Light allows us to see, to know where we are and what around us.
Nothing would be visible without light, light also makes it possibleto express and show to the mind's eye things that eludes the physical one.
It is divided into natural light and artificial light
Natural light is a gift
What is Light?
It is a visible ray with a wavelength between 400 to 750 nanometers

Presentation Notes
Lighting plays a vital role in the way people experience and understand architecture. Whether buildings and structures are lit naturally or artificially, lighting is the medium that allows us to see and appreciate the beauty in the buildings around us. Lighting can bring an emotional value to architecture it helps create an experience for those who occupy the space. Without lighting, where would architecture be? Would it still have the same impact? No, it wouldn’t. Whether it’s daylighting or artificial lighting, light draws attention to textures, colors, and forms of a space, helping architecture achieve its true purpose. Vision is the single most important sense through which we enjoy architecture, and lighting enhances the way we perceive architecture even more.
• To create a successful balance between lighting and architecture, it’s important to remember three key aspects of architectural lighting:
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Aesthetic is where designers and architects focus on the emotional impact the balance of lighting and architecture will have on occupants. It’s where designers determine how they want people to feel when they walk around a space. This aspect is especially important for retail locations; exterior lighting should draw the consumer in, and the interior lighting should awe them as they walk through the doors in addition to showing off product.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Function cannot be overlooked. We want the lighting to look a certain way, but we have to also make sure it serves its most important purpose to help us see. Areas should be illuminated so occupants feel safe when navigating a room or entire building. They should be able to see the floor and walls around them, which should create a feeling of reassurance.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Efficiency is very important in today’s age of green building and sustainability movements. It’s one thing to create a breathtaking lighting layout, but it’s another to create a breathtaking layout that is also incredibly energy efficient. This can be done by assuring the majority of the light is reaching its target and there is less wasted light. Reducing the amount of wasted light will make the building more efficient. An easy way this can be done is to install LEDs instead of fluorescent lighting. Because of the technology, there is less wasted light with LEDs than fluorescent due to the directional nature of LEDs.
Use Daylight
Natural daylighting is the least expensive light source of all
Lighting Controls
An occupancy sensor or lamp timer will turn lights on and off automatically to save energy.
Smart Lighting Design
Use task lighting where you need the light most and reduce ambient light levels.
Match Your Light to the Task
Lighting Spatial BordersTo enhance architectural elements and evoke emotions, it’s important to understand spatial borders and how to properly light them.
Enhance vertical borders
Enhance horizontal borders
Lighting architectural elements
Presenter
Presentation Notes
To enhance vertical borders for example, light should be directed towards wall surfaces. If there is a wall that is a different texture, or simply one that the occupants should notice more than others, wall washing is a great tool It will draw attention to the wall and make it appear as its own architectural element instead of a piece of an entire room. This can be used in retail locations to draw more attention to wall displays.
Enhance horizontal borders can be emphasized by illuminating the floor and ceiling. By lighting the floor, objects and pedestrian surfaces are lit. This is particularly important in dark spaces such as movie theaters and night clubs. The ambient and accent light levels are so low that not enough light reaches the floor, thus requiring the floor to be illuminated Executed properly, this can act as task and accent lighting.
After vertical and horizontal borders have been lit, it’s important to not forget about lighting architectural elements. Lighting pillars, archways, textures, etc. can draw attention away from a room as a whole, and force the eye to focus on the illuminated architectural elements In a room full of colors and architectural elements, it’s sometimes difficult to make certain areas stand out. Light can help with this problem by making those elements more obvious. This tactic can be used for interior and exterior lighting applications.
Undesirable cluttered ceiling.Organized ceiling. Round and square down-lights.
Light Arrangement
Presenter
Presentation Notes
‘less is more’. One should reduce the number of luminaires to the minimum possible by calculating how much light is actually required. Instead of twenty small down-lights, try to use eight more powerful luminaires. Down-lights can be arranged in arrays and grouped in lines or in a pattern. One should place down-lights only at locations where they are necessary rather than simply applying a grid. If possible, it helps to position the luminaires out of sight towards the perimeters of a space and group them.

Outdoor LightingThe designer summed up the six main points of the outdoor lighting design :
Defining the Structure of the Building.
Perform Light Treatment on the Top of the Building.
Due to the Large Flow of People at the Entrance and Exit of the Building.
Light Color Temperature Selection.
Choice of Lamps and Light Sources.
Ways of Lighting Control.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The value of light for a building is as important as an image for a person. In the performance of modern architecture, the lighting environment occupies a very significant meaning. So the concept that the light is the soul of the building is increasingly recognized by people, and the design of the lighting has been placed in the macroscopic perspective of architectural design and overall planning.

1. Defining the structure of the building, based on the characteristics of the building, and considering the surrounding environment, starting from the needs of the light environment and aesthetic sense, combining function and aesthetics, and we notice the coordination of lighting design and architectural modeling, and it does not affect the daytime landscape and light pollution of the building. It integrates the creativity of the light into the design concept of the building. The light truly shows the high-end and luxury of the building, and also fully expresses the soul of modern architecture.

2. Perform light treatment on the top of the building, highlight the outline, and spread the commercial value, so that the illumination of the overall building facade is even, which makes the building stand out from the surrounding chaotic lights, thus highlighting the towering structure of the building and the atmosphere of modern architecture.

3. Due to the large flow of people at the entrance and exit of the building, in order to highlight the prominent position, the illuminance should be increased and the brightness at the entrance should be increased.

Natural light comes from above, from the sun. When lighting from the ground up, the effect is unnatural and thus more noticeable to the human eye. Ground mounted fixtures that up light the the exterior of the home are more eye catching and more noticeable than soffit mounted down lights. As a result, the eye is drawn up, which emphasizes the scale of the home. Soffit lights are recessed and do the opposite; they pool light on the ground and draw the eye down. Soffit down lights leave the soffit and fascia of the home dark except for the bright, intrusive light of the soffit light itself.

• CCT stands for Correlated Color Temperature “Measured by Kelvin” is a expression used to indicate the color of a source of light by comparing i with a black body color
CCT (Correlated Color Temperature)
Light Color Temperature Throughout a Day.
Biological Effects of Light• Daylight raises the level of cortisol and
testosterone so we feel awake and active
• In the evening the level of melatonin rises so we feel comfortable and sleepy

For advertising, art, or the corporate message: the façade increasingly plays a role as attention getter. In the past years we witnessed the emergence of façades containing photo prints, texts and poems, abstract images or variable translucence. All instances of a rather static form of communication. However, these façades are merely the beginning of a new development. The façade of the future communicates interactively. Using movement, color and light. The façade as interactive communication tool.
