“We do not tell or impose our will on God; in silence like Mary, we await an Annunciation.”

Venerable Fulton J. Sheen

Mass Confusion???

The Prayer Over the Offerings

“I appeal to you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1). To conclude the Preparation of the Gifts, the priest appeals to the assembly: “Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.” Called to pray, the people stand and make their response, holding themselves in readiness for the Mystery about to unfold. The Mass engages not the priest alone, nor the people apart from the priest, but the people offering with the priest and through his ministry. “The celebration of the Eucharist is an action of the whole Church, and in it each one should carry out solely but completely that which pertains to him or her, in virtue of the rank of each within the People of God” (GIRM, art. 5).

The Prayer Over the Offerings follows. It asks God to receive the offerings set before him and to give us, in exchange, the surpassing gift of himself. The faithful, uniting themselves to this prayer, make it their own by sealing it with the acclamation, Amen.

In May 2018, Bishop Robert Baker designated a Year of Saint Joseph. The year ends on May 1, 2019. This year has been designated in preparation for the Eucharistic Congress in June 2019 when the Diocese of Birmingham will celebrate its 50th anniversary. For the Year of Saint Joseph, Pope Francis has granted a Plenary Indulgence to the diocese. Bishop Robert Baker designated Annunciation of the Lord as an approved shrine for this plenary indulgence.

To gain the Plenary Indulgence for the Year of Saint Joseph, the following should be done: 1. Visit one of the approved shrines and spend a suitable amount of time in prayer before a statue or an image

of Saint Joseph there. Annunciation of the Lord is an approved shrine. The parish has an image of Saint Joseph with the Holy Family in the main church next to the confessional.

2. Conclude this time of prayer by praying an Our Father and an approved Creed (for example, the Apostles’ Creed or the Nicene Creed). The Nicene Creed and the Apostles’ Creed can be found in English and Spanish in the missalettes in the church.

3. Pray an invocation to the Holy Family (for example, “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, bless my family.) 4. Pray for the Holy Father’s intentions. This condition may be satisfied by reciting one “Our Father” and one

“Hail Mary.” 5. Be detached from all sin, including venial sin. 6. Receive Holy Communion in the state of grace within at least 20 days before or after the time spent in

prayer before the image of Saint Joseph at Annunciation. 7. Go to Confession within at least 20 days before or after the time spent in prayer before the image of Saint

Joseph at Annunciation.

A member of the faithful who goes to daily Mass/communion and at least monthly confession can therefore receive this plenary indulgence up to once a day. One confession can cover multiple attempts to receive an indulgence.

A Special Thank You

A Heartfelt thank you to all who offered prayers and/or sent cards and special notes letting me know that you were thinking and praying for me. I am filled with overwhelming gratitude to each of you who reached out in so many ways to me during my Rehab stay. I know that it was your prayers that helped me to recover so quickly.

There are so many of you to whom I owe so much; I can only ask our Heavenly Father to reward you and your families with abundant blessings.

I think the Post Office in Cullman had to add extra staff in order to handle all the mail that had to be delivered to Sacred Heart Monastery every day.

Stewardship

While Jesus planned to slip away from the crowds for some peace and quiet, he put his needs aside to meet the needs of the gathering crowd. Sometimes, as good stewards, we are called to do the same.
