Uphill in the Night (Luke 24:13-35)
From the holy hill of Zion, grieving Cleopas and friend sought escape from loss and sadness, looking for a place to mend; so they set out for Emmaus trav’ling down the pilgrim road, thinking that their hope was ended, their hearts heavy with the load.
But a stranger joined their journey seeming not to know events that had roiled a city and people to acclaim a peaceful Prince, so they told him of the Savior they had thought at last had come, of his trial and crucifixion, how his absence left them numb.
Then the stranger, over dinner, broke the bread and shared the wine, breaking open Scripture’s story to reveal God’s plan divine; what had been their crushing sorrow was transformed then into praise that the power of death was broken, and the two leapt up, amazed.
Then on feet no longer weary Cleopas and you, his friend, race back to the city gleeful that your joy now knows no end. Climbing up the pilgrim road, you, newly freed from evil’s might, share the unexpected story, carried uphill in the night.
In despair and consternation we desire to flee away, wanting refuge from our grieving, we run from our dismay. Though the psalmist reassures us there is joy with the morn, resurrection knows no schedule; each new moment is reborn!
The GREAT AIR CONDITIONER DEBACLEAs most of you know, two of Lakeside’s A/C units were stripped of their aluminum and copper metals and destroyed in the process by thieves. We are not exactly sure when it transpired, but it was discovered by Pastor Mark when he went out back with the ONG technicians last month. They were reacting to phone calls from neighbors of the church who said they smelled gas in the neighborhood. As Mark and the technicians were exploring the possibility of a Church gas leak (later found), Mark noticed the vandalized air conditioning units.
Mark immediately called Curtis Cromwell, Chairman of the Trustee Committee. Curtis called the police and our insurance company and began the process of, not only getting new units, but of protecting all our units with steel cages. This was not farmed out to professionals who would have charged us a high fee, but was handled by Curtis, Scott Schmitt and Nick Schmitt, saving Lakeside an estimated $8,000. As you can see from the pictures below, they did a top-notch job!
Have You Noticed? The Lakesider has become interactive for those who receive it by email.
Simply said, an interactive newsletter is one that allows it’s visitors to communicate with it or to go to websites with a click of the mouse.
The front page of The Lakesider from now on will have sites in blue that you may click to enter. One will open an email and al-low you to create and send email to the church. Others are links to Lakeside’s website and to other United Methodist Church websites.
From time to time you will find links (always in blue) to websites of interest, usually within an article. Watch for these items and go visiting on the web!

Native American Ministries Sunday
A kindergarten teacher was walking around observing her classroom of children while they were drawing pictures. As she got to one girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.The girl replied, "I'm drawing God."The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like."Without looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."
LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD -- IDEAS Lakeside is looking for a few bright ideas.
The Finance Committee has cut expenses to the bone (even the pastor’s salary will be decreas-ing in June) and all of last year’s fund raisers (except the garage sale) are on track for a repeat performance (in Jason’s case, literally) this year but (like so many other communities) Lakeside is still facing a funding short fall.
We are looking for fresh voices with fresh thoughts. If you have a bright idea for raising money (hopefully from outside the Lakeside congregation) please call or visit with Bob Alex-ander, Finance Chairman (641-9925) or Henry Bockus, Church Council Chairman (948-1021) and do it SOON! – Bob Alexander
LET’S SHOW OUR APPRECIATION
Can you imagine calling Lakeside and not getting an answer, or attending service and not being lifted up with beautiful music or a thought provoking sermon, or coming to church an hour or two on a Saturday to take your turn cleaning the facility, or not having a nursery or youth program? How about Sunday services with a blank screen so you have to (horrors) get out a hymnal? Not a pretty picture, huh?
We Lakesiders are so lucky to have Mark and Randy and Jason and Corrie and Scott and Kelly and Lanc and Lauren and Don and Patsy and Deanna . Let’s show them how much we appreciate them.
Please join us at a covered dish lunch honoring the Lakeside paid staff Sunday, April 7, immediately following the service. Bring a covered dish or two if you are able and take this opportunity to tell these folks how much we appreciate them.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon - April 7
Joy ClassEaster is rapidly approaching, but it is never too early or too late to say Hallelujah, He is risen!
Our Ladies Lunch is planned for the first Satur-day in April, place to be announced. All women of the church are invited.
Please remember these members in prayer: Da-vid Moore, Barbara Harris, Joyce Gragg, and Bobbie Kaserman. God bless us all!
On Saturday, March 30th, please pitch in for an all-church work day sponsored by our Trust-ees. Help them clean up the yard and flower beds and possibly plant spring flowers. We will be cleaning windows, sweeping sidewalks, picking up trash and, in general, making our church spiffy for Easter Sunday. The church has window cleaning supplies, but you may want to bring your own work gloves or any tools you think might be needed.
