DREAM-FEVER SERIES HISTORYSERIES RESULTS

2014 ATLANTA DREAM BASKETBALL

www.AtlantaDream.net • @AtlantaDream • Facebook.com/AtlantaDream

CLASS OF THE EASTEither Atlanta or Indiana has represented the East in the WNBA Finals in each of the past five sea-sons, with the Dream making three appearances (2013, 2011, 2010), and the Fever two (2012, 2009). Atlanta and Indiana are also the only teams in the Eastern Conference to reach the playoffs in each of the past five seasons, and during those five seasons, Indiana’s 102 total regular-season wins led all Eastern Conference teams, while Atlanta’s 93 victories ranked second.

HOME COOKINGAtlanta is looking to continue its success in Philips Arena, where the Dream is 7-1 this season for the best home record in the league. Last year, the Dream won its first eight games at Philips Arena and finished the season with a franchise-best 13 home victories. The Dream has won 25 of its last 30 regular-season home games dating back to the 2012 season.

HOME COURT DISADVANTAGEAlthough the Dream has played well at home this season, the Dream’s lone home loss came at the hands of Indiana on May 25. In fact, the road team has won all three games between the two teams this season. Including last year’s Eastern Conference Finals, which the Dream wrapped up at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the road team has won four straight contests in the series.

DID YOU KNOWAtlanta is 4-0 this season in games decided by four points or less ... Atlanta is 8-0 this season when scoring at least 80 points ... Atlanta is 8-0 this season when allowing fewer than 80 points ... Atlanta has won as many road games already this season (four) as it did in all of 2013 ... Atlanta is allowing just 17.2 points per game in the fourth quarter - its lowest point total surrendered of any quarter.

CRASHING THE BOARDSThe Dream has been the league’s best rebounding team this year, leading the league in rebound dif-ferential (+4.3), total rebounds per game (38.0) and total rebounding percentage (.539), and ranking second in offensive rebounds (12.1). Atlanta’s offensive rebounding percentage of .333 has led to a 208-168 advantage in second-chance points this season.

DREAM SEASON FOR DE SOUZAErika de Souza is off to the best start of her career. The ninth-year veteran is third in the league in rebounds (9.7) and blocks (1.7), fifth in field goal percentage (.593) and 10th in scoring (15.7). After leading the league with 18 double-doubles in 2013, de Souza has five more this season, which ranks tied for sixth in the league. She was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career for the week of June 2-8.

RECORD REBOUNDERSancho Lyttle ranks tied for fourth in the league in rebounding at 9.0 per game, thanks largely to her performance in the road opener at Indiana when she hauled down a franchise record 21 rebounds. Lyttle broke the team record she shared with Erika de Souza of 20 rebounds in a game. Lyttle has six double-doubles this season, which is tied for third most in the league.

WELCOME TO THE CENTURY CLUBErika de Souza and Sancho Lyttle both recorded their 1,000th career field goals June 22 in New York. The first to reach the milestone was de Souza, in the first quarter, while Lyttle joined her in the third period. Lyttle now has 1,014 career field goals while de Souza has 1,012, and they are the third and fourth members of this year’s Dream squad to have made at least 1,000 career field goals, joining Swin Cash (1,634) and Angel McCoughtry (1,163).

SHOOTING STARAngel McCoughtry, the league’s two-time defending scoring champion, ranks third in the league in scoring at 20.1 points per game. She has also been clutch, hitting the go-ahead basket with 42.9 seconds left in the season opener against San Antonio on May 16, the winning three-pointer with 8.8 seconds left in the road opener at Indiana, and the go-ahead three with 2:04 left at Indiana June 29. In addition, McCoughtry ranks third in the league in steals (2.5) and 11th in assists (4.1).

ALL-STAR POSSIBILITIESThe Dream is in position to potentially have as many as three starters plus a head coach for the 2014 All-Star Game, after early returns from the voting were announced June 24. Shoni Schimmel led all Eastern Conference guards by a whopping margin, with her 14,635 votes more than doubling the next closest guard (Washington’s Ivory Latta - 5,974). Among frontcourt players, Angel McCoughtry was second with 9,736 votes, while Erika de Souza was fourth, with her 7,579 votes trailing Indiana’s Tamika Catchings by 762 votes for the final frontcourt spot. In addition, Michael Cooper will be the East’s head coach by virtue of leading the East’s first-place team through games of June 29.

SHOWTIME SHONIShoni Schimmel’s WNBA career is off to a memorable start, as the rookie ranks 12th in the league in assists averaging 4.1 per game and ranks seventh among rookies in scoring (8.5). She set a WNBA record for most assists in the first four games of a career with 37, and tied the franchise record for assists in a game with 11 in the season opener, which was second most in a debut in WNBA history (Andrea Nagy, 12, on June 10, 1999). She followed that with 17 points and 10 assists the next night in Indiana, already becoming one of just four players in Dream history to have multiple double-digit assist games, joining Ivory Latta, Shalee Lehning and Angel McCoughtry.

HOT HAYESAfter scoring a total of just 19 points in the Dream’s first four games this season, Tiffany Hayes has been on fire during the last 11 contests, averaging 13.3 points per game. A career 31.9 percent three-point shooter entering the season, she ranks third in the WNBA in three-point field goal percentage in 2014, sinking 47.5 percent of her attempts (19-of-40).

SHARE AND SHARE ALIKEThe Dream has recorded at least 23 assists four times already this season, and leads the league averag-ing 19.3 assists per game. Last season, the Dream had just three games all season in which it recorded at least 23 assists, and averaged 16.6 assists per contest.

POINTS IN THE PAINTThe Dream has outscored its opponents in the paint in 12 of 15 games so far this season, with a sizable edge for the year of 592-460. The Dream collected a whopping 68 points in the paint in a victory over Los Angeles on June 3, which is 20 more than in any other game this year.

RUNNING WITH THE DREAMHead coach Michael Cooper has made no secret of his desire to have his team push the ball up the floor and score in transition whenever possible. So far, that plan has been a success, as the Dream has outscored its opponents in fast-break points 13 times in the team’s first 15 games. Atlanta has nearly doubled its opponents’ fast-break points for the season, with a total margin of 200-101.

TO CATCH A THIEFAtlanta has long been one of the top teams in the league in steals, and 2014 is no exception, as the Dream currently leads the league averaging 10.7 steals per game. Individually, Sancho Lyttle is second in the league, averaging 2.6 steals per game, while Angel McCoughtry is third at 2.5 per contest.

CUTTING DOWN ON MISCUESAtlanta ranks last in the league in turnovers, averaging 16.4 per game, but the Dream has showed marked improvement in recent contests. Through the team’s first seven games, Atlanta had a total of 134 turnovers, for an average of 19.1 per game. But in the last eight contests, the Dream has commit-ted just 110 turnovers, for an average of only 13.8 per contest.

RECORD-TYING SIX STRAIGHTAtlanta had a six-game winning streak from June 3-20, tying the franchise record for longest winning streak. The Dream also won six in a row from May 15-30, 2010, and again from June 14-30, 2013.

2014 ATLANTA DREAM BASKETBALL

www.AtlantaDream.net • @AtlantaDream • Facebook.com/AtlantaDream

TOUGH DAtlanta tied a franchise record May 25 vs. Indiana, allowing the Fever only four points in the fourth quarter, marking the third time the Dream had allowed a team to score just four points in any quarter. Four points is also tied for the second-fewest ever allowed in a WNBA game since the league switched to quarters in 2007. Only 10 times in league history has a team held its opponents to four points or fewer in a quarter, and the Dream is the only team to accomplish it more than once.

SHOOTING FOR SIXAtlanta is seeking its sixth consecutive playoff appearance. Atlanta and Indiana are the only teams in the Eastern Conference to reach the playoffs in each of the past five seasons, and the Dream is the only team in the WNBA to finish with a record of at least .500 in each of the past five years. In fact, there have been 18 different WNBA franchises since the league began play in 1997, and of those 18 franchises, Atlanta is one of just four that reached the playoffs at least five times in its first six seasons. The other three (Charlotte, Houston, New York) were franchises that were part of the initial group of eight teams that began play in 1997. Of the 10 franchises that joined the league after 1997, only Atlanta has accomplished the feat.

RETURNING FIREPOWERAlthough half of the Dream roster is made up of newcomers (6 of 12), most of the firepower from the 2013 team returns, thanks to the return of three starters plus a healthy Sancho Lyttle. Players who accounted for 1,915 of Atlanta’s 2,614 points (73.3 percent) are back this season, while the Dream also returns players who accounted for 73.2 percent of its rebounds, 64.6 percent of its assists, 61.4 percent of its steals and 84.1 percent of its blocks.

CASHING IN ON A TITLEThe addition of four-time All-Star Swin Cash to the Dream’s roster gives the Dream a player with WNBA Championship experience. Cash won two titles while with Detroit (2003, 2006) and a third with Seattle (2010). No other Dream player has played in winning effort in a WNBA Finals game. Erika de Souza was a member of the 2002 Los Angeles Sparks title team, but did not play in the Finals. Cash joins Angel McCoughtry as Dream players who have won Olympic gold, while Tiffany Hayes joins Cash as players who have won NCAA titles.

McCOUGHTRY DEFENDS SCORING TITLESAngel McCoughtry has won two consecutive WNBA scoring titles after averaging a league-best 21.5 points per game last season. McCoughtry aims to become just the third player in WNBA history to win at least three consecutive scoring titles, joining Cynthia Cooper (1997-99) and Diana Taurasi (2008-11). McCoughtry narrowly missed winning her first scoring title in 2011, finishing 0.04 points per game behind Taurasi. McCoughtry’s career scoring average of 19.5 ranks third in WNBA history.

VETERAN FRONTCOURTAtlanta returns three post players who have logged a lot of games in a Dream uniform. Center Erika de Souza is the only member of the team who was on the initial roster in 2008, and has played in a franchise best 176 games for the Dream. Meanwhile, Angel McCoughtry and Sancho Lyttle came to the Dream one year after de Souza and have played in 172 and 143 games, respectively, in Dream uniforms.

AN INTERNATIONAL TEAMThere are currently 18 foreign-born players on WNBA rosters, and six of them play for the Dream. At-lanta’s roster includes players born in Brazil (Nadia Colhado, Erika de Souza), France (Céline Dumerc), Jamaica (Aneika Henry), Liberia (Matee Ajavon) and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (Sancho Lyt-tle). The Dream also began the season with Inga Orekhova, who was born in the Ukraine, on the roster.

LYTTLE EARNS INTERNATIONAL HONORIn February, Dream forward Sancho Lyttle was named the 2013 FIBA Europe Women’s Player of the Year. Lyttle earned the award based largely on her tournament MVP performance while helping Spain win the gold medal at EuroBasket Women in June of 2013. Lyttle was the top player at the EuroBasket competition, leading all players in scoring (18.4), rebounds (11.1), steals (2.9) and double-doubles (sev-en in nine games). In a 70-69 victory over host France in the gold-medal game, Lyttle collected 20 points, 11 boards, four steals and a pair of assists to help Spain win its first EuroBasket title in two decades.

COOPER BRINGS SHOWTIME TO THE DREAMTwo-time WNBA champion head coach Michael Cooper is in his first season as Atlanta’s head coach. Cooper is one of the most successful coaches in WNBA history, ranking second in career winning percentage (.663) and sixth in career victories (167) entering the 2014 sea-son. He is the last WNBA head coach to lead his team to back-to-back league titles, winning the 2001 and 2002 championships with the Los Angeles Sparks. He had two stints as head coach of the Sparks, amassing a record of 167-85 over eight seasons (2000-04, 2007-09), in-cluding a 25-13 (.658) playoff record. He guided the Sparks to three Western Conference titles and reached the conference finals six times.

THOMPSON, EDWARDS JOIN STAFFThe Dream completed its coaching staff with the additions of Karleen Thompson and Teresa Edwards as assistant coaches. Thompson was an assistant on Michael Cooper’s staff with the Los Angeles Sparks that won WNBA titles in 2001 and 2002, and she served as interim co-head coach when Cooper left during the 2004 season to join the Denver Nuggets’ staff. She was later the head coach and GM for the Houston Comets from 2007-08. Edwards, a five-time Olympian, coached with the Tulsa Shock, and was promoted from assistant to in-terim head coach in 2011. She also has coached with the Minnesota Lynx, but the former Georgia Bulldog is best known for her playing career. Sports Illustrated named her the No. 22 greatest female athlete - and No. 2 basketball player - of the 20th century.

TAYLOR NAMED PRESIDENT/GMAngela Taylor was named the Dream’s Executive Vice President and General Manager on Jan. 21, and was elevated to President on May 19. She previously served as Vice President and General Manager for the Washington Mystics for two seasons (2009-10) and Vice President of Business Operations for the Minnesota Lynx (2006-08), and is the Owner and President of NetWorks Sports Consulting. A member of two national championship teams as an undergraduate at Stanford, Taylor coached the Cardinal as well as at Texas A&M and Arizona before spending 10 years in the WNBA League Office.

TEAM OF THE YEARIn March, the Dream was named Team of the Year at the annual At-lanta Sports Awards. The Dream earned the award on the strength of a third Eastern Conference Championship and trip to the WNBA Finals in four seasons. The Dream reached the playoffs for a fifth con-secutive year in 2013, and set a franchise record with a 13-4 home record. Atlanta opened the season with a 10-1 record, becoming just the sixth team in WNBA history to win at least 10 of its first 11 games.

DREAM ANNOUNCES TELEVISION SCHEDULEThe Atlanta Dream renewed its television partnership with FOX Sports South and SportSouth for the 2014 WNBA season. All Dream home games at Philips Arena that are not nationally televised will be televised on FOX Sports South and/or SportSouth. Coverage also includes three road matchups: May 17 and July 12 at Indiana, and July 22 at Minnesota.

DREAM ON THE RADIOThe Dream has entered into a new promotional partnership with CBS Radio Atlanta, which marks the first major market radio partnership in Dream history. This season, SportsRadio 92-9 The Game will serve as the team’s exclusive sports radio station and V-103/1380 WAOK will be the exclusive urban radio stations for the Dream. Two Dream home games will be broadcast live on 92-9 The Game this season - the June 7 game against Chicago and an Aug. 3 contest against New York.

SUCCESS OVERSEASSancho Lyttle helped Galatasaray enjoy its best season ever during the off-season, becoming the first Turkish club to win the EuroLeague title, win-ning its first Turkish League championship in 14 years and the Turkish Cup as well. Galatasaray defeated Angel McCoughtry’s Fenerbahce squad in the finals of all three. In addition, Céline Dumerc led Tango Bourges Basket to the French League finals, and in Brazil, Sport Recife, which in-cluded Erika de Souza, Tiffany Hayes and Nadia Colhado, reached the finals before falling. Other Dream players to play overseas were Matee Ajavon (Mersin/Turkey) and Aneika Henry (Antakya/Turkey).

MICHAEL COOPERHEAD COACHCareer Regular Season Record in WNBA: 178-89Career Postseason Record in WNBA: 25-13Career Regular Season Record in Atlanta: 11-4

Former NBA player and WNBA champion coach Michael Cooper is in his first season as Head Coach of the Atlanta Dream. Cooper was a five-time NBA Champion as a player with the Los Angeles Lakers, and led the Los Angeles Sparks to two WNBA titles as the team’s head coach. Cooper is one of the most successful coaches in WNBA history, ranking second in career

winning percentage (.663) and sixth in career victories (167) entering the 2014 season. He is the last WNBA head coach to have led his team to back-to-back league titles, winning the 2001 and 2002 championships in Los Angeles. Cooper comes to the Dream after spending the past four seasons (2009-13) as the head coach of the women’s basketball team at the University of Southern California, compiling a record of 72-57 (.558). Prior to that, he had two stints as head coach of the Sparks, amassing a record of 167-85 (.663) over eight seasons (2000-04, 2007-09), including a 25-13 (.658) play-off record. He guided the Sparks to three Western Conference titles and reached the conference finals six times. After one season as an assistant coach for the Sparks, Cooper took over as head coach in 2000 and in his first season, led the team to a 28-4 record while being named the WNBA Coach of the Year. He then guided the team to WNBA Champion-ships in 2001 and 2002, and reached the WNBA Finals again in 2003 before losing to Detroit. His second stint with the Sparks included two more trips to the Western Conference Finals in 2008 and 2009. Cooper’s association with Los Angeles started when he spent his entire 12-year (1979-90) NBA career with the Lakers, helping the “Showtime” Lakers to five NBA titles (1980-82-85-87-88). Known for his defensive prowess, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive Team eight times – including five first team selections – and was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1987. Cooper finished his career ranked in the Lakers’ top 10 in games played (873), minutes played (23,635), 3-point field goals (428), steals (1,033), blocked shots (523), assists (3,666), defensive rebounds (2,028) and free throw percentage (.833). He also spent one season playing professionally in Italy in 1991 with Pallacanestro Virtus Roma. Following his playing career, Cooper served as a special assistant to Lakers general manager Jerry West for three years before joining the Lakers’ coaching staff for four seasons (1994-97). Cooper ended his first stint with the Sparks to return to the NBA in 2005 as an assistant with the Denver Nuggets, and spent part of that season serving as interim head coach. He then became the head coach of the NBA Development League’s Albuquerque Thunderbirds for two seasons (2005-07), winning the NBA D-League Championship in 2006 and posting a 50-48 (.510) regular-season record. Cooper attended Pasadena (Calif.) High and then Pasadena City College before starring at New Mexico, where he made the All-Western Athletic Conference first team as a senior in 1978. He was selected to the Lobo Hall of Honor in 1992. Cooper has also been recognized for his community efforts off the court. During the 1985-86 season, Cooper, along with New York’s Rory Sparrow, was selected by the Pro Basketball Writer’s Association as the recipient of the J. Walter Ken-nedy Citizenship Award. Cooper was also honored with the Commitment to Excellence Award during the 2007 Los Angeles Sports Fans Choice Awards.
