GASSAN KHUNTAN GOLF AND RESORT, Chiang Mai, Thailand

After a long decline, Gassan Khuntan is back to top form. Jim, our Chiang Mai expertwas there last month and reported that the course is in really excellent condition. Majorrenovations were completed over the past 2 years. Things are so good now that GassanKhuntan may even be the best conditioned course in all Chiang Mai with lush, green, andwell-maintained landscaping throughout. The Chiang Mai course has to be one of themost scenic courses in Thailand and also one of the most difficult. My tip for golfersheaded to Chiang Mai – include a round at Gassan, take your camera, and forget aboutyour score.

The Alpine Golf Club course follows through the valleys and mountains that surround thecourse. There are streams, ponds and bunkers all in strategic positions to add to thegolfer's visual delight. Special mention must be made of the Par 3 15th hole, an islandgreen that, at only 129 yards from the white tees, seems to turn seasoned golfers intobeginners and reaching for their old golf balls.

Playing golf in Thailand is not just about the game it is an exotic experience that has leftme with the most wonderful memories from the Land of Smiles. Now I don't always playwell and I have been known to miss the odd easy putt but nothing can stop theenjoyment I get playing on some of the best golf courses in Asia.

I first heard about golf in Thailand and Golfasian whilst playing with a group inSingapore. It sounded exciting and the more I investigated the practicalities of putting atour together the more enthusiastic I became. Then it all came together in March 2012. Ihad contacted Golfasian and received a quick response from Bee. I was amazed at the

The Pearl of the Andaman is an hour's flight south of Bangkok and is without questionwhat people imagine to be typical of the beauty that Thailand has to offer. Beautifulbeaches and mountainous scenery has attracted holiday makers to Phuket for manyyears, and although the high season is a little shorter than other destinations in Thailanddue to the monsoon rains in July, August and September it still has much to offer forgolfers the rest of the year. Since our last review of Phuket in 2014, much has happenedin a positive way on the golf scene for golfers to enjoy. Laguna Golf Club has completedits renovation and is fully open and in great condition and will host the Singha PhuketOpen at the end of October this year. Blue Canyon has new owners and they havealready made positive improvements on the championship course. Loch Palm is still aspopular as ever and the spectacular Red Mountain is rated by many in the top six coursesin the country.

An hour north of Phuket International Airport is the province of Phang Nga which recentlyopened a very good course called Katathong which was originally an old tin mine. Withtwo new projects about to open in Khao Lak, golfers will soon have an exciting new areato discover.

The airport expansion was completed in March, so along with improved road conditionswe feel Phuket as a golf destination is all positive and very much open for business!

Laguna Golf Phuket features a resort golfcourse with pleasant breezes from theAndaman Sea. The Phuket golf course isnot too demanding and reflects the naturalbeauty and tropical surroundings of BangTao Bay. Phuket Golf Laguna is set on avalley floor overlooked by low wooded hillsand marsh lands.

The Phuket golf course was re-designed in2014 and now the Laguna Golf Phuket isboth more challenging and memorable.Golfers need to think their way around thegolf course as each hole offers a multitudeof shot options and both nines have goodvariety.

Undoubtedly Thailand golf is gaining inprofile and quality thanks to a growinggolf tourism market and increasedtelevision exposure of tournaments such asthe Thailand Classic (Black Mountain) andThailand Championship (Amata Spring). These 2 courses compare with some of thebest in the world but understandably withthat comes a price premium. I cansee that someone arriving to play inThailand probably will be looking forsomething special but perhaps they mightwish to look further for an experiencethat is equally rewarding in differentways, but at a relatively bargain price.

It's the middle of the hot and rainy seasonhere in Thailand. As we've explained beforeyour golf won't be a washout but you mayhave to take shelter for 20 minutes as astorm passes. Be prepared for the humidityand rain. Bring a waterproof golf bag coverand brolly (preferably with a reflectivesurface to keep the sun off you when it isn'training). Bring a couple of spare gloves, andbring a towel.

All of these things can be purchased atdecent prices on arrival so don't sweat it…
