though a Degree Apprenticeship.
A Degree Apprenticeship is a work-basedlearning qualification that leads to adegree. Rather than being at universityfull-time, this option gives a young personthe opportunity to work as they learn.
The level of university fees and theprospect of student debt means that manytalented students are looking for analternative route to the job andqualification they aspire to. For this reason,Degree Apprenticeships are becomingincreasingly popular.
A typical Degree Apprenticeship candidateis an A-Level student looking for aprofessional career and many businessesare now recruiting through this method toensure they are attracting the bestavailable talent.
Manchester Metropolitan University hasbeen at the forefront of developingDegree Apprenticeships and delivers anumber of qualifications:
l Legal Servicesl Chartered Managementl Digital Technology Solutionsl Chemical Science

I’M currently in training (but not in thesuit!) for a gruelling 650Km bike rideacross Cambodia later this year andwould love to have your support.
It will be a gruelling challenge, to say theleast, but it will also be a gratifying andemotional adventure in aid of anextremely worthy cause.
I’m passionate about supporting thethird world and helping to provide
them with the same opportunitiesand resources we have access toin our own country.
Like any challenge, it will giveme the chance to do even more
for those less blessed, and to meetsome of the people I have been
fortunate enough to support. As partof the trip, I’ll be visiting one of the
projects that third worldentrepreneurs have helped to fund.
Now I haven’t been on a bike for 20years, so this is pushing me wayoutside my comfort zone.
You can help by visiting

Why I work with Ian...“I MET Ian through a half-day taster session and wasreally impressed by theman.
As we started to grow asa company I came torealise that i neededadditional knowledge andskills to take the businessforward.
You have to trustbusiness coach implicityand with Ian that wasnever an issue.
I have now been a clientfor over two years and it’san ongoing relationship.Ian never tells you what todo; he sets you clearobjectives and challengeswhat you do, but ultimatelyit’s up to you. He teaches
good practice inmanagement and forcesyou to challenge the wayyou have traditonally donethings.Within months of working
with Ian I began to seeimprovements. Financially,we are now double the sizewe were at the start, butmore importantly, it’s madea huge difference to mepersonally.
Being a sole director canbe an extremely lonelyprofession, but Ian issomeone I can bounceideas off. ”
