United Methodist Church websites: www.UMC.org www.OKUMC.org

Greetings from Illinois,

I am writing this article in Mt. Vernon, IL as I wait to take my father to see the surgeon who will remove his gallbladder after his ulcer is healed. As you know, we had his 90th birthday party at his home church, Wesley United Methodist Church, but the guest of honor could not attend because he was in the hospital for a gallbladder attack. Family and friends streamed into the hospital room over two days to wish him well and a Happy Birthday.

Certainly it was disappointing that we could not be all together for the party. The Doctor actually gave me the option to take him to the party, but his pain was just too severe. Sometimes, you just have to make the right decision. And, now he is feeling much better.

This whole experience over the past several weeks has reminded of the power of prayer, the frailty of life, the importance of family and the need to make the correct decisions.

Decisions are not easy to make. As was true above, sometimes the correct decisions are not the popular or desired decisions. BUT, they are the decisions that need to be made. My dad has not always been happy with the decisions that the Doctor or I have made for his health care. There may be decisions down the line that will be even less popular.

As we start into the fall, we will be reigniting the ministries we have had in the past. As we strive to make our church more relevant to the needs of our members and of the Lakeside community, we will be looking to create new ministries. The decisions that will need to be made will not be easy. However, for Lakeside United Methodist Church to grow, we will need to make these difficult decisions. I ask you to be in prayer for the church and the decisions we will be making.

One more thing! I want to say thank you to all of you for allowing me to take the time I need to help my dad. Your expressions of care and concern have been wonderful. It is truly a joy to be your pastor.

Peace & Joy,Pastor Randy

Prayer List

Sunday, September 7 - It’s ROUND-Up Time! Re-member that phrase from years past? School has started, vacations are over, so Round Up everyone and let’s be about God’s work with our new Fore-man (Pastor Randy). A chuck wagon meal (fellow-ship dinner) will be after worship service. Share class will provide the meat and each family is asked to bring two side dishes to round out our meal. So dress casual or pull out the western duds and let’s go to work.Don’t forget our September Wednesday dinner and game night will be September 17 starting at 5:30 p.m. – Gaye Tow

R&R REPORT Last month we announced the R&R with R&R program (for those of you who missed it rest and relaxation with Randy and Rhonda). This month we can announce it has been great fun for those who have already participated. So far no one is more enthusiastic than the Mc-Guires. In fact, they managed to fit dinner with the Mark and Derrick Smith families’ adults and providing dessert for the Utes (in-cluding the Smith families’ children) progres-sive dinner all in one evening.

If you’d like to host a meal, there will be at least two opportunities in September and plenty more coming through 2014. Call Kay Alexander (826-2452) to talk about dates.

2014 Lakeside Membership Directories are available for everyone. These small booklets do not have pictures, but have updated information and new members’ information. Please take one. They are stacked on the credenzas at each church entry. Make sure your own information is correct. If not, please let me know any changes. New printings will be done once or twice a year (or more) as needed.

Thanks, Lakesiders, Randy RiceAdministrative Assistant

The K-5 class acts out the Lowering of the paralyzed Man on Ropes, in Sunday School, August 10th.

The Hearing Loss Association meet-ings will resume

September 8, (second Monday of the month) at 6:00 pm for social and 7:00 pm for meeting. They will also meet September 18, (third Thursday of the month) at 1:00 pm for social and 2:00 pm for meeting. Each month from September to May the meeting for night group is always on second Monday and day group is always on third Thurs-day. – Sylvia Frank

Lakeside is the home of many faithful prayer war-riors. When told of a need, members of the Lakeside prayer chain take concerns and petitions to God, not just on Sunday but “without

ceasing.” This year the prayer chain has been strength-ened by delivery of a prayer mid week. Ms. Randy sends a prayer by email to Prayer Chain links on Wednesday (one more thing she does for Lakeside; thank you Ms. Randy) but she needs a prayer to send. Please call Ms. Randy or Kay Alexander if you are willing to provide prayers for a month. The only requirement is that you deliver a prayer to Randy no later than Tuesday of each week during the month. We would apppreciate your help. – Kay Alexander

If you have a tattered American Flag that you wish to dispose of, please bring it to Bob Prest. Bob will see to it that it is disposed of properly according to law.
