HAPPY EASTER! This week the Church celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday and the joy of Easter! Today’s celebration is a day established by St. Pope John Paul II. The second Sunday of Easter bears the title the Sunday of Divine Mercy. It is not a new solem-nity or a new feast day. It does not celebrate a new or separate mystery of redemption. This Sunday, our prayer and our celebration leads into the continuing celebration of God’s mercy during Easter time. Last week, we celebrated Easter Sunday. We continue to cele-
brate the power of Resurrection throughout the Easter season, into and including the celebration of the Feast of Pentecost on June 9. May we recognize new life, Resurrected life in the Easter season.
There are brochures and prayer cards at the entrances to the Church of St. Mary offering information
about Divine Mercy Sunday. As followers of our Risen Lord, may we continue to practice the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. As we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday may the following questions, brought to pray-er, guide us in God’s mercy. Where do you most experience mercy in your life? Where do you pray that mercy may be shared in your life? How do you trust in God’s redeeming and merciful love and share mercy? Is there a relationship, situation, experience where you are not merciful? To whom has God sent you with the gift of mer-cy? How has God shown mercy to you? In addition to the Masses celebrated at St. Mary’s, you are invited to a Mass and Holy Hour at St. Patrick’s Sunday afternoon. See information and details in today’s bulletin.
Saturday was a very special moment for our children receiving their First Holy Communion. We give
thanks for the faith shared in their home and in the Church of St. Mary. May the children receiving communion for the first time on Saturday, April 27 find strength, nourishment and grace in the sacrament of the Eucharist throughout their lives.
Grandparents, godparents, family members, and friends come to share in the joy of our celebration of First Holy Communion. The celebration of the Eucharist is to be the “source and summit” of our lives as Catho-lics. May our young children, filled with the joy of the Lord on their First Communion day, find strength, hope, and nourishment at the table of the Lord throughout their lives.
May our celebrations during the 50 days of Easter affirm within us our awareness of the need to come together in community, to come together in thanksgiving, to come together to be nourished, and to be sent forth into our world to live, share and proclaim Resurrection life in Jesus Christ.
Thank you to all who made a generous offertory contribution to the Church of St. Mary this Easter.

I believe it was penned by the very popular ‘anonymous:’ While praying one day a woman asked, “Who are you, God?” God answered, “I AM.” “But who is I AM?” she asked. God replied, “I am love, I am peace, I am grace, I am joy, I am strength, I am safety, I am shelter, I am power, I am creator, I am comforter, I am the beginning and the end. I am the way, the truth and the light.” With tears in her eyes she looked to heaven and said, “Now I understand. But, who am I?” God tenderly wiped the tears from her eyes and whispered, “You are mine.”

Peggy has a Master’s Degree in Theology from Ave Maria University and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Marian Studies from the University of Dayton. The Marian Institute is a charitable organization dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and its pri-mary mission is to make Mary known and loved.
The morning will conclude with praying the Rosary together. Rosaries made by women at the House of Peace will be available for purchase.

2019 Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Appeal
As an ailing senior, Cochise relies on the help of a dependable home aide to help her with daily tasks and errands so she could continue to live in her own home and enjoy a high quality of life. When she had trouble finding an aide that would fit her needs, she reached out to Catholic Charities who worked with her to find somebody she was comfortable with. Last year 364,373 seniors were supported by Catholic Charities through many programs including home delivered meals, adult day care, senior centers, congregate meals, family caregiver as-sistance, transportation services, the hospital transition program and more. The support seniors receive from Catholic Charities, ensures that they continue to live comfortably in their own homes and communities for as long as possible with dignity and compassionate support.

Monday, April 29, 2019 Acts 4:23-31; Jn 3:1-8 Saint Catherine of Siena, Virgin and Doctor of the Church
You must be born from above. The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus appears only in John’s Gospel — first, during Jesus’ teaching life; again, when he chides the Pharisees for condemning Jesus before they’ve heard him; and finally, when he, along with Joseph of Arimathea, honors Jesus’ body with preparation for burial. In today’s reading, Nicodemus is trying to work out how this rabbi and holy man is who he says he is. Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be “born from above” to understand. John uses the Greek word anōthen, which means both “from above” and “again,” making a little pun. Jesus explains that those “born from above” are like the wind. Another pun — the Greek pneuma, as well as the Hebrew rûah, mean both wind and spirit. The wind (and the Spirit) cannot be seen, but the effects are visible. A holy person outwardly looks no different from anyone else, but they are recognized by their effect on the world around them — as Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount, “by their fruits.” Because of his effect on the world, Nicodemus is righly recognized and venerated as a saint. St. Nicodemus, pray for us as we search for the Christ in our daily lives.
Tuesday, April 30, 2019 Acts 4:32-37; Jn 3:7b-15 There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the Apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. Years ago on the Second Sunday of Easter (Cycle B), I heard a homilist preach on this reading from Acts. As he worked to make his point he said, “As it says elsewhere in Scripture, ‘From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.’ ” Well, as a former member of the “collective” who produced the University of Oregon magazine, "The Insurgent Sociologist" — yes, really! — I recognized that quote as not from Scripture, but one popularized by Karl Marx. The moment was especially delicious for me because the guest priest was there as a friend to the very wealthy family of a child to be baptized. And as it happens, it was this passage in Acts (along with the encounter of Philip and the eunuch) that encouraged me to accept baptism in the church — the place that seemed to be my true home. Despite the
church’s imperfections (and mine), it still is. Loving God, give me the grace to be grateful for my blessings and generous with the abundance you have lavished upon me.
Wednesday, May 1, 2019 Acts 5:17-26; Jn 3:16-21 The high priest rose up and … the party of the Sadducees, and, filled with jealousy, laid hands upon the Apostles and put them in the public jail. It is the responsibility of the old to test the new. This is how healthy communities and institutions grow, avoiding sudden lurches down the wrong path, staying the steady course. Ideally, the new comes along to tweak the old, make a few necessary corrections, add an idea or two, illustrating that revelation continues, or as I saw on a bright, red banner outside our local United Church of Christ — a comma. Nothing more. The message: God is still speaking. Sadly, too often the old is far too human, jealous and fearful of the new, claiming orthodoxy when the issue is little more than a turf war. They prefer a period instead of a comma. And the new has its sins as well, disregarding too easily what has come before, reacting and rebelling instead of improving and enriching; seeking to start a new book instead of adding a chapter. Followers of Christ have known this tension since the beginning and yet … here’s the good news … the Church lurches on. Alleluia! Dear God, open our ears, quiet our minds, and soften our hearts.
Thursday, May 2, 2019 Acts 5:27-33/Jn 3:31-36 Saint Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church God does not ration the gift of the Spirit. God is not in the rationing business, but we are. We really are. We withhold the use of our talents with all kinds of self-rationing excuses: Others will make fun of me. Or resent me. Or I might fail. Look stupid. If I do it this once, I might have to do it again. And again. People won’t leave me alone. I’m tired. I’m scared. I’m not ready. Maybe tomorrow or next week or next year. And anyway, just who do I think I am? Well, friend, you are the only one with your particular face of God. And if you don’t show it, then the world will not know that singular divine visage, and we will be poorer for it. So please, show us the gifts God gave you … to you and no one else. For the good of the world. Please. For the courage to say No to my fears and Yes to God and God’s people.
Friday, May 3, 2019 Cor 15:1-8; Jn 14:6-14 Saints Philip and James, Apostles Have I been with you for so long a time
and you still do not know me, Philip? Philip and James, whose feast we celebrate today, knew Jesus personally. They heard him preach, watched him heal, traveled with him, ate with him. Yet Philip implores Jesus to show him God. I suppose we should take heart that even a first-generation disciple, an apostle, a saint could be so dense. How many of our prayers are for what we are too blind to see all around us. We come to Mass and miss the presence of God. There are people on our path every day, and yet we pray for an end to our loneliness. We are like people in the midst of a storm praying for rain. There is a lovely story in a book I read my children. A wise man asks a little bear, “Can you tell me where God lives?” The little bear is silent for a moment and then asks the wise man, “First, kind sir, can you tell me where God does not live?” O God, please open my eyes, my mind, my heart to your presence everywhere, in everyone.
Saturday, May 4, 2019 Acts 6:1-7; Jn 6:16-21 It is not right for us to neglect the word of God…. I once heard a lector read this passage and proclaim with conviction that the Hellenists were complaining because their “windows” were being neglected. This passage usually prompts a word about deacons, but also says something about pastors. How many come to the seminary with a call from God to be a CEO? Yet, many pastors will admit they spend more time on matters worldly, even mundane, rather than wrestling with God’s word and how to present the message to their congregations. Pastors would do well to find that person who has a gift for matching talent to task (what Paul calls the gift of administration) and then let them oversee those matters for which most priests are not trained. Priests have a privileged education and so often do not have the time to do the very pastoral work of study, reflection and presentation of the Gospel that affects the real lives of their people. For pastors and deacons and all who minister to the needs of others and for those they are charged to serve.

The Church of St. Mary Celebrates Confirmation
Earlier this month, Bishop Joseph Perry confirmed 119 eighth graders. He acknowledged the par-ents as the first educators of the Faith and encouraged them to keep the vows they made at their child’s Baptism. He also affirmed the sponsors asked them to check in on their Confirmand as they move forward in life to make sure they remain faithful. The message Bishop Perry had for all the Confirmandi was: to make a choice for Christ in their life. He told them they are indispensable to the life of the Church as they bring vision, hopes, and dreams. They are empowered by the Holy Spirit to make a difference in the Church and society. Bishop Perry’s wise counsel was received well by all. It was a wonderful, spirit-filled celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation!

Peace – the first gift of the risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. Look for opportunities to share His peace, not only within our local parish boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, we receive the peace of Jesus Christ.
