From

Father Murphy

THE TIME OF MERCY

Vatican City, Apr 11, 2015 - In a world marked by suffering and fierce persecution – especially of Christians – now “is the time for mercy,” Pope Francis said, speaking at the vigil for the Feast of Divine Mercy. Reflecting on the ongoing persecution faced by Christians, the Pope said, “our prayer is all the more intense and becomes a cry for help to the Father, who is rich in mercy, that he may sustain the faith of our many brothers and sisters who are in pain.” For our part, we are to seek the grace of “conversion of our own hearts,” whereby we are moved “from indifference to compassion.” Speaking the evening before the Feast of Divine Mercy, which falls on the first Sunday after Easter, Pope Francis recalled Jesus’ words to his disciples, “Peace be with you!” During the Easter season, he said, this concept of peace “remains the desire of so many people who suffer unprecedented violence of discrimination and death simply because they bear the name ‘Christian’.” Regardless of life’s difficulties and sufferings, the pontiff said – citing St. Paul – the hope of salvation won for us the mystery of Jesus’ death and resurrection “continues to grow.” “The mercy of God is poured out upon us, making us just and giving us peace,” he said. “This is a time for the Church to rediscover the meaning of the mission entrusted to her by the Lord on the day of Easter: to be a sign and an instrument of the Father’s mercy.” Divine Mercy Sunday, celebrated on the Octave of Easter (the Sunday after Easter Sunday, is a relatively new addition to the Roman Catholic

liturgical calendar. Celebrating the Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ, as revealed by Christ Himself to St. Maria Faustina Kowalski, this feast was extended to the entire Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000, the day that he canonized Saint Faustina.

OCTAVE OF EASTER, SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

History A plenary indulgence (the forgiveness of all temporal punishment resulting from sins that have already been confessed) is granted on the Feast of Divine Mercy if to all the faithful who go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, and "in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. 'Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!')."

Prayer to Reignite the Holy Spirit in the City of Taunton O Dear Blessed Mother: we come to you at this time, asking for your powerful intercession for the great City of Taunton. As we travel around and look at all the Churches that God granted to this great City we realize how truly blessed we are. We pray that all the sacrifices that were performed by so many Citizens of Taunton down through the years, for the honor and glory of God, that the fruits of their labor may not be in vain. O Dear Blessed Mother: intercede once again like you have done so many times in the past, helping all of us to understand the importance of prayer and sacrifice. Today Taunton is a City that is losing its flame of faith and hope in almighty God. O Dear Blessed Mother: we are asking you, to humbly intercede before your Son, to send the Holy Spirit in a powerful way to ignite the faith of Taunton once again. So that we can live in harmony, peace and joy, with the assurance that the God who made us is with us, and keeps us safe from all evil. O Dear Blessed Mother: you are our great hope and intercessor to bring this prayer to your son, so that all the people of Taunton may be ignited in the powerful flame of the Holy Spirit once again. Amen

Social gathering in the parish hall afterward.
