C M EContinuing Medical Education
TARGET AUDIENCEThis activity is designed to meet the educational needs of transplant surgeons, physicians, coordinators, researchers, and other health professionals involved in the care of transplant patients.
LEARNER OBJECTIVESAfter completing this educational activity, participants will be able to:
• Learn new developments in science and clinical practice of transplantation.
• Understand these issues in the context of the evolving regulatory environment such as in cases involving live donors, donors after cardiac death, or more at-risk organs due to infection, donor malignancy, or extended ischemic times.
• Recognize the goals of the various stake holders including transplant centers and examine practical ideas for operating within this changing paradigm.
• Analyze the impact of regulation and legislation on the future of patient care.
• Determine strategies to expand the donor pool and the clinical and ethical issues associated with established and emerging strategies.
DISCLOSURESASTS ensures that all CME certified activities are fair, valid, balanced, scientifically rigorous, and free of commercial bias and designed to promote professional performance, compe-tency, and improved patient outcomes. It is the policy of ASTS that individuals in a position to influence/control content of a CME activity disclose all or apparent conflicts of interest(s) that have occurred within the last 12 months of the activity.
The faculty disclosures will be provided in the program book and/or slides.
Online Evaluation, Credit Claim, and Certificate SystemUpon completion of the overall evaluation and credit claiming, all registered attendees will be able to immediately access, save, and/or print their CME Certificate and/or Certificate of Attendance online.
All registered attendees will receive an email from ASTS at the conclusion of the meeting with a link to a website to complete the evaluations. To receive your CME certificate or Certificate of Attendance, you are required to complete the evaluations. You will have until April 3, 2013, to complete the evaluations and obtain your certificates.

STATEMENT OF NEEDThe Symposium will focus on the emerging dilemmas and is-sues associated with the growth of transplantation and the im-pact on patient outcomes, particularly in more complex cases. Comprehensive needs assessment research effectively un-covers educational gaps and unmet needs of transplantation surgery. Because of the rapid advances in transplantation, transplant professionals are in need of opportunities to update and maintain their knowledge of advances and changes in transplant medicine.
PURPOSE OF ACTIVITYThis Symposium is designed to address the educational needs of the transplant surgeons, trainees, fellows, clini-cians, coordinators, and allied health professionals to improve knowledge and learn up-to-date practices, innovative tech-niques, emerging technologies, and ethical and regulatory issues related to solid organ, cell, and tissue transplantation. Participants will engage in interactive discussions, debates, and exchange of ideas with expert faculty and col-leagues regarding controversies common in the transplant community. Attendees of this symposium will gain knowledge with learning designed to advance the quality of patient care.
