Prelude

Opening Prayer, Confession, and The Lord's Prayer (using debts, debtors)

A Time for Children

Hymn (Instrumental) Great is Thy FaithfulnessGreat is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;

there is no shadow of turning with thee.Thou changest not; thy compassions they fail not.

As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

(Refrain:) Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!Morning by morning, new mercies I see.

All I have needed thy hand hath provided.Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

*Affirmation of Faith (from The Heidelberg Catechism, Question 1)2 Q. 1. What is your only comfort, in life and in death?

A. That I belong—body and soul, in life and in death—not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

Lord, I trust thee, I adore thee.Ah! thou friend of man, restore me!

When the breath of life has left me,May my soul be blended with thee.

whose arm has bound the restless wave,who bade the mighty ocean deep

its own appointed limits keep:O hear us when we cry to thee

for those in peril on the sea.

O Trinity of love and power,all travelers guard in danger's hour;from rock and tempest, fire and foe,protect them wheresoe'er they go;

thus evermore shall rise to theeglad praise from air and land and sea.

1 WorShiP: We are filled with joy and thanksgiving for the gift of being able to gather together again for worship, with appropriate safety measures in place. Although worship has taken a different shape during this time, we are grateful for your understanding as we work our way through this season of transition. Our safety protocol for on-site worship can be found on the back of the bulletin. The text for the hymns and anthem have been included so that we may read or hum along in the spirit of worship.

2 Published in 1563, The heidelBerg cATechiSm was written to unite the Lutheran and Reformed churches of that era, who had been bitterly divided over the meaning of Christ’s presence in the Lord’s Supper.

3 locAl relief looSe PlATe offering: Second Presbyterian has created a Local Relief Fund in response to the economic impact of COVID-19. All funds col-lected will be given to local ministries meeting essential needs of our community, with particular emphasis on basic utilities and food. Funds are distributed weekly so as to have an immediate impact. To donate, designate a check or online gift to “Local Relief.” Donations can be placed in receptacles in the Narthex and Kirk Hall. Over the past two weeks, $4,370.00 was collected and distributed evenly to the Presbyterian Community Center and Roanoke Area Ministries for rent and utility payments for their clients in need. Since the crisis began, we have donated $23,224.00 to local relief.

4 mArk 4:35-41: 35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
