The Glorified Body of Christ Today’s Gospel passage picks up where the familiar story of the Road to Emmaus left off – Our Lord being recognized in the breaking of the bread. Much like the mystery of Jesus being totally God and totally human is, so is the concept of the glorified body of Jesus after his Resurrection difficult to grasp. On one hand that body seems more spiritual than physical, as when Jesus first appears to the Apostles in the upper room. How could He have gotten in when the door had been closed and locked? His existence seems to be entirely spiritual. But then Jesus asks for something to eat and immediately consumes the food they give him. Clearly, the Savior has a real body with normal human needs. His glorified body is both fully human, as it was from the moment of the Incarnation in Mary’s immaculate womb, and fully divine existing in eternity in Heaven. The same glorified body is present to us in the Most Blessed Sacrament. In Holy Communion we share in the divine nature of Jesus, even as we consume the “bread of Heaven”. As He did for the disciples on their way to Emmaus and the Apostles in the Upper Room, Jesus wants to ‘open our minds to understand the scriptures’. The various elements of our faith life complement and advance one another: prayer, the Sacraments, letting God’s love and light shine through charitable works of mercy. Ultimately, it’s a matter of grace that comes to us through God’s love and mercy. We can know these benefits in different ways: observing His greatness in the wonder of creation, experiencing the joy of family, feeling warmth when we extend our hand to someone in need, having peace in the reception of Holy Communion. Sacred scripture is the key to understanding God’s love. The Bible is the reference manual of life; our Basic Instructions Before Leaving Ear th. Jesus highlights “repentance for the forgiveness of sins” in today’s Gospel, and John’s first letter emphasizes obedience to God’s will: “The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments.” Significant changes in our lives, the hallmark of repentance, won’t happen overnight. Whether turning from serious sin or seeking to enhance a virtue; all things are possible with God’s grace! Trust in Jesus and follow in His way. Easter Blessings,
Father Michael

The faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam share a large number of theological beliefs and ethical principles. In fact, all three religions revere the Prophet Abraham and share more in common with each other than other religious traditions.
