Page Three 4th Sunday of Advent
Sometimes it seems that babies pick the most inconvenient hours of a day in which to be born. They seem to
delight in awakening their parents in the middle of the night for that hurried trip to the hospital and that happy celebration of a new life. In this regard, the baby Jesus was no exception. Of course, there was no trip to a hospital. But the records do show that His birth took place in the middle of the night. When Joseph and Mary arrived in Bethlehem, they found the place of lodging filled to capacity, suggesting that other travelers had already stopped for the night. The shepherds, who first heard the glad announcement of His birth, were out in the fields, “keeping night watch over their flock”. Our most familiar Christmas carol celebrates the same theme: “Silent Night, holy night…”. This message that Jesus was born at night is more than historic. It is also symbolic. The darkness of the hour serves as a backdrop for the radiance of His life. In our Gospel reading for Christmas Day, St. John thought of Jesus and thought of this world, and brought the two together in this one sentence: “the light shines on in darkness, a darkness that did not overcome it”. He is telling us that the possibility of a radiant life in a dark world is a proven fact. Here is one of the marvels of history, not that the world is dark – it has always been – but that one life, that of Jesus Himself could shine so bright in the midst of all that is darkness. Why do we gather in Church on Christmas Day? The answer to that question is not hard to find. “The light shines on in darkness, a darkness that did not overcome it”. Does the kind of life for which Jesus stood have any kind of chance in this kind of world today? That question is no longer debatable. It has been answered, not by an argument, but by Jesus Himself. He lived it well. He lighted a candle as it were. He kindled a flame that all the darkness of evil and doubt has not nor will be able to extinguish – a radiant light who is Jesus has come into the darkness of this world, But St. John went on to describe Jesus as “the real light which gives light to every person”. In other words, the same radiance that shined through Jesus can also shine through you and me. Jesus lived a radiant life in a dark world and has taught us that so can we. So Jesus’ way of life is not only beautiful and admirable, it is also repeatable. Our 21st century world awaits the coming of that radiant light. Jesus’ desire is not so much to be worshiped as to be followed! We do Jesus a disservice this Christmas, if all we do is place Him in a manger under our Christmas tree. His place is not in a manger under a tree but in our hearts and lives – in the thick of our daily life. He has shown us the way that all of us should follow. He has laid a foundation that each of us can build upon. In this Advent season, we pause to remember that Jesus is the light of our lives and of the world. But we also need to remember that the same one who said, “I am the light of the world”, also said, “You are the light of the world”. As we approach Christmas Day remember, the light that shined through Jesus also must shine through us. Then there truly will be ‘peace on earth and good will to all”.
Ministry Corner
“I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you received
me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me. I tell you, indeed, whenever you did this for one of the least of my people, you did it
for me.” (Matthew 25:35-36,40)
The Pastoral Care Ministry welcomes all who would have time to help the elderly, sick and
homebound by listening, understanding, praying with them, bringing Holy Communion, doing simple chores, preparing a meal, driving to Church or a
doctor. Call Sr. Cathy in the Rectory at 914-779-7345 or more information.
Where is God calling You to serve?
FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT First Reading: Micah 5:1-4a Micah speaks of the ruler who will come from Bethlehem. He discusses how the people of Israel will be saved from corruption and live in peace. Second Reading: Hebrews 10:5-10 Paul describes to the Hebrews how Jesus came into the world and offered to do God's will. We were saved through his sacrifice, the only offering sufficient for the sins of the world. Gospel: Luke 1:39-45 Mary paid a visit to Elizabeth, whose baby stirred in her womb upon hearing Mary's greeting. Elizabeth filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb." Elizabeth was deeply overjoyed that the words God had spoken to Mary had now been fulfilled.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Religious Ed Notices for Sunday, Dec 20th
Religious Education Classes will resume the week of January 4th.
Families interested in learning more about our Religious
Education program for children with special needs should contact Doreen Napolitano at
[email protected] or 779-2374. Classes are held either Tuesday or Thursday afternoon at the Fatima

Our Family Advent Program Continues! After the 10AM Family Mass this week, families are invited
to the Lower Church to collect the 3 Magi figurines that complete the Nativity scene. Over 60 families participated in our Family Advent Program. A big “thank you” goes to
the Confirmation candidates who volunteered their time to help make this program a success.
Advent is our time to prepare for Christ coming into our hearts anew. He calls us to renew our faith and show it with our actions. It’s a call to prayer and to service. Here in our Parish, there are many opportunities to grow in prayer and to serve in ministry. As we prepare for the Christ child, let
us consider how we can help.
The Youth Ministry of Annunciation-Our Lady of Fatima Church will be sponsoring a TV Raffle to support St. Peter’s
Roman Catholic Church’s Food Pantry in South West Yonkers this weekend of December 19th and 20th. The Food Pantry is vital to the people and parishioners of St. Peter’s for weekly

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
“Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, but who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby stirred in my womb for joy. Blessed is she who trusted that the Lord’s words to her would be fulfilled.” At this time of the year people fill the airports, travel the highways, and spend time visiting relatives and friends. It is a time to come together to share special moments, life and love. How true it was with the visitation of Mary to the house of Zechariah and the meeting of the two pregnant women. A special moment takes place with the encounter of John and the unborn Christ. We continually recite the recorded words of Elizabeth when we pray the Hail Mary. We honor her with a scripture quote. Her question of awe and wonder follows… ‘But who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me?’ Pope Francis insists that to be a disciple, we must, like John, encounter Jesus. We find Him in history, but He lives history with us today. We too turn to him, learn more about Him, and then we too go out to announce our experience to others. This is the joy of the gospel which we will celebrate before this week ends. Go back to the home of Elizabeth, listen to the conversation, reflect on its meaning in our present day, in your home, and make this fourth week of advent memorable.
