COMMUNITY

A group of PV learners took part in the Tribe Appalachian Trail Experience. TRIBE stands for

Teaching Resiliency to Individuals By Experiences. The goal of the program is to support the Mass Customized Learning vision by giving learners an opportunity to explore the fields of physical education, health, biology, and history through experiences outside of the classroom. The learners who have joined the Tribe took part in earning certifications in first aid, CPR, and basic water safety. They also participated in several spring outdoor hiking trainings, as well as completing virtual assignments on course content. The learners traveled to Gettysburg to tour the battlefield, and spent several days backpacking on the Appalachian Trail south to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia where the experience culminated.

The annual “Read Under the Lights” event was held in September. Elementary and Pre-K learners joined high school athletes for an evening of stories, sports demonstrations, snacks, and raffles.

The Pequea Valley Education Foundation held the second Annual Spring Fling on May 18 at PVHS. There were games, musical performances, and a lot of delicious food. The next Spring Fling will be held May 17, 2019 ... watch for details!

The Pequea Valley Education Foundation awarded over $10,000 last year, in addition to $3,000 toward college scholarships. Over the last four years the foundation has funded more than $80,000 to programs, scholarships, and materials for our learners.

members, and projects that the team were involved in. Apple Core members that presented include John Crater, Michael Ranson, Regan Donecker, Alyssa Yoder, and advisors Mary Ellen Simmons and Derek Sweigart.

School Visitations

On November 6, 2017, and April 30, 2018, educators from school districts and educational agencies across the state visited Pequea Valley

School District to learn about our Mass Customized Learning program. Attendees heard from learners and facilitators about how MCL has impacted teaching and learning and how we can customize learning options for all kids to get them to their post-secondary First Choice.

Pequea Valley offers a wonderful opportunity for dedicated junior and senior learners to participate in an internship program and work with professionals in the community to gain experience and insight into their chosen career interest. Please email [email protected] for more information regarding the internship program.

Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Education, Pedro Rivera, paid a visit to our district to witness firsthand the importance of STEM and Computer Science in education. Secretary Rivera visited Jamiel Smoker’s STEM class at PVIS and then traveled to PVHS for a visit to their STEM classroom.

In October, Pequea Valley Intermediate School held a Manufacturing Week for seventh and eighth grade learners. Every learner had the opportunity to help build picnic tables for the courtyard, screenprint their own t-shirt, and race to see who

could build a window frame the fastest. During the week, learners also had the opportunity to visit a tiny home, and travel to New Holland Agriculture where they learned about agriculture equipment and how it is made. Another day, various manufacturers visited PVIS and shared

their careers.

PV Planetarium50th Anniversary and Grand Reopening

Pequea Valley School District celebrated the 50th Anniversary and Grand Reopening of our brand new planetarium on May 12. In 2016, high school science teacher, Rob Webb, applied for the Farmers Insurance

Thank America’s Teachers Grant which he was awarded in the amount of $100.000. This grant enabled the district to purchase an LED lighting system, new moveable chairs, carpet, a sound system, and teaching materials for a Summer Space Camp. The district funded the Spitz SciDome digital system. Former astronaut, Roger

Crouch, attended the event and the planetarium was dedicated in honor of former director, Bill Chronister.

Learners now have the opportunity to travel from Earth to other planets and star systems, zoom through a digital recreation of the human body, transport themselves

around the globe and witness events in 360 degrees, and take a new course, Planetarium STEAM Productions, which will teach them how to produce original content for public shows.
