Lord, come to my aid! (Psalm 40)
From Fr. Kevin… Long before our contemporary concern for the welfare of our planet’s resources, Jesus was concerned about “global warming” in a different way. In today’s gospel, He says, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!”This is global warming in the best sense. Jesus desires every heart to be ‘on fire’ with the Holy Spirit, excited and ignited with vibrant faith. Perhaps the word, fire, can be an acronym: F.ully I.gnited R.esponding E.ntirely. During these days of the world Olympics in Rio, perhaps we can draw an analogy from the track and swimming competitions to understand what “responding entirely” means. The best world class sprinters and swimmers are very focused and disciplined human beings when competing. Each is fully engaged in their event. During the race, they don’t look side to side to see if a competitor is catching up to them; nor do they look back to see is anyone is catching up. Rather, they look forward straight ahead, entirely focused, resolutely determined, eyes fixed on the finish line. In today’s second reading from Hebrews (Heb. 12:1-2), we are told to “persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith.” St. Paul says it this way in Phil. 3:13-14: “forgetting what lies behind but straining forward to what lies ahead, I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling in Christ Jesus.” Jesus is the goal, the prize, the “Gold Medal” of our lives of faith. We need the fire of the Holy Spirit in order to ‘go for the gold’. Peace, Fr. Kevin

FAITH FACT What’s significant about Mary’s Assumption?
As the Church celebrates the feast of the Assumption of Mary on August 15th, the question of Mary’s death was a subject of discussion and debate for centuries. Finally, in 1950, the Church declared that the “Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed both body and soul into heaven.” This feast of Mary reminds us that she was raised on high as a great sign for all who believe in her Son and that from her place in heaven, she continues to care for us today and desires that we too share in the resurrection. Let us never be afraid to seek her intercession with hope in God’s grace and love. (Note: Since the Assumption falls on a Monday, the Holy Day of obligation is rescinded in the United States and some other countries.)
