Mass 5.30pm For People of the Parish

  • W hen we achieve something momentous or finish a task that has taken a lot of effort, we usually want to sit back and admire what we have done, to take stock and rest on our laurels for a while. So after the events of Easter youd expect the Church to sit back and bask in the glo-ry of it all. But youd be wrong!

Today, just one week after the cli-max of Easter were told that we have to be on the move, wit-nessing to our faith in Christ. In fact, thats hardly surprising since in todays scripture we meet the risen Christ on that first Easter Sunday in Johns gospel. He goes to the disciples and tells them that just as the Father sent him, so now he is sending them out to be witnesses of his resurrection. Theres no time to laze around. A lot of us have a prob-lem witnessing to our

faith. Perhaps we feel awkward or embar-rassed about the pro-spect of talking to others about our beliefs. Maybe we are put off by the thought of being tarred with the same brush as those who knock on peoples doors or stand

ranting against the world on high streets or mar-kets in many of our towns and cities. It could be that we think witness-ing to our faith is the job of the clergy and is best left to them. Whatever the reason its certainly the case that theres a lot less of it now than there used to be.

Of course, faith is good to have but not good to hold on to. Its intended

to be passed on and its the job of every baptised Christian to share in that task of letting others know about Jesus Christ and the promises he has made in his Fathers name. But witnessing to this doesnt mean that we have to stand on a

soapbox in some public place. They say that faith is caught not taught. Most of us catch it from our parents or some person who means a lot to us.

W e can witness to Christ by the

example of our lives, by the way we treat others, by the way we simply stand up for those less fortunate than ourselves, by the way we encour-age our own children in their faith and by the way we are ready to be the first to lend a hand. So as the alleluias of the resurrection begin to sound more distant, this is not the time to press the re-wind button. Its time for the fast-forward!

    Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist,

Following the Day of Reflection, and as a result of the discussions, some guidelines have been prepared as a reminder of what was agreed. Please collect a copy of the notes from the Sacristy, af-ter Mass. For those unable to attend the Day, the notes provide the agreed procedure to be used.

    Ministers of the Word (Readers),

In a similar way, guidelines have been prepared to as-sist all Readers in your role. Please collect a copy of the notes from the Sacristy, after Mass.

    Easter Flowers

A very big thank you to the parish for the generosity shown regarding the flower collection for Easter. It was tremendous response and I'm sure you will agree the church looked wonderful for this, the most important festi-val of the year. Thank you also to the 'flower arrangers' who used their talents for the glory of God. Please remember we are always keen to take on new people who would like to join the rota for flowers. Many hands mean the rota is more spaced out and thus less frequent commitment for eve-ryone. Please give some thought to joining this service to the parish. Carole Philpot
