Tuesday, January 20th 2009, the United States of America got a new president, Barack Obama. He is now our 44th president. Everybody is excited about our new president because they want to see what is going to happen. President Obama has a lot he wants to do for our country. He wants to find peace and end the war we are fighting and bring our service men and women home safely. He has promised the people that he will work on the economy (help find jobs) and end the corruption of financial institutions (when banks and investment Firms cheat their customers).

An excerpt from President Obama’s Speech:

“Forty four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears, and true to our founding documents.” A lot of promises are made during campaigns, but only few are kept. Let’s hope President Obama remembers his promises.

Miss Whipple’s 6th Grade GATE

The LBM, Living Biography Museum is a marvelous opportunity for anyone who has experienced it and it’s better the second time because if you’re in Miss. Whipple’s class, then you know how challenging it is to write the speech and find the costume.

For me, it is a privilege because it is a lot of fun. It is wonderful to be in her class to be able to perform this magnificent museum. David Nguyen, who was in Miss. Whipple’s class twice, had this to say, “Well I think it’s a great opportunity for others to see sixth graders

performing as famous people, for example, Martin being Neil Armstrong.

I think it’s nerve-wracking even the second time around because you have to perfect the speech and try not to mess up. Jarred, another sixth-grader in Miss Whipple’s class said,” It’s good

so primary grades can see and have the opportunity to experience the LBM. It’s not that nerve-wracking because it’s hard to overcome your stage fright.” Miss Whipple, the director said,” The LBM is a creative and interesting way for scholars to research and learn about a person in history who made a positive difference in the world. It takes months to complete this assignment but it is well worth it for the researcher themselves and other scholars at Gauer. I am very, very proud of my students’ accomplishments with the LBM.” What I can say about all of this is that even though it’s challenging, when we have to perform it’s all that and more. At first you’re all trembling and thinking, “Oh, what will I do?” But after saying it even once, you know it will go smoothly. Sure your throat may be dry, but there are water fountains you can go to at breaks, but when you’re finished with everything, you are contented with your performance and you can walk away from the library knowing that this important memory will be kept inside your memories of memories and know that you can be able to share this experience with everyone.

The Brookhurst band had an excellent performance. They really made our spirit high for the holidays. Some well know songs they played were Jingle Bells, Pirates of the Caribbean, Deck the Halls, and many more. As Mrs. Brown sums it up, “The music that was

                                         THE GAUER UPDATE

New Year Resolutions

Here are some New Year’s resolutions from a couple of people in Gauer Elementary School. “I would like to stick to my goals,” Mr. Juggert. Mr. Juan (Anaheim Achieves) said, “Wake up early.” If you have a resolution, here are some tips on how to keep them. If you are trying to wake up early like Mr. Juan said, then I would suggest to go to sleep a little bit earlier and/or set a timer a little bit earlier than your regular time, but I don’t mean to set the timer all the way to 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning. Another way is to keep a diary or a journal and keep your progress on how you’re doing. My last suggestion is to keep a note somewhere that you always go to (example: your bathroom mirror). Of course there are plenty of other resolutions and ways to keep them, but these are just a few of them. Anyway, my own resolution is to help people save money (like getting coupons for people). I hope you can keep your New Year’s resolutions! -Talia Ruiz, 5th Grade

Parent, Teacher Reading Workshop night

Ms. Miles, Ms. Martinez and Mr. Nguyen decided to do a parent, teacher workshop night on December 10th. Ms. Martinez was in Rm.15 talking to the parents in Spanish, while Ms. Miles and Mr. Nguyen were talking to the parents in English in RM 14. What both classes talked about were ways for their parents to help their children with homework and tests they need to take at school. The parents also got to do activities, for example they got to read a passage of a story together and do a flow map and a circle map. All the 3rd grade teachers sure did look like they did a good job because now, when the parents need to help their children on tests and homework, they know what to do. –Melissa Diaz, 5th Grade

Acjachemen Feast

Before the feast, Mrs. Martinez and Dr. Scott’s class had a surprise. Mrs. Martinez’s class had four different groups. With each group they were assigned a different Indian tribe. Somebody would go in the middle and sit down. Then the rest would form a circle around him/her. They would then put their hands out in front of them and chant four times, “We are a living tribe”, while moving around in a circle. Then they would sit down while the middle person stood up and said one detail about their tribe. Everybody in their group got to be in the middle. All four groups did this. After that, Dr. Scott’s class recited a poem. Then the feast BEGAN!!! With the help of some parent volunteers the food was served. Bryan and I even got to try the food. It was real good. Sadly the feast had to come to an end. Everybody was having a great time. –Jazmine Garcia, 5th Grade

Terror Attacks in Mumbai

On November 27, 2008 at 9:00 P.M., one of the most violent terror attacks on Indian soil, Mumbai came under night attack as terrorists used heavy machine guns and grenades to strike at the city’s most important targets: The busy railway station, the landmark Taj hotel, the luxury Oberoi Trident, the airport at Santa Cruz, and hospitals near the railway station killing at least 101 people and sending hundreds of injured to the hospital. The attacks appeared to be aimed at getting International attention as the terrorists took up to 40 British Nationals and other foreigner’s hostage. Seven places have been attacked. 2 hospitals were said to receive 75 bodies and more than 250 injured.  I feel this is one of the most terrible events to happen to my country.                                                                                                                        ‐Ashley Christian, 5th Grade

Movie Review: Bolt

The movie “Bolt” came out last year in November. When Bolt gets lost in the real world, he has to find his way back home. He believes that he has super powers, but he really does not. This movie is definitely a movie for the whole family to see and is also a Golden Globe Nominee.

Movie Review: Twilight                          Twilight is about a teenage boy and girl named Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. Bella moves to a small town named Forks to live with her father, Charlie. Bella notices a strange group of people where she befriends a boy named Edward. She uncovers a secret about him and his family that causes something terrible to happen to her. What I liked about Twilight is that it is very interesting because it gives a lot of details and makes you feel like you are in the movie. I suggest that the age’s 11‐ 18 would be most interested in the movie Twilight.                                          ‐ Andrea Arista / Kristi Jones, 6th Grade
