USP’s explained
Why treat swimming pool water ?
• Untreated bathing water contains pollutants that are harmful to health and is unpleasant.
• It harbours bacteria, viruses and cysts. • Untreated water is a breeding ground for parasites,
mosquitos and other pests. • Untreated water is unsightly and unpleasant. • It is a breeding ground for algae.

USP’s explained
When pool water is treated with ultraviolet light of the appropriate strength and wavelength:
• dangerous micro-organisms and moulds are rendered harmless;
• bathers are protected against illnesses caused by microorganisms that are unaffected by chlorine.
• floating algae are destroyed.
USP’s explained
Ultraviolet (UV) is elektromagnetic radiation • UV -> UV-A, UV-B en UV-C • UV-C (200-280nm) UV-B (280-315nm) UV-A (315-400nm) • UV-C 254 nm
UV-C explained
UV-C disrupts the DNA of microorganism which are inactivated or even destroyed.
UV-C explained
USP’s explained
Reasons for cloudy water:
• Environmental sources • Human sources • Chemical sources • Mechanical reasons
USP’s explained
How to clear up cloudy water: • A pool system (pump – filter etc.) must be designed at
an appropriate size. • Keep the level of chemicals in balance. • Regular cleaning and backwash • A non-hazardous method against cloudy pool water
are UV-C purification systems. UV-C light is very effective at eliminating micro-organisms and chloramines
USP’s explained
USP’s explained
Chemicals in pools • Most pools rely on the same chemicals that have
been in use for over 40 years. • These chemicals will burn your eyes or irritate your
skin. • No doubt that pool chemicals increase the risks of
allergies, asthma, and even some forms of cancer.
Chemicals
Chemicals in pools • Some organic pollutants such as sweat, urine and
other bodily fluids contain nitrogen. • These products decompose to produce ammonia
(NH3). • The ammonia reacts with hypochlorous acid to
produce compounds called chloramines in the water.
Chemicals
Chloramines • very unpleasant "swimming pool" smell. • Cause irritated skin, nose, throat and eyes of bathers. • Chloramines affect the respiratory system, particularly
of children and aggravates asthma. • Attack the fabric of the swimming pool and the pool
building.
Chemicals
UV-C and Chemicals • UV-C breaks the vicious cycle of pool chemicals. • By destroying pathogens there will be a lower chemical
demand. • Toxic chloramines and other disinfection by-products are
safely eliminated by UV-C. • No bad smell, irritation of skin, throat and eyes and no
attacking of the fabric op the pool.
USP’s explained
UV-C and Chemicals • Chlorine increases the pH. When using less chlorine the
pH will not rise as fast Use of pH- or other acid can be reduced.
• Less acid means the bicarbonate level will be stabile longer. Advantages: pH will be more stable en will need less correction. Backwashing can be reduced because bicarbonate level is longer stable.
• Less use of Chlorine means less salt when using saltwater electrolysis.
• Less need of chlorine shock so even more reduction of chlorine.
USP’s explained
USP’s explained
Lower cost: chemicals-energy-maintenance • Less Chlorine (shock), pH - / Acid • Less salt when using saltwater electrolysis • Low investment for lower running costs • Less need of changing water • Because UV-C radiation destroys harmful chloramines
in the water, the materials in and around the pool get affected much less. Maintenance costs will be brought down significantly.
USP’s explained
USP’s explained
No risk of overdosing • When using UV-C nothing is added to the water. UV
radiation can therefore not be overdosed. • UV-C radiation will diminish over time. The UV lamp
must be replaced at the end of their prescribed service life (mostly annually).
• Just because a UV lamp lights up does not mean that it is producing UV at the correct intensity.
USP’s explained
USP’s explained
Non-hazardous & green technology • UV light is an environmentally friendly way to sanitize
pool water. • By destroying micro-organisms and reducing
chloramines, many common pool water troubles belong to the past, with a pleasant swimming experience, crystal clear water and carefree maintenance as a result.

ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESS
-A.O.P.-
VGE Pro AOP Technology
Make Ozone and UV work together synergetic and get the best of both worlds, and more…
VGE Pro AOP Technology
In the first stage, high voltage generated O3 is added to the water in the reaction chamber through a venturi system supported by a booster pump. After a short residence in the reaction chamber the water containing the remaining O3 is being pushed to the UV reactor.
VGE Pro AOP Technology
In the second stage, UV energy breaks the bonds in water that contains O3 to form OH (hydroxyl) radicals. The hydroxyl radicals produced are themselves powerful oxidizing agents. (Which also destroy the chloramines in the water.) These two processes combined are known as Advanced Oxidation Process.

UVM vs UVL
Low pressure UV lamps are designed to have the maximum biocide effect, giving excellent disinfection of the swimming pool water.
Of course, if the objective were just disinfection, then (as can be seen from the graph) medium pressure lamps are nowhere near as efficient at doing this as low pressure lamps, since a much lower proportion of their total UV power is produced at the wavelength of maximum germicidal effective-ness.
