For years we have been researching and making alkyd paints, leading us to thedevelopment of C.A.S. AlkydPro Paint. C.A.S. AlkydPro Paint is the first line of true alkydsmade in the United States, and the first line of genuine Artist's grade alkyds. Unlike somefast-drying oils available today, our paints are made entirely from an Alkyd Resin Base —our paints contain no linseed oil. We are now offering 56 luminous colors and threemediums, providing artists with a full range of color and creative potential, availablein 70 ml and 120 ml tubes.
AlkydPro pigments are excellent quality with high lightfastness ratings. We use alow-odor formula, containing the minimum odorless mineral spirits and the maximumpigment. AlkydPro paints dry within two to twenty hours, depending on paint thickness,room temperature, etc. After drying, the surface stays flexible and durable.
We have painstakingly perfected our formula to create thick paints that are similar inconsistency to oil paints. Our formulation retains brushstrokes, as well as smoothbrushability.They are compatible with traditional oils and solvents.
Impasto MediumTransparent. Heavier consistency to retainshape for impasto painting techniques. Can beused to build structure by applying directly andcovering with paint or by mixing with paint coloron the palette. It dries thoroughly to allow thebuilding of a surface up to a1/4" per application. Also worksas an extender and can bediluted with solvent if needed.
Textured ImpastoSemi-opaque. Cloudy white incolor with a grainy textured. Lightweight forbuilding higher texture without adding weight.Can be mixed with color or used alone tocreate an under texture. Will dry to a tough butflexible sandy surface.
Gel Medium FastDryTransparent. This gel will speed drying of bothalkyds and traditional oils. Dries in a few hours.Used for extending colors and creatingtransparent glazes. It can be be diluted with sol-vent to achieve a thinner consistency ifdesired. Great for plein air painting.

Matisse Structure Acrylic is a professional artist colour of internationalstandard. It is water-resistant, permanent and totally flexible in light andheavy impasto applications. Matisse has a versatile range of permanentartist colours of maximum light exposure standard. Applied undiluted bybrush or knife it gives a rich deep impasto technique. The colours may bethinned with water for washes and water colour effects.
Use Impasto Medium for structure and Gel Medium for brilliant high glossglazes. Use Matte or Gloss Medium for adjusting surface sheen.

As an oil colorist it is important to work on oil primed surfaces & notuniversal primed surfaces. The reason is that universal primed sur-faces are semi-absorbent. Gesso is absorbent even if it is platesmooth. You can get around this by using an underpainting oilground on top of the surface of a universal ground canvas but this isvery time consuming & expensive. Unlike universal ground our oil
priming chemically bonds with the oil paint & is non-absorbent allowing the paint to sit upon the surface with the correct refraction quality of the oil binder. If you use any highquality oil color we urge you to use an oil primed surface & now we make it affordable!

The Stretcher A good stretcher foundation will greatly eliminate the concern that a canvas is outof line & require re-stretching in the future. You can easily check to see if the can-vas is square by simply resting it against a square surface & insuring that it liesflat against the edge. Charvin uses only select kiln dried wood stretcher bars& cross bar supports depending on the size. The frame is consistent with thesize of the canvas. The larger the size the more bracing is used to insurethat the frame is stable for the larger sizes. Using time honored lessonseach canvas is made to be a permanent support without compromise.
The Stretching TechniqueAll Charvin canvases are stretched by hand in France by skilled artisans, trained
classically in the art. It is an art & is an important selling feature. Just like art itselfthe value of the piece is not determined by its size but by the value of the crafts-manship displayed by the artist in their piece. So it is likewise true that a canvasowes much of its value to how it is made. As far as we know these canvases arethe only ones prepared in this matter for resale in the USA.
The use of copper nails (tacks) instead of staples give much more stabilityto the hold deployed at each stretching point. This is due to the fact that thenail has a head with a diameter that exhorts force at each point greaterthan a staple. This not only is important at the time of stretching but alsomaintains the stretch much more reliably than a staple which is weak at
each insertion point. Copper is used since it will not oxidize protecting the in-tegrity of the painting for centuries. The canvas is worked from center to side &
the excess canvas is turned over the edge & affixed to the back of theframe. Charvin canvases are very taught & are keyed with traditional woodpegs so you can tighten the canvas.
Oil Primed LinenLinen used by Charvin has long fibers that is elastic (but not too elas-tic like with low quality linen, which can weaken the canvas) & ex-tremely strong. The linens used by Charvin are characterized bytheir tight weave which offer exceptional stability now & overtime. Charvin does not use cotton in the production of theircanvases. Cotton for all its use commercially in stretched can-vas making has mediocre mechanical qualities, is a very fragile fabric & is extremely sensitive to humidity. Thus

Finally we come to the priming. The Charvin oil priming is near perfect. Oil priming should be very opaque & non absorbent.When you purchase universally primed canvas it is not ideal for painting with oil colors. The reason is that it is semi-ab-sorbent. Oil is the vehicle & when paint is applied to universally primed surfaces, it gets absorbed. This can flatten theappearance & reduce brilliance & depth in the composition regardless of how many layers are built up after the firstlayer. To ensure highest degree of consistency, modern machinery is used in the priming process.

I really enjoy the surface of the Panelli A Gesso panel.The panel comes well protected and well made and looks to be made of plywoodinstead of pressed wood, a plus in my book. The board is extremely sturdy and has noflex. The panel surface is extremely smooth and accepts my matte acrylic under-painting washes like a sponge. I also like how thepanel absorbs the layers of oil. I am able to getlayers on more quickly because the layers ofpaint do not just sit on the surface, but areabsorbed, in my opinion, making the toplayer dry more quickly. I can get to painingdetail more quickly. Since it is so smooth,the smallest brush strokes are evidentand texture is easy to build. The boarditself comes in many great standardframe sizes, but unlike the 2” widecanvases I use also, it does requireextra attention and expense. Overall,love this panel and will continue topaint happily on it!
