Update from Legislative Assembly October 24, Olympia, WA —

Legislative Assembly

The annual Washington State PTA Legislative Assembly took place at the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia on October 24. More than half of the 240 PTA members in attendance were first time attendees who participated in learning opportunities throughout the day. During this one day event, two new issues were added to the statewide platform to promote effective policy solutions for all of Washington’s 1.5 million children.

The current platform includes our top five:

Funding McClearyCreate Positive School Climates Through Social Emotional LearningIncreasing Capital FundingIncreased Access to Higher EducationBreakfast After the Bell.

The two new issues* are added to the supported platform which includes the following:

Access, Equity & Opportunity for Students with Disabilities and Special Needs Access to Health and Dental Care Career Development and Training for Paraeducators*Closing Opportunity Gaps E-911 Training for Youth Equal Access for ELL Students Family and Community Engagement Improving Education Outcomes for Foster Children*Inclusive Special Education Paid Sick and Family Leave Playground Safety Investing in Teacher Professional Learning (CTWG Implementation) Regulating Child Restraint and Isolation in Schools

The day began early with “issue speed geeking” where members learned about the new issues and received updates on the current top five platform. These fast paced learning sessions were laced with the energy of the issue presenters and the attendees.

During the general session, we learned that our state board of directors voted to support the Paramount Duty resolution and encouraged local units to consider doing the same. An overview of the resolution and the steps to adopt it at local PTA’s was provided by Region Legislative Chairs Jason Rothkowitz (region 2) and Duncan Taylor (region 9). Information on how to accomplish this process will be shared through leadership news this week.

We were also reminded that Washington State PTA’s board of directors took a position opposing I-1366 at their April 2015 board meeting because it may reduce state collection of sales tax which would have a huge negative impact on the state general fund and education budgets. The initiative language on the ballot reads as follows:

Initiative Measure No. 1366 concerns state taxes and fees. This measure would decrease the sales tax rate unless the legislature refers to voters a constitutional amendment requiring two-thirds legislative approval or voter approval to raise taxes, and legislative approval for fee increases.

Wow! I'm SO excited to have an opportunity to use technology in PE!There are SO many ways that I could torture (I mean) teach kids about their bodies with the endless  fitness and nutrition apps that demonstrate activities and challenges to practice in PE and home too!!!!!!!!!  It is so hard to get access/time to the computer lab, the the classroom ipads and let alone the internet connection. Having a few ipads would allow me to set up stations with different skills (it's like duplicating all my characters) lol and get the quality and consistency with teaching skills, sportmanship and a whole "slew" of things!!! My substitutes would LOVE me for that! essential anatomy:http://applications.3d4medical.com/help_essential_anatomy_01

Looping skills to demo - make QR codes to scan activities and make stations all over the gym and outside!https://thepegeek.com/2015/05/looping-skill-demos/

Superhero workouts - tons of workouts and activites to follow!https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sixtostart.superheroworkout

Plickers: A quick and easy app used to to do instant checks-for-understanding, exit tickets, polls during class.https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/plickers/id701184049?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

Coacheye: let's me video kids activity and show them how to improve (slo-mo too)

QR codes to scan all over the school (obstacle/challenge course)

Plus we would be ale to check our Sqords at school!!! Yeah*****

Thank you so much for considering sharing such a gift with me in PE!!!!
