Values Program This week’s focus for our whole school values program is respect. We discuss what respect can look like in our communal spaces, such as walking to the toilets, holding the door open if someone else is exiting the building behind us, and making sure our hands are clean before eating or using learning tools. Lots of dominos have been awarded this week for students demonstrating these positive behaviours throughout the school building.

Supercats Last Wednesday the Geelong Supercats came to Anakie for a basketball clinic. All classes were involved and had so much fun sharing their skills in game situations with the two visiting players. Thank you to Mrs Thompson for organising this exciting visit.

Corio District Athletics Well done to the 6 students who represented Anakie Primary last Wednesday at the Corio District Athletics. Whew! What a busy past fortnight it has been! Our Prep, Year One and Year Two students have had an amazing two weeks with many special events and celebrations. The celebration for 100 Days of School saw the children dress up in a wonderful array of old fashioned clothes and they even enjoyed a delicious cupcake treat. Very well done to the students and their parents/grandparents on the beautiful outfits. This day was very special.

3 Way Conferences How amazing are our students! We had a wonderful day yesterday with students sharing and showcasing their learning progress with their families. I would like to congratulate all students who participated and thank the parents for their attendance. We will see this investment pay off throughout Semester 2 as students continue to take greater ownership of their learning. A big thank you to our teachers for preparing the students and sacrificing time away from their own families last night to support Anakie Primary.

Traffic Management We have been advised that Vic Roads will be installing the new electronic speed signs on Ballan Road prior to the commencement of Term 4. A reminder to everyone that upon dismissal at 3.30pm all students must wait at the front gate until they see that their parent’s car is parked and stationary prior to exiting the gate. The staff carpark must not be used as a drop off/pick up point, and I do encourage the use of the Community House carpark as an alternate pick up point at the end of a busy school day.

the most respectful, responsible and courteous of all. As a staff, we were so proud of all of our children. Well done Prep, One and Two’s!

OSHC Invoices Require Payment We have a number of payments outstanding for our Out of School Hours Care program. Could I please request that these payments are made as soon as possible, or please come in to see me if you require a payment plan?

Art Committee Thank you to Mrs Thompson and the small group of parents who form our Art Show Committee. This is an exciting event for our school and we look forward to showcasing the art work of our students this Semester. The PFA will not be holding a Father’s Day stall this year, as Mrs Thompson and the children have been busy in the Art Room working on Father’s Day gifts for all of our lucky dads/grandfathers/special people. We hope that these gifts will bring lots of happiness.

Art Room Donations The exciting work continues in our Art program. Mrs Thompson has some creative ventures planned for this term and is asking for donations of wool, bubble wrap or buttons. If you have any of these items at home, could you please bring them into the office or see Mrs Thompson on a Wednesday or Friday.

Flag Pole We are thrilled to have received a grant from the State Government to install two new flagpoles. This is great news and will allow us to fly both the Australian and Aboriginal flag at Anakie Primary each day.

Year 3 Camp Our Year 3 students had a wonderful 3 day camp at Airey’s Inlet last week. Both Mrs Goette and the staff from the other MVA schools were very impressed with the level of respect shown by our students in every activity. Great work Year 3’s!

Parent Survey Can I remind parents to please complete the parent survey using the link that has been sent home previously. This feedback is very important to us and not only gives us an idea of how we are travelling, but also what we can do to continue to improve at Anakie Primary. We have copies of the note with the survey link in the foyer area of the office if you have misplaced the original note. Also, see either Karen or I if you require IT support and we can log you onto an electronic device here. It will only take 5 minutes to complete the survey. A big thank you to the parents who have already completed this.

Teeth on Wheels The Teeth on Wheels dental service will be returning to Anakie Primary on Tuesday August 28 to provide students with a free dental check and clean during school hours. Forms are not required for students who accessed the service in Term One, as the service already has these. If your child didn’t participate in the program earlier this year and you would like them to receive a free dental check and clean, please register using the E-form link below. Students who did participate in the program earlier this year will have received a yellow slip indicating this today. https://teethonwheels.com.au/consent-eform

Uniform Orders If you would like to place a uniform order prior to the end of this year, please see Karen in the office in the next fortnight. We have been advised of a price increase for our sports tops from $34.99 to $38.50 (plus GST). This price increase is effective immediately and applies to any new orders.

School Stream App The updated School Stream App is being released this week. You may see a new look to the login screen as a result of this update.

Anakie Trivia Night A reminder that the Anakie Primary School Trivia Night date has been set for Friday October 12. Make sure you save the date for this exciting event! See more information on page 7.

Book Week Next week is Book Week! We will continue with our quality literacy program next week, which will include a book reading from the Lara Library. Next Friday 24th August we have a special day planned to celebrate Book Week. The children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character on this day and participate in a parade at 9.10am. Parents and siblings are very welcome to come along and be a part of this parade, which will take place on the basketball court (weather permitting). Following this the children will participate in a Book Tasting, followed by a day of exciting readings and activities from the 2018 Children’s shortlisted books. Thank you to Mrs Goette for her work in organising this event.

PE News A big thankyou to everyone for participating in the Jump Rope For Heart Jump Off Day on August 1st. It was exciting to see the improvement students made in their skipping skills and tricks during P.E. lessons and also to see lots of students practicing at lunchtimes too. I am proud to announce that we raised a massive $1303 for the Heart Foundation. Well done everyone! Last week we were lucky enough to have Daniella and DeMarcus from the Geelong Super Cats visit us at school to run basketball clinics for each class during PE. They taught us a lot of new skills and everybody had so much fun! This week we received our Coles Sport For Schools Equipment.

Thanks to all the families who brought in their Coles vouchers – it

has allowed us to select a great range of equipment that you will

see students using in PE classes and at lunchtimes.

Don’t forget ... Assembly on Friday afternoon (Parents and grandparents are most welcome, 3.00pm start time in anticipation of another exciting performance). Toni Scott Principal Anakie Primary School A great place to teach and learn!

Anakie Primary School is a community of learners who support and encourage each other to reach their personal goals and be the best they can be.

This is what we have been learning in the P-2 classroom…….in case you missed it! Classroom Corner… Thanks to our superstar students who made our excursion to the zoo a fabulous experience! We had so much fun, learnt about habitats and saw lots of amazing animals on our safari and our walk around the zoo. Congratulations on demonstrating the

Anakie values and making our school so proud!

During Reading Miss Pickering’s group are working on summarising while Mrs Bubb’s group are working on inferencing. In Writing both groups are finishing narratives and moving onto script/play writing. In Mathematics Mrs Bubb’s groups are

working on ‘teen’ and ordinal numbers while Miss Pickering’s group work on location transformations. Our spelling focus is the /oo/ sound with investigations into the spelling choices that make this sound.

Finally thank you to the families who came to the three way conferences and listened to their child share their learning, it was a

wonderful process to be a part of. We are looking forward to Book Week next week and can’t wait to see the characters you come dressed as on Friday 24th!

What the 5/6 classroom has been up to…….. In Reading we are building our comprehension through group discussions. Each member of the group has a role – Predictor, Summariser, Clarifier or Questioner. After reading an agreed section of their group novel the students discuss elements of the passage. After some great results with our unit on time we have changed our focus to Length. Students have completed a pre-test and will now set goals for the unit ahead. Plenty of hands-on learning and calculations to come. Great to see so many parents supporting the students with the 3-way conferences. I’m a proud teacher lucky enough to be teaching some very motivated and confident students. It is rewarding to see the effort they are putting in is translating into achievement of learning goals. Attendance update: 100% attendance days – 32 out of a possible 114. Assembly presenters this week: Annalise and Shanaed

What you might have missed in Year 3/4 Well, what a fantastic week we have had. Congratulations to all students who presented the great work we have been doing in class to their parents. Last week was a busy one with the Year 3’s on camp and the Supercats players here for a basketball clinic. Next week is Book Week and I am looking forward to seeing the children’s costumes and the day filled with great book activities. In Literacy we have been working on writing a procedural text, of which some are coming along nicely. We have a variety of topics to learn about such as ‘How to make a stinky sandwich’ and ‘How to build a fort’. I look forward to seeing the end product and testing out a few of the procedures. Our focus in Reading this fortnight is making connections to what we have read. There are 3 types of connections that we can make; they are text to self, text to text and text to world. Mathematics has seen us change from multiplication to division, which is the inverse operation. Students have been sharing out counters, money and minutes to solve word problems. In Inquiry we are well underway in building our balloon powered cars and testing will soon begin. We have also been looking at the different types of forces and how we can use this to make our car travel further.

In Maths, we have been learning units of measurement. Here’s a fun fact … did you know

that your forearm and your foot are within 3 cm of each other in length (otherwise you may not be

human … !)

Keep up the great work everyone.
