Our missionThe CHI Saint Joseph Health Foundations aim to put kindness into action. Our work focuses on the people we need to reach the most – our youth and under-served communities that need help but often lack the voice and resources to ask for it. Your investment in humankindness brings services, programs, equipment, research and more to your community.

Because of you, parents of preemies don’t have to worry because our hospitals have critical equipment to care for them. Because of you, breast cancer is caught earlier with 3D mammography. Because of you, cardiac care is better than ever. Because of you, our loved ones are living longer, healthier lives full of hope.

A rich heritageIn early 2019, our healthcare organization was rebranded to become CHI Saint Joseph Health – a name that reflects the rich heritage and renewal of a commitment to the caring and innovative legacy of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

CHI Saint Joseph Health is one of the largest and most comprehensive health systems in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. We consist of 135 locations in 20 counties, including hospitals, physician groups, clinics, primary care centers, specialty institutes and home health agencies. In total, the health system serves patients in 35 Kentucky counties. The foundation for this work was laid in 1877 by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth when they opened the Saint Joseph Infirmary in Lexington. The infirmary grew and changed and later became Saint Joseph’s Hospital.

At CHI Saint Joseph Health, we are dedicated to building healthier communities by elevating patient care through an integrated physical and behavioral health delivery system. We are guided by our strong mission and faith-based heritage and work through local partnerships to expand access to care in the communities we serve.

CHI Saint Joseph Health is part of CommonSpirit Health, a nonprofit, Catholic health system dedicated to advancing health for all people. It was created in February 2019 through the alignment of Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health. CommonSpirit Health is committed to creating healthier communities, delivering exceptional patient care, and ensuring every person has access to quality health care.

How funds are raisedAt the CHI Saint Joseph Health Foundations, a diverse group of donors supports our ministry through a variety of ways—annual donations, grants, planned and estate gifts, and attending events. We, and the patients we serve, are forever grateful. Donations, both large and small, enable the foundations to provide cutting-edge technology, build and support health education and community outreach programs, and support those who cannot afford the costs of health care.

Your kindness in action

Lexington family brings hope to families experiencing infant lossAvery Elizabeth Black was born into Heaven on July 27, 2017 at the Women’s Hospital at CHI Saint Joseph East. After arriving at the hospital to be induced at 40 weeks and 3 days, Katie and Bryan were told their precious daughter had passed away.

In the wake of such devastation they found a shining light in Debbie Gibbons, RN and the hospital’s bereavement department, who helped make their loss as bearable as they could.

Katie and Bryan are passionate about keeping Avery’s memory alive and assisting other families who are experiencing the same unimaginable, devastating loss.

In her memory, Katie and Bryan donated funds to rename the fountain at the Women’s Hospital, the Avery Elizabeth Fountain of Remembrance, dedicated to all the babies who have left us too soon.

The funds donated by the Black family will be utilized by the bereavement department to provide additional support and compassionate services for families experiencing infant loss.

Katie and Bryan hope to make the donation an annual gift in memory of Avery.

“The gift from the Avery Elizabeth Foundation will allow us to minister to other families and provide compassionate care at all stages of loss,” Gibbons said. “I am so thankful that Katie and Bryan have allowed Avery to spur them on to helping others and for letting us be a part of their healing.

This includes miscarriages from Saint Joseph Mount Sterling, Flaget Memorial Hospital, Saint Joseph Berea, and Saint Joseph Hospital, and miscarriages at home or other facilities that do not offer this service.

On July 12, 2018, Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation Board member Jeffrey Liles woke up with a really bad heartburn. He drank a Sprite, but it didn’t make any difference. He took some Pepto Bismol, but it didn’t help. Based on information about heart attack and stroke he had seen working with the Montgomery County Health Department, he decided to go to the Emergency Department at Saint Joseph Mount Sterling, even though he didn’t have any of the classic symptoms – sweats, shortness of breath, tingling arms, chest pain.

“I figured the worst thing that would happen would be that I would go and get stronger heartburn medication,” he said.At the Emergency Department, he learned he was having a heart attack. Within two hours, he was in a room at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington and received a stent. He had a 70 percent blockage in the left anterior artery.

Liles praised Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Hospital staff for being so quick to figure out what was going on and address the situation.

“I can’t imagine the process having gone any smoother than it did or any quicker or any better coordination between the different groups from the doctor and nurses and other staff…” Liles said.

Hope for Newborns in LondonIn 2018, we launched a fundraising initiative to open a NICU in the Birthing Center at Saint Joseph London. The NICU is critical to the community, where there’s a growing need for newborns to receive specialized care in their community, where their parents can be close to them.

The Saint Joseph London Gala for Hope held in February 2019 raised nearly $50,000 for the NICU and launched the initiative.

Getting Better sleep in BereaThe Saint Joseph Berea Sleep Wellness Center reopened in December 2018 after nearly two years thanks to a nearly $40,000 donation from the Saint Joseph Berea Foundation. This support helps the facility offer enhanced sleep study services.

“We are thrilled to be able to make this purchase to bring this valuable service back to the Berea community.”

Leslie Smart, CFRE President, Saint Joseph Berea Foundation

Spreading JoyJim Roby of Bardstown says that the Flaget Memorial Hospital Cancer Center is the reason he’s alive today.

“It’s hard to put into words what it means to have your life saved,” said Jim, a colon cancer survivor. “And the Cancer Center team did that.”

Jim is now an advocate for the Flaget Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Project Hope initiative to raise $1.2 million to expand hospital’s Cancer Center.

Thanks to his support and many others in the community, more than $850,000 has been donated for Project Hope – the most the Foundation has ever raised from donors in the community – and the initiative is nearly complete. This support includes three $50,000 donations, the largest gifts the Foundation has ever received from a local business or individual.

In addition, the Bourbon industry has embraced Project Hope, and two of the local distilleries have hosted an annual Bourbon & Bluegrass Holiday Bash to support Project Hope. In 2018, the Bash raised $140,000.

Part of this support allowed the Foundation in 2018 to purchase 3D mammography for Flaget Memorial Hospital. The equipment has screened nearly 3,000 women and caught 28 cancers early, when it’s at its easiest to treat.

Now, the hospital faces a critical need to expand its Cancer Center. Flaget’s Cancer Center opened in 2010 and served around a dozen patients a day; now, it sees as many as 60 patients a day in the same space. The expansion will add five infusion rooms, a compound pharmacy, and a private resource center.

Now, more people like Jim Roby will be able to find hope in their community without facing the burden of traveling an hour to the second closest treatment center.

“I was given two years to live by a doctor in Louisville,” said Jim, who is a seven-year survivor. “At Flaget, I found hope.”

Helping Children in London, KentuckyA CHI Mission & Ministry Fund grant of $286,770 for 2016-2019 enabled incredible community awareness around child abuse and safety including:

• Education to prenatal, NICU and substance abuse effected families

• Recordable books for mothers in the Laurel County Correctional Center to send their children

• Child abuse education to 623 students

• A community event attended by more than 600 people during Child Abuse Awareness Month

We couldn’t do this without you Dear Friends,

The CHI Saint Joseph Health Foundations had an incredibly successful year, thanks to you.

From new, high-tech equipment that catches breast cancer early in Bardstown to a Sleep Wellness Center in Berea, your support is at work bringing health and hope to people in your community. In London, we launched a fundraising initiative for a NICU that will keep our tiniest patients close to home, and in Lexington we are getting closer to a much-needed Emergency Department refresh. In Mount Sterling, the birthing center team has new hearing screening equipment for newborns, and cancer patients have new infusion chairs.

Your support is at work in your community. We are grateful.

We have much to celebrate, but more work is ahead. As we look forward to another great year, we are filled with gratitude for all you’ve done to make healthcare in our community stronger than ever.

Sincerely,

Leslie Buddeke Smart, CFREPresident, CHI Saint Joseph Health Foundations
