Lowering Our Standards
This summer, as a graduation gift for my youngest son, Daniel, (and belated graduation gifts for my other sons, Jeffrey and Jared), I col-lected over 200 articles that I’ve written for various church newsletters over the years and self-published them as a book (with an additional book for my mother – you know mothers). I felt a little pretentious doing it, but I wanted my sons to have something on their bookshelves they felt guilty about never reading.
It made me think about the agony of writing some of those articles. There was always the mixed blessing of a deadline; the article had to be ready whether or not I was feeling “inspired.” Some articles came rather easily; many did not. Often, it required me to write a word, or two, then five, and then, surprise, something like an article surfaced. It reminds of a comment attributed to the poet William Stafford. Asked if he had ever experienced ‘writer’s block,’ Stafford replied that if he ever felt writer’s block coming on, he simply lowered his standards.
Maybe we expect too much; maybe our “standards” work against us. Paralysis often sets in when we aren’t sure of the path ahead. Fear of making some kind of misstep can keep us firmly rooted in place. But we forget we do not journey alone. Maybe some light will be given along the way; maybe God will open a path to us that we can’t yet see. Maybe I don’t have to know everything before I begin.
So we begin where we are. We take the next step. I assist the woman in need. I forego the treat and share what I have. I go to the Bible study. I volunteer at Skyline or the Food Bank. I write another sentence. I take the risk. I pray.

Bishop Hayes Returning For Third Term
A tradition was upended at the South Central Jurisdictional (SCJ) Conference, meeting in Oklahoma City on July 18-21. Since 1980, every bishop assigned to the Oklahoma Area served here a total of eight years (two terms). Until now. Late on July 20, the jurisdiction extended for a third term the as-signment of Bishop Robert E. Hayes Jr. Thus his leadership will span
12 years in the Oklahoma and Okla-homa Indian Missionary Conferences (OIMC). The term begins Sept. 1. Oklahomans rose, cheering and clap-ping, when the announcement was made about 11:30 p.m. Beaming, the bishop and Dee Hayes, his wife, flashed thumbs-up from the plenary stage in Cox Convention Center. A short time later, the flock gathered around their shepherd family, laying hands on them and praying.
Bishop Hayes rejoices late July 20.
Thank you to the twenty- two people who signed up to give blood. Twenty
units of blood will be available to save lives because of generous Lakesiders.
This is just another way to be serving people in God’s world. THANK YOU!!!!

Thank You Sara Beth and I were humbled by your generous gift in honor of our new life together. The fact that this was given despite never having met us compounds the compliment. We are honored. With your blessing and the bless-ings of other caring Christian broth-ers and sisters, we know that we will be enabled to give glory to God in our marriage. We thank you for your gift and ask for your prayers as we begin our new life together. Yours in Christ, Jeffrey & Sara Beth Rickman

Don’t forget our fund-raising Garage Sale in September. We still need your help! Please start cleaning out your garages, cabinets, closets for items to donate for the garage sale. Don’t wait until the last minute, bring them to the church now. We have set up a corner in the Share Class Sunday School room to store these items until the sale. We do not have any exact date for the garage sale yet. We are going to wait for the weather to cool down. If you have something large to donate and need help getting it to the church, please let us know. Remember the more antiques, collectibles, furniture, baby items and oth-er cool stuff you donate, the more funds we can raise. These funds will be used for general operating costs of the church. - Ginny Evans and Kristi Smith
