Welcome Back!

Seneca Valley Marching Band members made a surprise appearance during the first in-service

meeting for staff. It was a great way to kick-off the 2012-13 school year in style!

Who’s Who

Over the past few months, the Seneca Valley School District has been preparing to open for the 2012

-13 school year, and in doing so, has made some adjustments based on retirements and restructured

positions. Please join us in welcoming to their new roles the following individuals:

At Seneca Valley’s School Board Meeting on Aug. 6, 2012, board members ap-

proved Ms. Heather Lewis to serve as the new athletic director. Ms. Lewis, a Wex-

ford resident, has previous experience as the chief operating officer for a United

States Olympic Committee National Governing Body, supporting women’s national

team qualifications for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. As part of this role, she also

hosted three major events for the international federation of hockey. She also has

previous experience as the head field hockey coach, women’s lacrosse coach, asso-

ciate athletic director and assistant athletic director for Bucknell University in Lew-

isburg, Pa. Additional experiences include time spent as an official for the National Collegiate Ath-

letic Association (NCAA) and president of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

A former athlete herself, Ms. Lewis was a regional

All-American and All-ACC and captain of the

field hockey team, and regional All-American and

NCAA champion for women’s lacrosse, all while

at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Ms. Lewis has a bachelor’s of science in zoology

and a master’s in kinesiology from the University

of Maryland.

At Seneca Valley's School Board Meeting on

June 25, 2012, board members approved sev-

eral appointments, including:

Dr. Sean McCarty, principal of

the Seneca Valley Middle School

has been promoted by the Seneca

Valley School Board to serve as

the assistant superintendent of

elementary education, grades

K-6. Dr. McCarty replaces Dr.

Jeffrey Fuller, who left the dis-

trict to serve as Freedom Area Superintendent.

Dr. McCarty has been in the Seneca Valley

School District for 16 years, serving first as a

special education teacher and then moving to the

Seneca Valley Middle School assistant principal

position before being named principal in 2007.

Dr. McCarty, an Adams Township resident,

earned his bachelor's from Slippery Rock Univer-

sity. He earned his principal certification along

with his master's and doctorate in education from

the University of Pittsburgh.

In Dr. McCarty's place, board

members approved the promotion

of Andrea Peck from assistant

principal of the Seneca Valley

Middle School to acting principal

pending the employment of a

permanent principal.

In other hiring news, the board ap-

proved the promotion of Dr. San-

dra Krivak-Fowler as principal of

Evans City Middle School. Dr.

Fowler, a Zelienople resident, re-

places Mr. Thomas Hallman, who

retired earlier this month. Dr.

Fowler has been serving as assis-

tant principal of Evans City Elementary and Mid-

dle School for the past two years. She began her

career in the Franklin Regional School District as

a teacher. In 1996, Dr. Fowler became an elemen-

tary school principal in the Plum Borough School

District and then returned to Franklin Regional as

the principal of Sloan Elementary School. Dr.

Fowler accepted a professorship at Robert Morris

University in 2002, where she worked as an assis-

tant professor in the elementary education depart-

ment. She earned her bachelor's from the Univer-

sity of Toledo in 1990. She completed a master's

degree at Duquesne University in 1996 concur-

rently earning her elementary principal certifica-

tion. Dr. Fowler earned her doctorate in education

at Duquesne University in 2001.

Mr. Jeffrey Roberts has been

named assistant principal of Seneca

Valley Cyber, grades K-12. Mr.

Roberts previously served as an

assistant principal of the Seneca

Valley Senior High School.

In April, the members of the

board approved the hiring of

Cecil Crouch III to replace Dar-

lene Leone as special education

assistant director. Ms. Leone re-

tired at the end of June. Mr.

Crouch comes to Seneca Valley

after nine years of working as an

educational consultant for the Pennsylvania

Training & Technical Assistant Network

(PaTTAN) in Harrisburg. During his time at PaT-

TAN, Mr. Crouch trained intermediate units and

school districts all over the Commonwealth on

the implementation of Response to Intervention

(RtII), progress monitoring and special education

laws. He’s also responsible for developing many

of the special education forms used in Pennsyl-

vania schools, including the Individualized Edu-

cation Plan (IEP) form. Mr. Crouch also has pre-

vious experience as a special education teacher in

the Big Beaver Falls and Butler Area school dis-

tricts as well as a regular education teacher in the

Karns City School District. In addition to a

bachelor’s of science degree in special and ele-

mentary education, Mr. Crouch has a master’s in

special education supervision from Slippery Rock

University. He also holds certification in school

leadership, teaching trainer, mediation and super-

vision.

Transportation Notes

A recent transportation policy change allows a student to be reassigned to a different loading zone

and/or route on a regular schedule or on a temporary basis due to special circumstances. The request

must be filed on the appropriate form available from the Transportation office. Each written request

will be evaluated on an individual basis by the transportation director. Requests for changes in trans-

portation assignments must be made in advance and will not be granted on the date of the request.

Requests submitted to persons other than the transportation director will not be honored. The district

will not add additional buses or loading zones (bus stops) or alter established routes to accommodate

an individual transportation request. Any change is dependent upon the availability of space on the

alternative bus. For more information, read the transportation policy.

Sprigeo News

Seneca Valley is preparing to offer Sprigeo for the Seneca Valley School District Community. Sprigeo

(www.sprigeo.com) is a safe, online reporting format that can be utilized to send anonymous reports

of bullying, harassment and/or intimidation that occur at school. The program will be introduced to

students and parents, grades 5-12, at the beginning of the school year. Form links will be provided via

our 5-12 building websites, and additional information/training will be provided to staff upon their

return next month.

and dance composition for the 2012-13 school year. To learn more, visit the program of studies at:

SV Band’s “Driving For Dollar$”

SV “Driving for Dollar$” program is a referral program in which the SV Marching Band members,

their families and the SV Band Boosters help to direct potential automotive purchasers to a group of

preferred automotive dealers who are a part of the program. As a result of driving business to the

automotive dealers in the program, the dealers provide a “referral fee” to the Seneca Valley Band

Boosters to help support the future success of the Seneca Valley Bands.
