itself. The marble verde bars that bound each webpage are actual shots of the marble behind the upstairs altar. I have always felt that the An-nunciation Church is a beauti-ful structure inside as well as out, full of easily overlooked details, whether it be its stained glass windows or the weighty brass candle stick holders on the altar. When I did the photography, I paid particular attention to those details -- to showcase them as much as I could”.

T h e w e b s i t e , www.annunciationcrestwood.com, is an up-to-date, solid source of both historical and current information.

Click on the “Education” tab, and you’ll be taken to the School’s website, which has been completely updated to

include not only the stan-dard offerings of tuition costs and educational phi-losophy, but now covers aspects of student activities, awards and honors won by current students and an alumni page that provides contact details for upcom-ing reunions.

But, how about that class-mate that you haven’t seen in years? The Internet has free offerings to help you in that quest, and Annuncia-tion School pops up in many of those places. One of the most popular web-sites these days is www.Facebook.com. If you are an Annunciation graduate, Facebook has two on l ine Annunc i a t i on groups, each with over 200 members that you can join.

One example of an An-nunciation connection that has been made on the Inter-

net is the experience of Frank Doherty, former member of the class of 1975, who now resides in Knoxville, TN. Frank, who joined Facebook on New Year’s Day, typed in the word “Annunciation” and was connected to a group of Annunciation graduates. He scrolled through the list of names looking for nobody in par-ticular. What caught his eye was the college affilia-tion of one of its mem-bers, Ryan McCombe ‘04.

Recognizing Ryan’s last name, Frank sent off a quick email to a former classmate with the same name to see if they were related. Not only did he discover that Ryan McCombe was the son of Mary Theresa Gill ‘75, but he learned that Ryan was a freshman at Washington

Dear Alumni,

Happy Easter! May the risen Lord bestow many blessings upon you and your families!

As we move into the last few months of this 2008-2009 school year, I am reminded of the faith-filled and vibrant parish/school community of which we are a part. During the month of May, we look forward to our 2nd graders receiving their First Holy Communion and our 7th graders receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. We also eagerly anticipate our 8th grade graduation in June. Our 8th graders will offi-cially become alumni and an important part of our history.

Please come back and visit your Alma Mater! You, too, will always be an important part of our history.

God bless you.

Sincerely,

Internet Connections

Letter from the Pastor

Dear Annunciation Alumni,

The earth is alive with the fullness of God’s spirit – how true these words are each year with the beauty of spring. Our Church is also alive with the fullness of God’s spirit. The Easter celebration reminds each of us of God’s great love for us – He suffered, died, and rose to life so that we may share in His eternal life. Our parish is also so alive – we have celebrated First Holy Communion and Confirma-tion. Our young people were nourished by God’s spirit and we thank God for that.

Be assured of my prayers for all the graduates and families of Annunciation. May the Lord bless you and keep you all safe.

University in St. Louis. Frank was curious – what were the odds that Ryan knew his son, also named Frank, since both were freshman at the same univer-sity and both had a Crest-wood connection? A few quick emails between Frank and his son and Mary Theresa and her son and it was clear – the boys had known each other since the start of school, having both been in a class and a study group together in the engi-neering school! Yet, the boys themselves did not even realize their Crestwood connection and never had reason to suspect that their parents had known each other as youngsters at An-nunciation!

The next time you are surf-ing the Internet, see what kinds of Annunciation con-nections you can make!

and had dived in the Baha-mas and Turks and Caicos, was not dissuaded by those who told him that it was nearly impossible to pass the required tests to be assigned to this unit. Only 28 of 37,000 NYPD officers are assigned to the scuba team. The grueling physical and written tests are designed to ensure that only those who can perform at their peak under pressure come out on top.

The scuba team is based in two locations. The first is at the Brooklyn Army Termi-nal, where four divers are assigned to a boat. The sec-ond location is the Air Sea Rescue Unit at Floyd Ben-nett Field in Brooklyn, where two divers are always ready to be helicoptered to a call. Divers rotate between these assignments. Handling res-cues as their primary respon-sibility, the team also handles security sweeps, evidence work and recovery.

But none of these everyday responsibilities could have prepared Michael for what he was about to see when Captain Chesley Sullenber-

ger, III, used his skills at gliding to guide his plane into a splash landing in the middle of the Hudson River just off 56th Street in Man-hattan. Within minutes, Mi-chael and his partner, Robert Rodriguez, were in the air hovering over what had al-ready become a huge rescue effort being conducted by private and public ferries.

With so much boat activity at the crash scene, the heli-copter could not get down to the 5-10 feet above the water from which the divers usu-ally jump. Instead, because there was concern that the rotor wash would push some of the rescue boats into the victims, the copter held steady about 15 or so feet above the surface, while Mi-chael jumped into the water to rescue a woman who was clinging to a ferry but lacked the strength to pull herself out of the water. After res-cuing another woman from the icy river, Michael swam to the airplane’s wing to as-sess the situation and then dove into the plane, which was filling with water, to search the interior for vic-tims.

Michael says it was just luck that had him assigned to the aviation unit that day. “This is what we train for. This is what we do. If I had-n’t been on duty at the time, I would have seen the report and immediately driven to work. You hear what has happened and you know. That is the type of squad we are. We all want to be there to help.”

Asked how his family has

responded to his job and his fifteen minutes of fame, Michael says “My parents are very proud. They were away at the time, but they probably got more phone calls than I did. My mother loves that I can save lives and help people out, and my father, as a retired NYPD officer, is also happy about my choice of work.” Mi-chael’s brother, Timothy ‘86, lives in Charlotte, NC (ironically the destination of the ill-fated flight) where he works for a bank. His sis-ter, Meg Delaney Blaney ‘87, is a physical education teacher at The Ursuline School.

Despite the media spot-light that has resulted from this rescue, Michael says the best thing that has come from it has been his receipt of The Chuck Barris “Cop of the Year” Award in early March, which goes to the Police Officer of the Year, a tremendous honor within the ranks of the NYPD. “Everyone wants to hear the story of what happened that day, but to me, it is all in a day’s work. It was a thrill to be recognized for that work.” Another special

Plane Crash

event was when Michael was able to meet Captain Sullenberger in Los Angeles at the events surrounding the Academy Awards. They had not had a chance to meet prior to that day, and Michael was thrilled for the opportunity to speak with him.

Michael continues to get interview requests. Most recently, he says, The Dis-covery Channel has been in contact about a story they are planning on the plane crash. He recently spoke to sophomores at Iona Prep and is looking forward to going back there to speak at a career focused event. Mi-chael says that coming back to Crestwood frequently, as he does to see his parents, reminds him of what a “great sense of community we have here.” He is not surprised that many gradu-ates choose to return here to raise their families and send their children to An-nunciation. He says it would be within the realm of possibilities for him too some day. For now, what brings him back is usually the promise of a good home-cooked meal!

money for CF research. An-nie had been diagnosed at the age of one and a half, and she was three years old when the first plunge took place. The Rockaway location was cho-sen because of Theresa's close ties to Rockaway Beach and the outstanding support of the Rockaway commu-nity. The inaugural plunge consisted of fifty people and raised a total of $19,000. This year’s plunge consisted o f f o u r t i m e s t h a t many individuals brave enough to don a bathing suit and jump into the 38 degree water on a 40 degree day, raising over $100,000 in sponsorships. In addition, another $30,000 was raised during the after party held at St. Camillus Gym on Beach 99th Street in Rockaway Park. For a $40 donation, “Land Lovers” were welcome to join “Plungers” for an open bar, food, raffles and fun. A DJ livened things up and helped those experiencing frigid extremities to get the blood circulating again.

Not surprisingly, the An-nunciation community came out strong for Annie this year. Twenty of Annie’s sixth grade classmates dove into

the icy waters to raise money to help find a cure for their friend. Crestwood neighbors and friends jumped into the water in what has become a family affair for many. An-nie’s neighbors Patrick ’96, Sean ’00 and Ryan O’Connor ‘03 joined their father, Jim, in plunging into the Atlantic – with Jim wearing a kilt in-stead of a bathing suit! The O’Connor family’s hard work at fundraising raised over $30,000, earning them the distinction of being the top fundraisers. Annunciation graduates and parishioners alone raised $65,000 of the total for the day.

John says that the support of his parish and neighbor-hood is important to his fam-ily because Annie is able to participate in Cheerleading, b a s k e t b a l l , t r a c k ,

and volleyball. This would not have been possible with-out all the new therapies that are available today. “It is because of our very gener-ous families and friends, who work so hard to raise money for CF that she is able to do all of this. We are over-whelmed and amazed year after year at the never ending support we receive from our community. It because of them that we know one day CF will stand for CURE FOUND!”

For more pictures from this year’s plunge, and a link to Fox 5’s news coverage of the event, go to the website www.rockawayplunge.com. And keep your eye on the website to participate in next year’s plunge on Febru-ary 6, 2010.

On June 13, Annunciation will graduate 52 students. We have a lot to be proud of in these soon to be newly minted alumni. The gradu-ates were accepted to ten different Catholic and pri-vate high schools.

In September, three boys will attend Archbishop

Stepinac, ten will attend Fordham Preparatory School, four will attend Iona Preparatory School, and one will attend Hackley School

The girls’ decisions will result in eleven girls attend-ing Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel, one to Do-

minican Academy, three to School of the Holy Child, three to Maria Regina, three to Our Lady of Victory Academy and thirteen to The Ursuline School.

In addition to acceptance at these high school, Annuncia-tion’s graduates were awarded over twenty-one scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $40,000 over four years.

New Graduates Select High Schools

Who jumps into the Atlantic Ocean in February in Rock-away? It seems that a good por-tion of Crestwood did, and among them were more than fifty Annunciation students and graduates. On Saturday, Febru-ary 9, two hundred people par-ticipated in “The Plunge” to raise money to help fight Cystic Fibrosis. Another three hun-dred people cheered them on (but didn’t put on a bathing suit!). And the reason all these people did this crazy thing is because they all know and love Annie McMahon, daughter of Theresa and John McMahon ‘78 (niece of Brenda ’75 and Maura ’76), who is a sixth grade student at Annunciation and who suffers from this disease.

As you may know, Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that affects more than 30,000 children and adults in the United States. It is a fatal generic dis-ease which causes chronic lung infections. Currently there is no cure, but funds raised for CF research have produced new drugs and therapies that have raised the average life span of a CF sufferer from 18 years in 1980 to over 36 years today.

Nine years ago, Theresa and John conceived of "The Plunge" as a great way to raise more

ITV Broadcast Spotlights the Economy Annunciation’s 7th and 8th grade ITV team taped a broadcast for the Instruc-tional Television Program of the Archdiocese of New York on the topic “Money Matters: Some Perspective on the Financial Crisis”. This program was broadcast throughout the Archdiocese on February 5, 2009. The team consisted of three 8th graders and eleven 7th grad-ers.

Under the instruction of Assistant Principal Melissa Hollywood and 8th grade teacher Mrs. Mary Ellen Elli-ott, the team began with an introduction of the broad-cast’s contents by Kathryn C u c u z z a a n d K e l s e y Buongiorno. The results of a survey of 7th and 8th graders was presented next by Kiera Fellegara and Emily Kennedy. This was followed by a debate between Erika Moffa and

Thomas Heubel on the merits of increasing or low-ering taxes in this economy.

Molly Tobin and Emma Soderquist presented a seg-ment comparing the Great Depression to today’s eco-nomic turmoil. The girls also discussed the top ten reasons for overspending as identified on the website accumulatingmoney.com. Fi-nally, Pierce Butler and Shane Mulligan interviewed two Annunciation 7th grad-

ers, Nicola Breen and Sa-brina Sabio, about the way this economy has impacted their lives. While Nicola stated that she “looks for better deals while shop-ping”, Sabrina “cuts back on recreational activities such as going to the mov-ies”. Behind the scenes, E l i z a b e t h O ' T o o l e , Amanda Giglio and Noah Kilduff provided research to the team.

Annunciation’s Junior Girl Scouts of Troop 1740 earned the Silver Award - the second high-est award in Girl Scouts – on October 26, 2008. To earn this award, each girl first completed the Girl Scout Leadership Pro-ject, Girl Scout Career Project, and Girl Scout 4Bs Challenge. After meeting the initial require-ments, the girls embarked on a year-long service project which included organizing a Girl Scout Spirit Day, helping in the bridg-ing of a Daisy Troop to a Brownie Troop, working at the Crestwood Fall Festival, and vol-unteering at St. Patrick’s Nursing Home.

For their service project, the girls decided to address the issue of support for the service men

and women fighting in the war in Iraq. The girls organized col-lections of food items, toiletries, and other necessities for Ma-rines, as well as toys, stuffed animals, and games for Iraqi children. Over fifty large care packages weighing more than 400 pounds were shipped to Camp Fallujah, Iraq, where Lt. Colonel Walter Powers ’81 was stationed on his second tour of duty.

Along with the care packages for the soldiers and toys for the Iraqi children, the girls sent an American flag which was flown over the American base in Camp Fallujah before being gifted to Annunciation School by the Marines.

outing could continue to be held at Leewood in a similar format, and that changes could be made in some areas that might improve its overall fundraising capability. Work-ing with his committee, changes were made to the underwriting and sponsorship opportunities, raffles were revamped under the guidance of Terrence Fay, who had moved back to Crestwood in 2003, and auctions were intro-duced. Tommy says that each person who works on the committee brings their own special skill to the process, and

the goal was to capitalize on the variety of skills.

The Golf Outing is not only a day of fun and camaraderie for the Men’s Club members and other parishioners, but it is the funds that are raised for the Pastor’s Scholarship that bring the most benefit. Created as a source of financial aid for mem-bers of the Annunciation School family whose circum-stances change and financial hardship might prevent them from being able to finish their Annunciation education, the Pastor’s scholarship bridges the gap. Over the past five years, the money generated by the

golf outing has covered about seventy percent of the aid that has been needed.

Monsignor Dennis Keane, Pas-tor of Annunciation, says that Annunciation’s Men’s Club “is perhaps one of the most active Men’s Clubs throughout the Archdiocese. Each year they sponsor many different events. And each year the Golf Outing sells out. From morning to eve-ning, the time is marked by friendship and congeniality. We are fortunate to have graduates of

our School on the Golf Com-mittee. They know first hand the value of our School and work hard to make this outing successful. This is the proud tradition of Annunciation – to hand to the next generation the values of being involved in our Parish community’s life.”

This year’s outing, which is already sold out, will be held on June 1. If you’d like to join the golfers for the dinner portion of the evening, please call Tommy at 914-961-7976.

Currently one of the fastest growing recreational youth sports, students at Annun-ciation had to travel to other towns to be able to play. (In 2008, Hillcrest Lakers expanded their programs to include lacrosse, resulting in a tremendous increase in the number of Annunciation students playing the sport.)

Entering high school – Nick and Gus at Iona Prep and Chris at Fordham Prep – all three boys were identi-fied by their high school coaches as extremely tal-ented. All three played football for their high schools as well as varsity lacrosse from their fresh-man year. Gus and Chris both were members of their respective wrestling teams.

By sophomore year, their talents in their respective positions were well known and colleges were scouting

While Annunciation fields seventeen basketball teams, two cheerleading teams, four baseball teams and two softball teams, the sport of lacrosse is not something that is part of the school’s Athletic Program, yet three graduates from the Class of 2005 will be attending Divi-sion 1 colleges to play la-crosse.

Gus Guido, Chris Moffa and Nick Trizano began playing lacrosse with White Plains and then with the Eastchester Blue Devils.

them. Gus plays attackman/midfielder, Nick is an attack-man and Chris is a goal keeper. The boys had to learn the ins and outs of NCAA recruiting rules. Official vis-its, unofficial visits, game tapes sent to coaches, meet-ings with college representa-tives, and playing games knowing that scouts were in the stands were some of the stresses the boys had to han-dle along with playing as part of a team and juggling their studies. It takes a delicate balance to play as a team member knowing that you want to impress a college scout. Do you pass the ball to your teammate or do you take the shot yourself?

Gus, who was recruited by Stevens Tech, Nazareth, and University of Hartford., will enroll in the business school at Hartford, where he is con-sidering studying accounting.

Both the Men’s Club and the Ladies Guild play vital roles in fundraising for Annunciation School and support of our parish. Each has their particular and spe-cial events. The Super Bowl party and decorating the church at Christmas are the responsibilityi-esof the Men’s Club. The Palm Sunday bake sale and Breakfast with Santa are specialties of the Ladies Guild.

But no one single event has been an Annunciation tradition as long as the Men’s Club Golf Out-ing which is in its 28th year. Usu-ally held the first Monday in June at Leewood Golf Club, just a stone’s throw from Crestwood off the Bronx River Parkway and through the Leewood Tunnel, this

event brings out an average of 120 golfers each year to raise funds for the Pastor’s Scholar-ship. Over the last five years, the Men’s Club has donated $87,000 to this cause.

The success of the golf outing is, in no small part, due to the hard work of a golf committee which, over the last five years, has included a number of An-nunciation graduates. Chaired by Tommy Gilchrist ’77, the committee currently includes approximately twenty people; among them are John Conlon ’77, John Sullivan ‘82, and Ter-rence Fay ’84. In recent years, Michael Cavallo ’80, Tom Cramer ’73, Brian Duffy ’91, Luke Dougherty former class-

Kieran Kilduff, President of the Men’s Club, says “Having graduates of the School, whose own children are now students at Annunciation, in-volved in this event lends conti-nuity to the stewardship of the Parish. The Golf outing is the most important event that the Men’s Club organizes, since it is our biggest fundraiser.”

According to Tommy Gil-christ, his involvement began a few years back when the reins of this outing were being handed

over from older members of the Men’s Club to younger mem-bers. At the time, there were some who thought that the out-ing should be revamped. Tommy spoke on behalf of tra-dition and decided to get in-volved. He believed that the continued on page 7
