Some cities are strongly identifiedwith a particular style.Take, for example, New Orleans and its centuries-old love af-

fair with all things French. But Atlanta? Well, it seems that wenever met a design trend that we didnt want to embrace. Overthe years, weve literally been all over the map with our deco-rating, making stops along the way in England, France and theMediterranean.

I remember, in the 1970s, when Atlantans developed a pas-sion for American antiques. No home in Buckhead, AnsleyPark nor Druid Hills was considered properly decorated with-out a Federal sideboard, a Windsor chair or a bullseye mirror.

Some might chalk up that decades fascination with Americanato the hoopla over our countrys Bicentennial but I also givecredit to Atlantas own Deanne Levison, a noted expert on

American furniture. Her former Peachtree Road storefrontwas the destination for blue-chip collectors shopping for blue-chip antiques.

By the 1980s, though, we had ventured to the land of ourforebears and began to decorate our homes in the English style.We were mad for plaids and chintzes, not to mention dogpaintings, Staffordshire animals and antique armoires. I got soswept up in the look that I even traveled to the UK in hopes ofbringing home a British aristocrat as my next husband, but thatdidnt quite work out. Its a good thing, too, because with theadvent of the 1990s Atlanta had shed its Anglophilia andturned its focus to Francemore specifically, the CountryFrench look. Provincial furniture, toiles and walls painted thecolor of sunflowers were all the rage. Buckhead ladies (myself

included) beat a path to stores like Pierre Deux in hopes offinding that certain quelque chose for our maisons.In the last decade, we have decorated our homes to resem-

ble Tuscan villas and even Belgian castles. Whats next? I cantsay, but knowing Atlantans, well welcome it with open arms!

INSPIRATIONS KITCHEN & BATHMichael BellMichael Bell serves as vice president of Bell Custom Cabinetry and

principal manager of Inspirations Kitchen & Bath design studio.

After earning degrees in science at Texas A&M University and Baylor

College of Medicine, Bell enjoyed a successful career as a business

consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he worked with Fortune

500 companies around the country. In 2003, he returned to Atlanta to

join his fathers company, and together they have grown Bell Custom

Cabinetry into one of the premier custom cabinetry firms in Atlanta. By

combining his passion for architecture and woodworking with a strong

business background, Bell has had the privilege of not only designing

outstanding kitchens, baths, entertainment centers and pubs, but also

working with an extremely talented group of craftsmen to produce the

finest cabinetry for homes throughout Atlanta and across the South-

east. Most recently, he co-founded Inspirations Kitchen and Bath, a

unique studio concept that allows designers to work with clients on

selecting all of the elements for their kitchen and bath projects.

During his free time, Bell enjoys the best of Atlanta with his wife

Christine, daughter Emily and twin sons Carson and Chase. His hob-

bies include coaching his childrens sports, along with playing tennisand club soccer with friends.

Paul L. Castell

Paul L. Castell is an independent business consultant based in

Atlanta. He holds a B.A. in sales and marketing from Georgia State

University and is fluent in French. After a series of successful stints at

companies such as Ashford International, Inc., Georgia Pacific and

Microsoft, Castell joined his family contracting company in 1998. He

helped transform it into a thriving eight-million-dollar construction andremodeling business. Additionally, Castell started another company

called Elements, A Home Design Studio. Elements was a retail turnkey

interior home business with a 5,500 square-foot showroom. The

Castel has traveled extensively throughout the world. He has also

served on several boards and has been active in coaching several

chess and athletic teams.

Jenny Parker

Jenny is a Chattanooga native who moved to Atlanta in 2002 to

complete her internship and receive her Bachelor of Science in Interior

Design from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. During herinternship at Interior Design Atlanta, Jenny found designing kitchens

and baths were the best fit for her love of space planning and draft-

ing. She then designed remodel projects at Elemente until their com-

pany merged with CSI Kitchen and Bath Studio in 2006. She further

developed her expertise in remodeling kitchens and baths by working

in design and sales.

In 2010 Jenny joined Inspirations Kitchen and Bath and has been

working on kitchen and bath remodel projects throughout Atlanta.

She has enjoyed designing homeshow booths for the Fall and Spring

homeshows. She implemented the installation of the permanent

Phipps Plaza display for Inspirations and now manages the design

studio at Phipps Plaza. Jenny is excited to be working with Mike Bell

and Fernandez & True Interiors to create the new Luxury Living kitchen

at Phipps Plaza for 2012.

THEDESIGNERS

FERNANDEZ AND TRUE INTERIORSThe design team of John Fernandez and Jennifer True brings a unique

balance of masculine and feminine energies to their interiors. With

styles ranging from traditional European to clean contemporary, their

diverse portfolio includes projects in New York, Los Angeles, San Fran-

cisco, Jackson Hole, Houston, New Orleans, the Florida Pan Handle

and, of course, Atlanta. Their creative eye is heavily influenced by their

extensive travels throughout the U.S. and abroad.

But rarely do they usemoody and mysterious materials such as pyritestone and malachite as the jumping-of pointsor a project. Those elements, coupled with vary-ing shades o dark green, served as the muse ordesigner Michel Boyds residence, created in col-laboration with Bradley Hughes, a showroom atthe Atlanta Decorative Arts Center.

I love to layer textures, patterns and colors,says Boyd. Its essential in a luxury environ-ment. I you think youve layered enough andneed to stop, dont stop! Here, those layers in-clude salon-style art walls, stunning chandeliers,Greek key motis, a bevy o patterned and metal-lic wallpapers, even ot-overlooked organictouches. Fresh flowers are always necessary,

hen given carte blanchewith a showhouse project, there have been in-stances were the talent has employed every de-sign trickat once. The resulting space is otenan amalgamation o ideas, but without ocus. Forthis showhouse residence, however, designerSusan Ferrier chose to tackle the givens o thespaceincluding white walls, floor-to-ceilingwindows and a challenging architectural col-umnand treated them as the client, devising so-lutions around them. Eschewing the immediateimpluse to use bold paint colors to make an im-

pact, Ferrier chose to spend unds on draperiesand custom, large-scale art, which helped to defineintimate, individual spaces within a somewhatopen floorplan. ith east-, west-, and south-acing vistas, residence 1907 rames views othe downtown Atlanta skylinerom theGeorgia Pacific building to the GeorgiaDomelike a picture postcard. And, collabo-rating with The Mercantilethe Brookhavenhome urnishings emporium that provided themajority o urniture and accessoriesinte-rior designer Amy Morris put her own stampon the space using a colorul leitmoti, carriedout on everything rom rugs and accessories toabrics and bold paint colors. Upon entering,visitors are greeted by horizontal stripes

painted on the corridor walls that seem to havean invisible pull on guests, luring them urtherinto the space. Likewise, a rich, deep turquoisecolor blankets the bedroom while a cocoon-like eggplant wraps the library. WITH WIT ANDELEGANCE, THERESIDENCE OOZESSOUTHERN

HOSPITALITYFORTHE 21ST CENTURY

The residence designed byKerry Howard eatures views o several iconicAtlanta institutions, among them the Coca-Cola headquarters, CNN and the GeorgiaAquarium. So, with a nod to southern hospitality,Howard built upon the local landmarks that sur-round his space by incorporating a mural o Scar-lett OHara, meant to look like it was painted onthe side o a building.

Using urnishings rom Redefined Home Bou-tique, Howard created a residence envisioned as ahome or a young emale proessional who be-lieves less is more and likes to mix the past withmodern elements. A traditional pedestal in thecorner, or instance, holds a modern sculpture. Inthe bedroom, the shape o the bed is traditionalbut on either side are contemporary alabasterlamps. A magnolia-print bedspread in the bed-room also alludes to Southern style but there areplenty o pink accents throughout the resi-denceincluding a candy-colored glass chande-lierthat add a decidedly eminine touch. Andbecause no Southern home is complete without aplace to entertain amily and riends, an expansive
