Word From the Pastor
Some of you may recall the strong winds we experienced on Long Island on the eve of
All Saints Day in October 2019. As Fr. Alex was leaving the rectory to go to Church to prepare for the 5:15 PM vigil Mass, he saw the crucifix at the shrine outside the rectory
swaying back and forth. Somehow Fr. Alex managed to keep the cross from crashing to the ground and damaging the corpus of Jesus. Water damage to the foundation of the
wood cross over the years was the cause of the problem. The cross was scheduled to be replaced and then Covid 19 arrived and just about everything came to a halt. Several
weeks ago, Michael Francis Reali, the grand Knight of the Joseph Mario Council, of-fered the assistance of the Knights to have a new crucifix erected at the shrine. The
new crucifix was installed on Friday, August 24, 2020. Please join me in thanking the Knights from our parish for their generous donation to refurbish the Cross. Many of
you have visited the shrine over the years for a little quiet time and private prayer. It’s interesting to see how many people do come quietly throughout the week to spend
some time in prayer. Hopefully, you’ll find some time to stop by the shrine and say a prayer.
Thank you to those parishioners who are responding to the 2020 Catholic Ministries
Appeal. As I announced last weekend, we’re getting closer to the parish goal of $27,100. We had a slight increase from last week and the new total for gifts and/or pledges is
$20, 475. If you’re considering a gift, please remember that no gift is too small, and every gift makes a difference. As I always remind you, when you help to support the
various ministries of the Diocese, you also help HNJ because when the parish goal is reached, the parish receives a 20% rebate.
Over the years, the parish has had an annual Spring raffle to help raise some addition-
al funds for the parish. The annual Spring raffle was not held this past June since we were unable to have Masses and other activities including the parish picnic in July. Af-
ter consulting the FUNdraising Committee, I’m happy to inform you that we decided on a Fall raffle this year. It will be a 50/50 raffle; the first prize will be 25%, the second
prize will be 15% and third prize will be 10%. The remaining 50% will go to the Church to help defray some of our expenses and the shortfall we have experienced at the
Church. Tickets will be mailed to all parishioners on the parish mailing list.
Eucharistic Day Retreats are offered at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington by the Missionaries of the Most Holy Eucharist. For more information, see
the announcement elsewhere in this bulletin.
There is a severe shortage of blood supply due to the pandemic throughout the New York area and the country. We urge you to donate by visiting the local Blood Center in
Melville located at: 905 Walt Whitman Road (Route 110) Melville, NY 11747 (this is just north of the Northern State Parkway). You must schedule an appointment to donate blood. For more information or to schedule an appointment, Call 1-800-

FOCUS: The demands that Jesus places on his
disciples are rigorous and cannot be met by taking
half measures or making excuses. For the times we
have backed away from the demands of following
Jesus, we ask forgiveness from God and from this
Christian community. In the first reading, a prophet struggles with the responsibility of speaking God’s word to people who do not want to hear it. In the second
reading, we are reminded of what it means for us to belong to the Body of Christ. In the Gospel, following a heated argument among the disciples about the meaning of being the Messiah, Jesus teaches them what being one of his followers really means. Published by Franciscan Media

We are currently trying to determine how best to run our Religious Ed. Program to best en-sure the health and safety of everybody in-volved. Registration will begin soon for this
upcoming school year, so any one interested in registering their children in Religious Ed. for
the 2020-21 school year should contact the rectory office as soon as possible if we have not reached out to you already. We welcome parents’ input in helping us make these deci-
sions.
Learning from Saint Teresa of Calcutta
Next month, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. She was such an influential woman who touched the lives of so many people… and continues to do so even now! She reminds
us that we are all called to be the Hands of Christ’s Mercy in our communities today. We need not be in the streets of Calcutta to do good for our brothers and sisters in Christ. We can
help our community here on Long Island through the 2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Your gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal will help more than 600,000 of our sisters and brothers receive support and assistance from the funds shared through the CMA each year. It is rare that
just one person or one parish could touch this many life. The CMA brings us beyond the individual, the group and the parish and unites us as one Church of Long Island.
Saint Teresa of Calcutta pray for us!
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is Stewardship in Action!
To make a donation, you can also visit https://www.drvc.org/CMA
or call us at 516-678-5800 ext. 296.
Thank You!
